  • Questions before considering to move in Indonesia

Hello, I'm working on Internet and free to move anywhere, so why not Indonesia ? It seem better than place like Vietnam with strange human right, or than place with polyphonic thongs or ideogram writing.

But before learning Indonesian and planning to travel, I'd like some information :

    Internet
What's the cost of Fiber optic, 5G, 4G LTE, or good ADLS? How it's working now? Is it only in big cities?
I read their is censorship, but against what?
Is working on internet a reason to be allowed to live in Indonesia?

    Money
What's the cost for a small quiet clean home fore one person with air conditioning (in a place with internet)?
If II order parcels in China, how is it going with customs?
What's the cost of life fore someone mainly just living at home?

    Marriage
Even if it's unlikely, I'm curious : I read "According to Indonesian law, both parties must be on the same religion", but Is it valid outside the 6 religions recognized by the government? What about Orthodox with Orthodox, Jewish with Jewish, etc, or even "fantasy" worship like Church of Kopimism, Pastafary, Star Wars Jedi believers?

    Language
Is Indonesian enough, or is it better to learn a second local language?

    Ecology
In France, the situation is often bad: landfills of dangerous products, pollution caused by agriculture... also, I wonder how things are going in Indonesia?
Are there preserved places ... but with a good internet connection ?

    Safety
Does someone with unbranded clothes, a $1 Aliexpress watch and a $150 refurbished smartphone have a chance of getting robbed?

    What about French people ?
With French government wanting to include Muhammad's caricature in scholar books, Muslims don't like French people right now, so how it's going in Indonesia?

    (1) I am almost sure it is cheaper than in France , but no 5G yet . I guess big part of the country is already covered by 4G and ADSL .

    (2) Sex , gambling , ...

    (3) Some Indonesian government officers may consider it illegal (the Law states that foreigners can only work when legally hired by Indonesian based companies) .

    (4) I am almost sure that it is cheaper than in France . And it is more expensive in Jakarta than in other cities .

    (5) No problem if you order from online shopping platforms based in Indonesia .

    (6) For sure cheaper than in France .

    (7) I never heard about marriage (in Indonesia) for other than the officially recognazed religions . I would guess it is not possible because churches need permit to operate and a church of a specific religion cannot operate in an area populated by people of a diferent religion .

    (8) A little bit of Indonesian is enough (I stated living here knowing only few words of Indonesian language) .

    (9) I am not sure if I understood your main concern . Regarding pollution in general , I think Indonesia cares less than France . The country is big , so there are many places not polluted yet , but probably with no internet .

    (10) Very small chance , in my view . One of the reasons of why I live in Indonesia is because I feel safe here .

    (11) Most Indonesians are not violent people , but anyway it would be better if you don't tell people that your are French except when really necessary .

        (c) Prices seems very different for unlimited fiber internet:

        (a) Well YouTube and Twitter are very common everywhere . Disney+ started being available recently in Indonesia . Reddit seems to be blocked in Indonesia .

        https://www.thejakartapost.com/life/...indonesia.html , Sept 2020 , title : Disney+ Hotstar now available in Indonesia

www.quora.com ? Why-is-Reddit-blocked-by-the-Indone.. : Why is Reddit banned in Indonesia ? According to our Ministry of Communication and Information ( Mengkominfo ). Reddit was banned because it promoted pornographic materials and not only Reddit was banned, Imgur and Vimeo were also banned.

        (b) Yes . But t-shirts specifically , most are not comming from China , as far as I saw (I bought some at US$2 but made in Indonesia) .

        (c) According to https://www.biznethome.net/service/biznet-home-internet , packages start from Rp325'000 per month .

Buying pre-paid internet credit is confusing and you need to be sure you will have signal available at your address from a specific operator before you buy . And when buying you need to be carefull in checking the conditions , for example , from Tri (maybe the cheapest operator) : AddOn 32GB , Rp75'000 : 2GB 3G/4G anytime + 15GB (500MB/day) + 15GB (between 1AM-5PM), active for 30 days . For Telkomsel (which covers more areas and is maybe the most expensive) there is an additional complication : prices depend on the area (some 10 areas in Indonesia) so if you buy credit from a different area it will not work in your area .
I think it is a little easier for you to buy directly from the operators , through their apps or through online shopping platforms (see this link as example :  https://shopee.co.id/produk-digital/...from_source=36 .

So what happens if someone gets caught surfing on r/formula1/ with a VPN?

Indeed. Thanks for this very useful information! In France, the network is almost 99.9% the same everywhere with the different operators.

            (y) ... In France, the network is almost 99.9% the same everywhere with the different operators.

            (x) I didn't read the related Law/Regulation yet , but once I heard about one Legislator caught watching sex video and I think nothing happened to him . In another case an artist was jailed because he or his partner recorded a video of them making sex and the video ended up in the social media (or something like that - I didn't read the details) .
I guess it is illegal to distribute/disseminate/transport , but not to watch privately .

            (y) Here it is different . I live near the center of a big city but I can get full Tri signal only outside at the top of my house (inside it is only 2/4 bars' signal) . So I got 2 types (micro USB-to-USB & 3.5mm speaker/microphone) of 3m extension cable to use internet inside the house but putting the cellphone at the top of the house (both for calling or conecting it to my computer) .
