  • Word differences - Betul , benar

    In English, there are synonyms. Word spelled different, but with similar or the same meaning. Is this the case for these two words?

    Or are their subtle differences, where one or the other is more appropriate in certain circumstances?

    Also, I'm curious about mengerjakan=melakukan. Do they both the same verb "doing" ?

      I'll have a stab at this one...
      Mengerjakan: doing something more focussed, such as a task/ work.

      Melakukan : doing more general activities.

                I did a little more digging...

                It seems that betul is not proper bahasa Indonesia. It is more of a dialect usage for Betawanese.

                Benar is correct usage.

                Any comments?

                  Much appreciated for the stab. Norman Bates approves.

                  Would you mind giving an example of each, so I can better place them in proper grammar?

                    Saya lagi mengerjakan antenna (TV) - I put up a TV antena ( literal translation doesn't work so well)
                    Saya melakukan belanja - I do the shopping

                      Benar = true
                      Betul = correct, right
                      Kebenaran = truth
                      Kebetulan = coincidence (something that happens just at the right time)
                      Pembenaran = justification
                      Pembetulan = correction

                      Kerja = work
                      Pekerja = worker
                      Mengerjakan = to work on / working on
                      Laku = do
                      Pelaku = perpetrator
                      Melakukan = to commit / committing

                        I guess that's why you'll find ‘betul’ in the KBBI then, right?

                          I was under the impression that "melakukan" related to "behaviour". Any advice on this?

                            Perlakuan is behavior, while memperlakukan is to treat. The meaning shifts slightly when different affixes are applied to the root word (laku). The root word acts as the theme that unifies the different meanings.

                              Oh, yes sir. But it still doesn't take away the possibility of it not being original Indonesian. A thousand pardons for reporting what I was told without confirming with you.
