View Full Version : Pet quarantine at the airport
Hello,
My spouse, our two cats and myself will be moving to Jakarta soon. We’ve already contacted Groovy Pet and they will be assisting us with our cats’ import into Jakarta. Since there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival, I am concerned about my cats’ wellbeing while in quarantine. However, I was also told that I could shorten their quarantine stay if I apply for the “home quarantine” option. This option will allow my cats to be released from quarantine 10 days early, but the cost for the “home quarantine” is IDR 4,000,000 per cat and the 14-day quarantine fee still applies and must be paid in full. Has anyone imported a pet into Jakarta? If so, I assume your pet had to stay at the Government Quarantine Station at the CGK Airport. What was your opinion of the facility? Were conditions clean? Were the animals well treated? Your input is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Must be valuable cats if you are willing to pay 4 mill per cat on top of whaterver the normal cost is + airfares for them to get here.
I know you probably love them, but perhaps you could leave them with a friend at home and adopt as many as you want for free from the Jakarta streets?
How can you be so callous. It's someone's babies you're talking about!
This "Home Quarantine" for 4jt looks a bit dodgy. How do we know that the moggies are not going to escape House Detention and give someone rabies???
We brought our cat two years ago through Jakarta airport. She stayed in quarantine (at the airport) for 10 days. Home quarantine in no option in Jakarta. (they only do that if the airport has no quarantine facility) The facility is good. Friendly staff, clean (for sure not as clean as you might wish) and you have the possibility to visit cats whenever you want, during the day. Ok, our cat came home with a minor fungus infection of the skin and a couple of flees, but both are easily treatable.
Costs where: 100 USD for import tax, 60 USD for the facility and 10 USD for handling costs. 1 tip though: stay friendly and polite. The rules according quarantine change frequently, so prepare for unforeseen situations which can surprise you. If you get angry, the people will not cooperate and will not release the cats earlier then 2 weeks. So.. as always in Indonesia.. keep smiling and hide your anger...
Yeah even babies have a ceiling price. Sometimes you just have to say:
"The mill's closed. There's no more work. We're destitute. Come in, my little loves. I've got no option but to sell you all for scientific experiments."
What a shame they didn't go for that option when you where imported. (just reacting the way you wanted me to..kan?)

Is that directed at me? Obviously people on this forum no longer understand a joke. Sad day for EF...
"people" on this forum do understand jokes, maybe you should do that too?..
I was just responding with cynicism to what you were trying to provoke. no offense
no provoking here...just fun. Ever heard of it?
Oops...was that provoking?

Try me
Oops...was that provoking?
Provocating ... in the lingua franca of the forum.
We recently moved to Jakarta with our dog, and went through Jakpetz (we also contacted Groovy, but decided to go with Jakpez). They were able to speed up the process and our dog did not have to spend any time in quarantine! Of course we had to pay a lot extra. If you are interested why don't you contact Havi at
[email protected]?
What is it with this paying to NOT HAVE TO quarantine?
Is this just another scam?

Is this just another scam?
Yes...if scam means bribe.
Supposedly there is a definite purpose to quarantining incoming animals (detection of disease etc) and not simply to hold pets to ransom. Isn't paying for remission just another example of circumventing the law - for a price?
Yes... it is!
Short and to the point ... I like it.
Any other breaches of the law you'd care to admit to?

No worries.. like the messin..
By the way.. I agree with Gratilla and I strongly disencourage paying this money to animal immigration.
Only to get your beloved pet a couple of days earlier, you are bribing the officers and therefore will continue to be bribable (if it is a word), also in cases when it comes to import-export of almost extincted wildlife. Sure I thought about that option when it was offered, but I also realised that it would contribute to the continuation of this illegal practice and therefore chose to stick to the rules, pay the correct amount of money, be nice and in the end we could bring the cat home after 10 instead of 14 days.
Thanks for the helpful tips everyone! I appreciate the input!
I'm going to come in Jakarta with my dog and my cat. Groovy is going to help us, I chose the quarantine at home but for that you need to pay 100 $ the officer at the airport and no"receipt" for this bill, I'm sure you understand :) For the permit, the service ( groovy) the officer's fee, the quarantine at home, I'm going to pay 2000$ it's expensive but no way to leave my dog and my cat in quarantine for 2 weeks after so many hours in a plane. I heard so many bad stuff about the quarantine there !!

We just brought our two dogs from the UK and used Groovy to do the paperwork/collection/delivery this end and had our dogs in quarrantine for approx 10 days. We asked about early release but was told we would have to pay 4 mill per dog so we visited on a regular basis instead. With dogs you can exercise them, remember to take your collar/leads in luggage and do any grooming etc, (make sure you stand in the shade), there is a covered exercise pathway which you are welcome to use. While I was there visiting there were lots of other owners attending to their pets and none of them had any bad feelings about the kenels, they were clean, and the dogs looked after in similar conditions to UK. The staff were all polite and helpful and looked after our dogs well. They were fed twice a day and always had plenty of fresh water. On the last day I visited the kenels were full and just after I had arrived home I received a call asking if the dogs could be delivered 3 days early as they needed the space - so we got them home early with no extra fees to pay in the end! Happy ending!
I would have no reservations about putting our dogs there again should the need arise. Hope this helps to settle your concerns.
PS You can visit your pets daily from 10.30am and spend as much time with them as you like.
I would also like to mention that the staff at Groovy were excellent, especially Theresia and they made the whole experience a worry free one for me. I would recommend using them to anyone.

A Recently, a friend tried to buy one of my dogs but we found out that our dog should have been registered with PERKIN on delivery
What's this about? First, if you love your dogs enough to jump through the crazy hoops needed to import them to Jakarta, why would you sell one? Secondly, it is misleading in the extreme to imply (given that this thread may be consulted by people desperate to figure out how to bring beloved family pets to Indonesia -- companion animals that will never be treated as goods to be bought and sold) that dogs "should have been registered with Perkin on delivery." That would ONLY apply in the case of people engaging in the sale of pedigreed dogs with papers, would it not?
In its Kemang store, Jakpetz sells what appear to be pathetically inbred "purebred" animals, whereas Groovy will not engage in that kind of animal abuse for commercial gain.
It sounds like Groovy screwed up in your case, and I'm sorry for any pain your animals experienced as a result.
OMG I am reading all these threads and I am terrified! We are moving to Jakarta with our dog and I am in the stages of trying to find out how to do it! I was told no quarantine was needed. We are moving from Canada.
Canada is NOT a rabies-free country. Therefore, as far as I know, quarantine will be needed.

Please don't worry, as long as you have a good agent (I assume you are already talking with Groovy or Jakpetz) it will all work out in the end. The quarantine rules change from time to time but I think that for a price you can do a "home quarantine" at the moment. (Yes, that's silly, but before anyone jumps on the Indonesians for corruption, let me point out that I believe you can do the exact same thing in the State of Hawaii now, so it's not unheard of.)
I have made 7 international moves with 1-2 pets each time (for a total of 12 "pet-moves") and in the end everything has always been fine. Groovy has been involved in 5 of the 7 moves (we've moved in and out of Indonesia repeatedly) and they have always provided exemplary service.

What about bring the cats to surabaya? We plan to move to surabaya - east java on oct 2011 and will bring our 2 cats with us as for the info that we are moving there not temporary. how to apply the import permit for them? how much the fee? I know they said it should apply in the city where we going to life. any info will be appreciate Thank you
I echo Puswarna, if you are with a good agent (we went through JakPetz, so did a friend, we were both very happy with the experience), they should be able to provide you with all the info you need. They can also advise you on the airline to use, this is also an important component of travelling with pets.

No matter what anyone says the 4mil per pet charge for home quarrantine is a bribe otherwise why don't you receive any official paperwork and a receipt for it along with instructions on keeping your pet away from other animals? Surely this would be the case if it was legal? That said it's how things work here so you either pay and have your pet at home or don't and use the quarrantine facilities. As I said before the facilities were fine when we were there and if there is a problem with one of your pets you can arrange through your handler to have the animal vet checked. It might be worth being there for that appointment to make sure they are looking at the right animal and at the right area of concern. If you can, visit your animals daily, you can exercise your dogs and do any grooming flea/tick treatment etc., and you can stay as long as you like. Our two dogs survived fine and were non the worse for the experience. You probably have enough to worry about moving to a foreign country etc, without adding to it with the pets, I know, I did. But it was a relief to get them here safe and sound. We used Groovy and would recommend them and use them again.
Good luck with it all xx

Oh I agree absolutely; I'm not that naive. My point was not that the situation in Jakarta was legitimate, but rather that the idea of a "home quarantine" seems so ridiculous, period, that it is worth pointing out that it's not. I wouldn't believe such a thing could even exist as a genuine concept -- but I would be wrong about that. It is apparently possible to do a legitimate home quarantine, as evidenced by the fact that locations where corruption is much more limited, such as Hawaii, have adopted the practice.

Speaking of JakPetz, may I ask how much you have all been quoted from them and for what service exactly? Just trying to compare with the quote I've received. Thanks a lot for your help :)
