So many favorites ... but the single best thing is sambal tempe goreng. I'm not sure if I have the name right, but you know what I mean ... it is the crunchy mixture of thin strips of tempe and dried chili that people use as an accompaniment/rice topping. Based on the taste and texture, I think they must marinate the ingredients in kecap manis, then fry it.
(BTW if anyone knows a better name for the stuff, please let me know. It can be surprisingly hard to find, and if I knew the right name I could ask for it.)
yummmm .. agreed .. Sambal goreng tempeh - http://asiancook.eu/indonesian/hidangan/353-sambal-goreng-tempe-spicy-fried-slices-tempe

Oh THANK YOU for that recipe. I can't wait to try it. (I'm also gratified to see that my guess on how it's made was not too far off.)
Puspa, the more famous name for it, is 'kering tempe'.
Geez, where do I start?
Sate ayam, soto ayam, any gorengan, rendang, sate kambing, kwetiau
The only think I am not real fussed about is pecel lele...not enough meat on it.
- Papeda, Bagea kenari --> from Maluku
- Bacang
- Buntil Daun Papaya
- Nasi Jamblang --> from Cirebon
- Dodol Duren --> from Kalimantan
Those are my favorite :)
Rendang - though it has to be good rendang. I also like kering tempe and bebek betutu. I'm a fan of the spicy.
The things I dislike are sayur asem, ikan lele and gado-gado. Siomay are a bit biasa aje.
Rendang ala wifey, best Ive tasted, chicken Satay
pecel lele...not enough meat on it.
Agreed. However, lele sold as pecel are 7-8 per kg (ie about 130gm), so these are small, and don't have much meat on their tiny bones. A week ago we emptied one of our ponds and pulled out 4 x 2kg+ catfish (lele) which were converted to rather tasty (and meaty) pepes. We have 5 more ponds with catfish (maybe 8 or 9 per pond, some of the fish will be over 3kg), so if you're down these parts ... (first one free <g>). This doesn't apply to ALL Expatfor members!!!
I like all Indonesian food with two exceptions: salted duck eggs and mie ayam.
My personal favourite is kampung food, especially sayur daun singkong and tempe goreng.
I am starving. And all I can think about at the moment is nasi padang... doesn't help my cause considering I'm all the way in the UK right now. D'oh!
:hungry:
Go to 'Bali Bali' Restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue between Covent Garden & Tottenham Court Road. That's the only authentic Indonesian restaurant left. Foods are quite good. We used to have 'Minang' Restaurant on Greek Street, Soho before it closed down several years ago. Shame... they did nasi Padang, rendang, etc. I'm sure you've been to any of these places, no?
The rest of the 'Indonesian' restaurants aren't really Indonesian but more of Malaysian/ Singaporean origin. The only thing Indonesian in those places is the name of dishes e.g. satay or nasi goreng. My own home cooking tastes better though hahaha. Wing Yip oriental supermarket on Cricklewood broadway got many of the ingredients you would need for cooking Indonesian dishes (I'm pretty sure you know that as well)
Well, I shall think of you when I enjoy some nasi padang here in South Jakarta ;)
Oh and my favourite Indonesian food is rujak ! flaming hot one ;)

I liked the fish, but the whole fish with head and tail included kinda freaked me out. Guess i have lead a sheltered life of fillets of good fish.
I really like salmon with a tomato and herb topping followed by strawberries and cream...

Oh yeah...rujak. Love that stuff.
Had martabak manis last night too. Choc, cheese and nuts... :-)
hmmmm martabak manis isn't my thing... prefer the savoury ones + lots of chilli acar. Choc and nuts sounds more like crepes to me :)
Maybe it's because I am under 40 still, as pointed out by cc a couple of weeks ago. Apparently under 40's like choc filled things.

Plecing kangkung from Lombok, Lontong Sayur Padang or Lontong Sayur Medan, Mie Aceh, Asinan & Manisan, Pempek Palembang, Ikan Asam padeh Padang, Coto Makassar (without liver and other innards.. yuck!!), Manado Poridge (specially my mom's), Erwe, Sate Padang, Rujak, and other spicy, hot, sour, and salty foods.
Time for (late) lunch for me now ....thanks Dudulipretz! you kind of stimulate my appetite.
I really don't like the combination of chocolate and cheese. Yuk.

You know, I was grossed out at the thought of choc and cheese together. A friend got me some roti bakar and I have never looked back! Quite a good combo.
Yet my Indonesian friends balk at the thought of chilli flavoured chocolate which I love.

I'm kinda regretting having started this thread.
When I went home last year, I made a 'must eat' list (I know, I know.. >_<) and crossed them all out within three weeks of being there and ate WAY more than I should've.
- sate padang A Jo WRS (the sate padang stand outside my junior high..)
- sate kacang
- mie kangkung balacan
- kwe tiau goreng
- nasi padang
- lontong sayur
- rujak
- yum cha
- lotsa fish, crab, prawn
- tok tok
- 'chau lo'
- ling pua (assortment of goodies on a gigantic plate)
- hu chi (shark fin soup)
- ayam goreng kalasan
- kangkung balacan
- 'tok tok'
- nasi uduk
- mie baso
- Indonesian KFC!
- tahu isi
- tempe goreng
- martabak telur
- martabak manis
- lemper
- pisang goreng
- kue sus
- durian, duku, manggis
I long for Soto Kambing Betawi with all the 'special' extras like brain, lung, marrow, and stuff. Yum! I like Pecel Lele, and since the damned thing is so small I usually order 2-3 at a time.
Yet my Indonesian friends balk at the thought of chilli flavoured chocolate which I love.
They balk at the thought 'cos they haven't actually tried it ? Have you ever tried melting it ?... have it like a hot choc with cream & a hint of nutmeg... hmmmm heaven! I brought some from England but only a few bars left now - crisis.

Chocolate Chili Bites (close your eyes, Waarm, this is going to be painful..)
Ingredients:
200 g butter
200 g good-quality dark chocolate (or whatever you like, will work)
250g sugar
5 eggs
1 heaping tablespoon of flour
1-1/2 tsp ground chili (I use cayenne, but anything could work, really, just adjust it to your taste)
How to:
Pre-heat your oven to 200°C.
Melt the butter with the chocolate in a small saucepan or in a bowl in the microwave.
Transfer into a mixing bowl, add in the sugar, mix with a wooden spoon and let cool a little.
Add the eggs one by one, mixing well with the spoon after each addition.
Add the flour and the chili and mix well.
Pour the dough in the petite four molds, and put into the oven to bake for ten to twelve minutes.
The top should look set, but the inside should still be on the soft side.
Let the the mini bites cool down enough to un-mold them, then turn them out on a rack to cool completely while you cook the other batches.
Store in a plastic container, refrigerate, and take out about an hour prior to serving the next day.

Unfortunately I'm a lot more comfortable cooking Western food (French/Italian) and Chinese food as opposed to Indonesian. This is partially down to my mom's fault for always ushering me out of her Area 51 (read: kitchen). Besides, it's so cheap to eat out in Indonesia that I never even bothered to learn how to cook Indonesian food. I should really try though. It's rather easy to get spices we get in Indonesia in London.

Thank you for that link! I shall be trying my mitts on Indonesian cooking one of these days.
Goat .. err .. lamb satay with sweet soy sauce plus green chili and shallots.
MMMMMMM, yes yes, this is seriously good. I've had some of these here and also when I was in the states, but it's always that much better at home when you can see the skewers lined down the coal grill. The 'abang' fanning the skewers and the smokey flavour.. heavenly.
I also love sate padang. I don't know how they make the sauce but they must've put crack in it cause I just could never get enough!!

i took away two memories of indonesia from my first visits here in the 80s. the smell of kretek and the blandness of the food
after living in thailand for the best part of a decade im always left feeling underwhelmed by the food here.
an ideal day, foodwise, would be breakfast with a couple of roti canai and dip. lunch would be something like yam neua, a spicey thai beef salad, or laab gai, and dinner would be a chicken vindaloo with kashmir pulao and naan.
but i'm afraid indonesian food would rare;y feature
Ups! You mean the chocolate bars ya? LOL. Sorry. My mistake. Time to sleep i think.. ^^

Mas Rob, sambal hijau is not hot. Is it hot for you ?
Ok, my fav Indonesian food would be :
Gurame bakar madu, kepiting asam manis, sate ponorogo, and sup buntut made by me. Yummm..
Oh, and iga penyet with sambal pencit.
Rob, please don't be offended, but that looks like something you do the day after a red hot curry.

Minahasan (Northern Sulawesi) food is delicious and near unknown outside the province.
Has a rep for being as spicy as hell but there are only a few dishes like that.
Largely pork based so it may never take off in the rest of the archipelago, but Time magazine recently called it "The New Thai" which is a huge ovation.
http://www.time.com/time/travel/article/0,31542,2020969,00.html
We always seemed to conveniently show up at the parents-in-laws house around lunchtime.
There are some pig-free Manadonese restaurants down south (Jakarta, Medan etc) if anyone is interested.
Failing that, Padang, Sate Kambing, Gado2, MieGor, Gulai, Opor and the other usual suspects are great.
I rather enjoyed my ayam bakar in Wonosobo a couple of days ago.
Just found an excellent bebak bakar here as well.
Sate Kambing at Bekasi, near Aqua plant and Harapan Indah, nice crunchy meat with delicious Ketchup recipe, you just got to try this.
ayam mentega in warung malang, bali , a bit like chainsaw chicken but god its good... and perfect placement is the terang bulan stall next door... cheese and chocolate... awesome
ya, sate padang very yummie
oxtail soup at Borobudur Hotel, Sego Ireng -with Wedang Oewoh Imogiri from Kopitiam Oey and Ayam Sampah ( after years, thx to my friend to bring it from Aceh Rayeuk yesterday. I do enjoy it a lot)

The "sah-tay" and "ke-too-paht" you described sounds more like a Malaysian version of sate here in Indonesia... We use lontong instead. Although similar, but definitely different.

Martabak Manis Bangka (Ronny's Martabak stand in Pondok Kopi imo is the best in all of Jakarta, but that's just my opinion.)
Saksang
Es Goyang
Gurame Bakar
Ayam Goreng Ibu Suharti (I think that's what the name of the place is, it's a chain with several branches in Jakarta.)
Choki-choki is pretty cool too. :P

For garlic, it's bawang. If it's my bayang you're interested in, it's putih.
Last time I read this thread I couldn't past page #2, the torture was tremendous.
During my last visit, went to the office in Sudirman, the coworkers asked me if I wanted to have a nice lunch (and told me there were some cafe and sandwich shops near there). lol...I said you kidding me...give me nasi padang place (yes, even without air conditioning and a couple cats kept meaowing next to me as I ate lol..love it!!)
Anything 'kuring'.....padang (mainly kikil, paru goreng), rica rica stuff, and soto betawi, absolutely....I make it here with Indofood (or Munik) instant spice. Not sure if my cholesterol level can handle the ones in JKT (with babat, paru, lidah, etc) although last time I went there and had it a couple times I did just fine.
I've tried making martabak manis like 30 ridiculous times. All ended in epic failure, mainly the texture and I seemed to can't get the 'pores' to stay (all you martabak manis people know what I'm talking about..it's right after they open the cover, you can see the dough in the pan forming some pores before they slather two scoops of butter and sprinkle a handful of granulated sugar.....aaaaaaaaah!)
Parents smuggled a box for me (froze it and put in in their luggage). Took it to work as my lunch. Microwaved it and the smell of chocolate and butter was in my office....had a coworker taste it and she was like damn that is like super creamy, tasty pancake with lots of butter and extras in it.
LOL I can go on and on about food!!
Well, from your user name
What about Typical Indonesian food with Banana, Plantain, fried Banana, pressed banana with cheese...
They are typical Indonesian food are not they ...

Pisang goreng/panggang with keju....also good. But I don't know if anybody have tried the smoked banana before (usually you have to go to Bogor to buy it)..not my favorite at all.

Maybe I should change my username to Banana82 (my face looks like a banana too!), lol!
if u change your username we have 2 bananas here :D
So many favorites ... but the single best thing is sambal tempe goreng. I'm not sure if I have the name right, but you know what I mean ... it is the crunchy mixture of thin strips of tempe and dried chili that people use as an accompaniment/rice topping. Based on the taste and texture, I think they must marinate the ingredients in kecap manis, then fry it.
(BTW if anyone knows a better name for the stuff, please let me know. It can be surprisingly hard to find, and if I knew the right name I could ask for it.)
We call it "tempek orek" or "kering tempe", that's my favorite too :-) Add some fried small fish "ikan teri medan" and fried peanuts, hmm yummy...
My top 5 favorites :
1. Kering tempe
2. Rica roa
3. Pepes teri
4. Green bean soup (sop kacang hijau)
5. Klappertaart
