Jalan Ciputat Raya in the Lebak Bulus area has many shops lining the street if you like jati (teak). Most of the stuff there in pretend antique, traditional and minimalist styles. Be prepared to haggle long and hard to get a reasonable price. Take along a savvy Indonesian friend if you can.

Here's some clearly biased advise, as well. If you want ugly put-it-together yourself laminated fake-wood Ikea-like stuff, it can be had at most any mall or even at Carrefour. If you want expensive over-prices imported stuff (the gaudy pieces Indonesians seem to love to use to indicate, "I have arrived") check out furniture places in Kemang. If you want rattan, there is one place in Kemang worth a look -- CV Jaya: http://www.cvjayarattan.com/showroom.php. There are numerous furniture and carpet stores on Jalan Fatmawati especially at the Furniture Center Market, a multi-story building very near the intersection with Haji Nawi. (Lot of "if's here, but I hope it gives you a starting place.)

Although its probably not worth in for you, if you want export quality teak furniture at bargain prices go to Jepara (Fly to Semarang and taxi or bus the rest of the way). There are more places there than you can shake a stick at. Anything can be trucked back to Jakarta.

I have some other places you might like to try if you give me a bit more info on what you are looking for. Good hunting.

Waarmy is right; I second all his comments above. Aside from the ever-popular Jalan Ciputat Raya, Jl. Kemang Raya/Kemang Selatan have a zillion places (as suggested above, CV Jaya), and there is teak as well, at places like Asiatica. The Jalan Kemang Raya/Kemang Selatan stores tend to be expensive, though (and many are fixed price, although asking "is there a discount?" never hurts), as their target market is rich foreigners who have more money than sense. Don't ever buy on the spot; write down the dimensions and price and get the store's card, then shop around some more before making a choice. Only buy when you've seen and priced a wide variety of options.

Kemang Timur has some workshop-like places, similar to a small-scale Ciputat Raya. In these hole-in-the-wall places, bargain hard. The selection doesn't begin to approach Ciputat Raya, but the prices are often far more rational. We recently needed a box to store all the mallets for our gamelan, the original having been consumed by termites, alas. On Ciputat Raya, all the pretty boxes we asked about cost Rp 5 million and up. We got a very nice box for 1/10 that price on Kemang Timur.

For cheap, knock-down practical stuff like bunk beds and basic office furniture, Jl. Fatmawati is good.

I've been furniture shopping off and on in Jakarta since 1993, and although I try not to be too materialistic, I LOVE the furniture here and sometimes struggle not to buy something just because it is such a fine piece of artwork. We don't need to buy anything any more, having already bought plenty, but we still go to furniture shops just to look around because so much of what is available is interesting and beautiful; I always say that going to furniture stores is what we do instead of going to museums. You need to make friends with someone like me (I'm far from unique, as the lovely furniture has captivated many people) and ask them to be your guide while you search.

Maybe you should go to Pus's house and buy some of the items she has tired of. You get some good stuff on one side and an opportunity for more furniture shopping arises on the other. Bargain hard, though.

Atlantis, formal complaint, this guy Gicasaxt, is advertising everytime he posts a reply, I thought it was limmited to a single link per seller can you have some strong words or ban him please.
Nothing wrong with advertising, but once per seller seems sufficient.
he clearly knows nothing about Indonesia, uses wood which is non sustainable, his productts are not available in Indonesia and generally speaks codswallop

If you're looking for some higher quality stuff there's a restaurant/ furniture store in Kemang called Koi. It's in the celebrity fitness building next to McDonald's. They have really good wester-style brunch too. and a good Bloody Mary

They have a lot of recycled teak furniture that's made for export. If you're thinking of taking the stuff out of the country when you leave, it's important to make sure wood furniture is made well. Lot's of people buy cheap stuff that cracks in half when the climate changes. The designs are nice, and they have lots of styles. The prices are really good for the quality. You would expect to pay 3-4 times that in the states or Europe.

If you're looking for random stuff that's cheap, Kemang Timur is good. You just have to look around at all of the shops. Always try to get a lower price. If they don't lower the price, find some small accessory (if they have them) and ask them to throw it in.

Good Luck

P.S. I'm serious about the cracking. It may look the same from shop to shop, but there are few places that dry the wood properly. I used to build furniture, so I speak from experience.

Good advise from Chrisk on assuring that the wood is kiln dried or from recycled stock, which, as he mentioned, is particularly important if you are planning on moving the stuff with you to a temperate climate. Kemang shops generally have quality stuff, but there are few bargains there. To a newly arrived expat the prices might appear to offer good value in comparison to teak products for sale in Europe or America. When compared to products of similar quality available elsewhere, Kemang prices come into sharper focus. Shop around.

If you are in the market for quality pieces made from recycled jati (teak) check out these guys: http://www.habitatsindonesia.com/

Never! You'll pry my furniture from my cold, dead hands.

Also, here is a coalition of furniture producers committed to sustainability, Eco Exotic: http://www.ecoexotic.net/beta/index.php

I don't know how readily available their products are in Jakarta, but it can't hurt to browse the website.

One thing about the stores in Ciputat is that different shops may sell the exact same furniture at different prices (sometimes differing by as much as a million rupiah), so feel free to look around before making an offer. I get the impression that most of them get stuff from the same suppliers, with one or two exceptions. Sometimes I would mention that "This store next door has this for X million rupiah, etc." and I would normally get a good discount after that. As mentioned previously it helps to speak some Bahasa or to bring an Indonesian friend along with you. Semua harga bisa dinego atau dikurang!

If the web site is any indication they present the pieces they have will, but have such a limited inventory it would not be worth the trip for me. I note as well that the web site has no price information, not a good sign for those interested in good competitive value.

Is there anything to your "web site" besides a home page, dFelicita Interior? Not much more here than in your post. The phrase, "Needs Work," comes to mind.
