I am fully aware that there are many scammers out there. The thing is, when I give I'm actually being selfish. I give because I can't stand the thought that the Rp10K or $1 or whatever trivial amount that I withhold could actually make somebody's life miserable for the next half day.
Most homeless people in USA are out on the street not because they're truly hungry, it's usually due to mental illness, alcoholism, or drug abuse. Still once in a while I would see one that just doesn't seem to fit the mold, and I would be compelled to give. One day I was in a hurry when I saw one of these, so I didn't stop. The guilt nagged me until the next day; I would gladly part way with $1 to get rid of that feeling.
