Having grown up a stone's throw from some of the nicer beaches in the world yet having spent the past couple of years living in one of the viler concrete jungles around me and the missus will be heading back to Indonesia at the end of the year and are keen to hang out on some decent beaches.
Money isn't a huge issue. But that haven't being said we aren't willing to pay Pulau Pangkil (http://www.pangkil.com/) prices. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

Lombok's southern coast are the closest good beaches to Jakarta. Maluku has plenty, but to get there takes time and patience.

I like Amed in Bali though I concede the beach itself isn't that fantastic. More like pockets of beach strung out along the coast. Was thoroughly disappointed with the beach at Pangandaran - never seen so much plastic waste on an alleged 'obyek wisata' before.

try Baron's beach, yogyakarta. it is one of the series of beaches located on the southeastern area of Yogyakarta. Other beaches nearby are Krakal and Krukup beach.
it is not as popular as Parangtritis, but many people prefer going there. the environment is cleaner than other beaches in yogya. and it is quite secluded.

the beach is between two hills where you can relax to see the beautiful panorama during sunset and sunrise. great place to take picture too. and my fave, the seafood market!!! mmmhh.. so yummy..

thanks for all the suggestions.

i often found those beaches people rave about in indonesia kuta in bali, pangandaran in java, singkawang (forget the exact name) in west kalimantan to be trash riddled brown watered crap holes. guess however it can depend on time of year you're there...trade winds etc.

personally i found some of the beaches on islands off the north coast of flores to be some of the nicest, albeit hotel free. agree about southern lombok although i didn't explore that much, kuta was really beautiful and near deserted.

the gili islands were beautiful, but based on having visited a handful of times over a 6 or 7 year period and witnessing how much they were becoming progressively more and more messed up with "i'm not a tourist, i'm a traveler" wank brained tourists and scuzzball locals i can only imagine what a mess they are these days.

very curious about specific places in maluku, hombre as i would be roughly in the area checking in with the wife's family and it would only be a short flight to get there.

The Kei archipelago in Maluku is widely acknowledged to have "Maldives-like" beaches, among the very best in Indonesia. You're right. The beaches off Riung in Flores are spectacular. The one island that really impressed me with one gorgeous beach after another was Sumba. It is also among Indonesia's cultural highlights.

This place in Sumba is called Tarimbang:

Timor-Leste also has gorgeous beaches. This is where I used to go on my lunch break, about 20 minutes from the office in Dili:

For the best beach ? Nope, quite, quite wrong. And those pictures are not Pramuka Island either, they look like Semak Duan (spelling) to be. One can stay on Pramuka and get a boat to those islands.) IF you are going to spam other peoples threads, at least get your information correct.

To the person asking., these islands are in the thousand islands just north of Jakarta, 1.5 hours by boat

yes, that first attachment is Pulau Penduduk.

anyway, nice beaches within reasonable driving distance:
1.Bayah
2.Sawarna (here you can surf, locals said the surf is better than Plb Ratu)
3.Pantai Mutun/Pulau Tangkil/Teluk Kiluan in Lampung
and anywhere in west coast sumatra the beaches are great

Krakal and Krukup and the other white sand beaches south of Jogja are too dangerous for swimming....but yes they are very pretty for a visit. ;)

Stunning beaches are found in Maluku .... such as TUAL, SANTAI BEACH, NATSEPA BEACH .... but the best area of all is RAJA AMPAT near PAPUA :o) not really a beach area, but the waters are crystal clear and excellent for diving :p

Beaches of Bira, in the district of Bulukumba in South Sulawesi, are just a-ma-zing!!! Small place, small and welcoming facilities for tourist, quiet, sure to get a colorful snorkeling and diving.

As far as I know, there is (by far) no beaches as beautiful here as in Maldives (white & very fine sand which make sea color amazing, no dead coral or stones or algas or any pollution on the beach, coral reef lagoons near by, crystal clear water with no pollution) Tahiti, Hawai or Koh phi phi (as far as it was last time I went before tsunami...) and so far the best beach I found is probably Tanjung Aan in southern of Lombok, there is another one quiet nice not so far away. The main problem is that even there are many nice beaches (but not amazing) in this vast archipelago, there are often a lack of infrastructures and connection problem to access them and enjoy them easily. In some cases for instance like Papua (and many other places), there are some places with potential but there are just a few "so called" resorts for tourist with no correlation (or correlation of minus one) between quality & confort and price.

A place I found specialy beautiful in Indonesia is Komodo national park, you can stay one night at Bintang Flores hotel and then rent a boat with a captain and a "cook" (not Paul Bocuse by far !!!) and stop on many small islands which are mostly very pretty.

Someone mentionned Bira and I went there a couple of years ago, beaches are not bad at all (nice fine white sand if I remember) but the rest (hotels, restaurants) is just very very crappy and would never lose my time there. Infractructures are by far not comparable to Koh Samui in Thailand 25 years ago and there is absolutely no fun or even charm in this place !

good luck

Captain

can we have travelers community ?

Actually you can create easily a travelers community with tripadvisor. You just have to register there and tell which places you visited already and invite people of this forum to join your traveler network on tripadvisor.
Could be interesting.

Well Captain
If what people are looking for is just white sandy beach and ignore the rest than definitely not in Indonesia.
You want be able to find a sandy beaches in Indonesia as white (or as golden) that you will find in Maldives, Copa Cabana in Brazil, Ibiza, Costa del Sol or Canary Islands in Spain.

This is due to the fact that many parts of Indonesia is in “the ring of fire” surrounded by Volcanoes which tend to have a black sandy beaches.

Yes that is true that the infrastructure in Bira in South Sulawesi is not that good. But some people might like to see a virgin beach where there are not a lot of tourists. They keep trying to avoid the beaches with a lot of people looking for partying all night, booze, one night stand, etc.

Well captain we are waiting for your ship for cruise to comodo island, and remote part of Indonesia ..

Hombre de Maiz
20-02-11, 08:14
Many parts of Indonesia are on the Ring of Fire, but many are not. Sumba, for example, is all raised ocean limestone. Here's a pic of a place called Tarimbang on the southern cost. Of course, no public transport or facilities of any sort, except a fisherman's shack, and fresh fish grilled for you on the spot, but this is really off the beaten path. Great spot for pitching the tent and putting your feet up on the hammock...

Nothing but fine limestone here...
