  • Rat or mouse.?

    How does one distinguish a RAT from a MOUSE in the Indonesian language.?

    Both translate as TIKUS.

    Same problem differentiating an APE from a MONKEY. Both translate as MONYET.

    After having a few confusing conversations, I'm still not 100% sure but here's my best guess.

    Tikus refers to both mice and rats.
    Rat = Tikus Besar, and definitely refers to rats.
    Mouse = possibly Tikus Kecil, but I'm not sure most Indonesians are aware that mice aren't baby rats.

    Is it possible that mice simply aren't a common problem here? Now that I think of it, we had all sorts of pests at our old house but never any mice. Plenty of rats though.

    I've often wondered if they think Mickey Mouse is a rat.

      I think you are right, Rat is Tikus and mouse Tikus Kecil, like you never see a mouse, We had a mouse thing in KL, bit bigger than a mouse but not as big as a rat, had very large ears, sadly deceased now

        We certainly had what appeared to be a mouse a couple of years ago in our kitchen.

        My wife called the mouse Tikus Rumah. She certainly knows the difference in species.

          Googling Wikis I came up with:

          Rat = Tikus (ie Tikus Got, Tikus Sawah, Tikus Rumah)
          Mouse = Mencit

          Ape = Kera (ie Orang Utan)

          Monkey = Monyet

                When my niece was a little girl she used to ask me to look into a mirror and yell 'monyet, monyet'...she was amused and I joined in the fun.
                Now she is all grown up with her own children.
                I'm afraid she might recall and tell her kids because when I look in the mirror I can see what she meant....and I'm no longer amused...

                  A rat is tikus got (sewer mouse) while a small mouse is tikus, sometimes mencit.

                    AFAIK, Tikus covers almost all types of rat/mouse except white mouse (tikus putih) and mole (tikus tanah). If you want to differentiate grey mouse (which is smaller than a rat but otherwise similar) just use tikus kecil.

                    I dunno how differentiate monkeys and apes tho.. both are called monyet
