  • NPWP and filing

    Hi.

My wife and I have (in her account) about 2 billion IDR with BCA that we transferred from my retirement overseas about a year ago. We're planning to put some if this into a deposito as well as a reksadana. She's had this account for a while so we were never concerned with the NPWP. Now, however, she would like to obtain an NPWP so that we can open some other accounts as well.

We have a concern regarding obtaining the NPWP for her. Obviously after obtaining it we would need to file yearly. Will we run into any problems with the money that we have in her account? I understand that it needs to be reported under her assets. I have all the statements for the above-mentioned funds, but I just want to know if we should anticipate any issues from the tax authority.

Things that may be of importance:

    - I do not have residency as we don't reside here permanently
    - We are married in Indonesia
    - She would file separately

    (1) Yes , unless you two don't care paying a small fine every year (maybe around USD12 per year) , or unless she requests (to Kantor Pajak) to make the NPWP inactive after the first/second/ .. Tax Return Report .

    (2) I think there will be no problem as far as the money is legal . I mean "no problem" except that Indonesian income tax may be applicable .

    (3) Yes . I think there are many ways how she can declare that money , for example :
    - money borrowed from you (so no tax to pay) , or
    - money received as a gift from you (I guess no tax to pay too) , or
    - money she earned (a lot of tax to pay)

I guess that in the 2 ways above , you may have (I am not sure) to get a NPWP too (which may require you to get an Indonesian residence Visa/KITAS) .

You can probably (I did some 18 years ago) ask tax questions anonymously in as many Indonesian Kantor Pajak as you want . In my case they answered me in a very effective way .

And , sorry to say that letting your wife control such amount of money is not recommended by many (me included) , unless this money is only a small percentage of what you control yourself . This because we always should assume we may end divorcing and fighting for the assets .
