Yes... definitely for me. Too white makes you look kinda weak and vulnerable. Tanned and darker skin leaves a 'tough' guy/girl impression on me.

ah ... i think it is about man looking darker skin girl isn't?
It depends on the guy. Based on my observation I conclude that asian guys usually like fair skinned women while caucasian guys usually prefer tanned women. I have too few observation on guys from other race to make further conclusion.
Depend..
Asia Like Fair Skin and Bule plus Japanese Dark Skin....
Nigo OK?
I like both... hehehe..

Not sure about that in Asia. So why they got tons of skin lightening/whitening products there?? And why they use umbrella and not even rain outside?
I think dark skin in Asia meant poor or working class :p NO OFFENSE;)

I am European Male and I think like many other caucasian men are certainly more attracted by darker skin. This is why so many European women try to get tans, fake or otherwise...and is reflected by the number of tanning/browning adverts on the TV and the number of tanning shops and spas' . Here it must be the reverse for men because of the whitening adverts and array or products available. My indomesian GF is the same inspite of any words i may ofer.
It is true in Enland and India 100+ years ago that society women would keep in the shade as any colour to the skin implied that one had to do work and hence the umbrellas when outside.....in jakarta the umbrellas are used because the direct sun is so hot
PS look at the miss universe finalists this year...ok not asian but 90% latin american
( in jakarta the umbrellas are used because the direct sun is so hot )
If you said so..if that the case...men in JAKARTA will use some manner protections (at least umbrella)
(PS look at the miss universe finalists this year...ok not asian but 90% latin american )
That's done politically. You can never trust those things
Laterrrr

For men, color of the skin is a bit less important than for women. Financial stability is a more important criteria, from wht I noticed. Not to say that skin tan is of no importance... It's just less of an issue than for girls.
You will sometimes find men under umbrelllas to protect their skin... but many times, this is their wife/girlfriend who hold the umbrella !!! First time I have seen it I was really puzzled ! The guy was walking, and the girl was in a pain to try to keep the umbrella to the right position so that both get protection. Since then, I have not noticed it quite often. Dunno if not being chivalrous is a manadonese men specialty, but I really have trouble not to be shock when I notice it.:(

Really???
But anyway, thank you for letting me know. How ever everyone knows that and this is not only in Indonesia or Asia but everywhere in the world. I am pretty sure LOL:rolleyes::rolleyes:

HmmMM..I never seen this in Indonesia.
Does this penchant for white skin extend to anal bleaching? it's all the fashion now.
Interesting concept as the sun does not normally shine there and it tends to be pink in all races. Do not ask me how I know :-)

really depends on the personality of a person. darker or whiter is only a matter of race. attractive is another topic. you may look tougher as being dark however how tough are you really? vice versa, being white means weak / fragile, is it really obvious so that you can judge just by looking at the color of their skin?
tanned wants to be white, and whitey wants to be darker, it only shows that we are all human that never satisfy of what we have.
If necessary I can post photographic evidence that will disprove your theory.
I am more than happy to take your word for it :-)
Sometimes, in summer I used umbrella and I noticed some people looked at me and smiled. Probaby they thought I was funny or not normal :-) Anyway, I use umbrella because to be honest, its getting very hot in summer, could reach 39 to 40 C in the peak of summer, especially if I need to walk a lot because it easier than drive or take public transportation. I need umbrella not because I'm afraid of getting darker skin, because of the sunlight especially in Europe is not healthy anymore, too many wholes in the ozone!!. I rarely used umbrella when I was in Indonesia, but here, the heat just different.

Darker skin is more Melanin. It protects the skin from skin cancer from the sun. Often we see BULE got the sunburn. Darker skin is safer from the sun, so need no worries abt the skin cancer.
So don’t worry being a hitam manis.. wong buktinya digemari kok sama pria-pria luar..
I think olive skin is most attractive.

Darker skin is not a guarantee that you are safe from skin cancer.
Not smoking doesn't mean you won't get lung cancer - pokoknya jawabnya sampean opo???
You seem upset, did I bother you with my answer? Sorry if I did..
i think CA means that a non smoker with darker skin can also get lung cancer just like an attractive smoker with whiter or olive skin who may or may not get skin cancer, anything's possible

Some time ago I was reading an article in a Saudi English langauage newspaper on facts and fictions in Islam and the origins of certain practices and customs.
The article by an Islamic scholar was examining the origin of the veil.
Apparently the veil first surfaced in pre-Islamic Turkey where women used it to cover their faces so they would retain a light skin colour, as this was thought more desirable, the lighter a womans skin the higher class she was perceived, because working class women got sunburnt.
Today is Europe the opposite is true, one of my UK neighbours runs tanning salons, where women pay an extortionate amounts to look like they have been sunning themselves on the beach in St. Tropez for months.

For me, the worst aspect of this fixation on light skin is the overwhelming preponderance of "Indo" models and actors. And as in any other culture, what's promoted by the mass media becomes the approved standard of beauty. It's curious in Asia, of course, because the prejudice is class-based, not race-based. To look like you're kampungan, no, no, no. That just won't do! What a tragedy.
LOL...I am Asian, 1.5cm, 65kgs, rotund with sagging bits all over pointing as far south as Antartica, grey hair here and there, bags under my eyes, little flat nose, wrinkles...BUT I AM BEAUTIFUL IN MY HEART (and a brain which has so far proven not to be dead)...LOL.. they say beauty comes from within, personality, character, sincerity all make up the package. I'd rather be me rather than some plastic barbie either for my own vanity or to please and attract any men, Bule included. If people cant or wont like me or accept me for what I am, then they can lump it :) No offense to the barbie, but to each his own really.
LOL...I am Asian, 1.5cm, 65kgs.
You are kidding ! 1.5 cm for 65 kgs ? :) I always thought I was a bit overweight considering my size, but now I feel relieve to read this. :D

Do you think tanned or darker skin is more attractive than light skin?
People have diffirent physical attractions to skin colour.
It's very commom really , fair skin people have a preference to darker skin tones, darker skin people prefer a fair skin tones as well as if you have brown eyes you want blue and visa versa. Dark hair prefer blonde and so on...
I think ==confidence==is the key.
if we're just talking about skin tone then a light golden tanned SE asian skin tone is the only way to go. just thinking about my wifes legs, they would look half of what they are now if they were white. i love the golden coloured girls
some asian girls look good white, and i know asian men love the white asian girls. but a white western girl always ends up looking sick, or like she has something wrong with her. IMO
i agree
Yes... definitely for me. Too white makes you look kinda weak and vulnerable. Tanned and darker skin leaves a 'tough' guy/girl impression on me.
Attributing predilection for lighter skin to the cliche "opposites attract" or to "the grass is always greener" does not constitute a rigorous explanation. These are, at best, proximate reasons. The ultimate reasons for Indonesian preference for lighter skin is due to one or several of the following:
i.) darker skin is due to exposure to the sun which in agrarian preindustrial, societies means manual labor in the fields. This is equated with lower status and income.
ii.) lighter skin is associated with, in former European colonies, with power, status and wealth.
iii.) Formerly Indianized cultures associate dark skin with lower caste status. In fact, the original Sanskrit word for caste (a word of Portuguese origin) is "warna" which is the modern-day Indonesian word for "color".
In other words, Indonesian preference for light skin reveals a colonial(ized), agrarian, pre-industrial mentality. Modernity has nothing to do with shopping in Plaza Indonesia, having the latest HP, speaking English or having a white bule as a husband (although many an Indonesian girl thinks it is). Modernity is a state of mind, a mentality, a mode of thinking.
Coming from a very Caucasian guy, I can attest that other desirable features come with the dark skinned Asian female package.

The colour of a ladies skin comes along way behind in a list of what turns me on:-
1. a sweet face
2. a lovely smile
3. a pleasant personality
4. a well put together body
5. ability to hold a conversation
6. a genuine interest in me
7. a tanned body colour
As regards the biggest complaint many Indonesian girls have about themselves (no. 4) "my boobs are too small" - forget it, big boobs may look sexy, but many men will tell you there is no excitement in being told in the heat of passion, "get up, you're squashing my boobs". Nothing turns me off quicker than finding out that what God gave her has been supplemented by two bags of silicone.
No. 6 will get the response - "what a big ego" - no, just get turned off if the only thing the lady wants is a sugar daddy giving out presents.
Any lady who believes she fulfils no.1 to no. 7 is welcome.

In an article in the Saudi Arab News "Concepts of Islam", an Islamic scholar propounded on the origin of the veil in Islam, he said that in the distant past ladies in Turkey wore a veil to keep the sun off their faces to stay as light as possible as this was the fixation of the Turkish elite wanting light skinned women. When the Turks conquered the Arab world it became the habit of Arab women to follow the example of the Turkish women, and so was born the wearing of the niqab or chadri. The scholar wrote the Koran did not mandate covering the face, it was only an Islamic tradition in the more austere form from Wahabism.

Open attitude... I would even say " Super open attitude"
Having grown up in Latin America and multi-ethnic New York City, I've been exposed to the gamut of human colors, shapes and sizes since young. Further I am several generations removed from the countryside. Therefore, for me skin color has never been a marker of female beauty. Beautiful women come in all colors.
What I find particularly attractive about Indonesian women are things that are not culturally specific markers of beauty, but rather evolutionary markers of health and reproductive viability. What I am taking about is, for example, healthy and supple skin, lustrous thick hair and a lean body shape with narrow, high waist and generous hips. Another factor is the acceptance of a significant age difference between male and female which allows males to enter into relationships with females who are in their prime physical and reproductive age.
So there you go, you may think that there are cultural explanations, but in essence bule men attraction to Indonesian women can mostly be explained and understood through simple evolutionary biology.
I'm just going out on a limb here, but would it have anything to do with the fact that Asian women tend to be more open to bule men because of money and education? And the other way around because bules generally don't have to 'earn' their love, rather it's given more openly, less questions asked. Therefore, men have little 'fight' on their hands and can move into a relationship quite easily. However, in the bule's home country, women just may have slightly higher expectations, they don't tend to 'freely' give themselves to men.
I think it used to be the norm where a man would have to do the 'chase' and in a way earn their way into taking a woman's heart. But with such free availability of women where this isn't necessary ... norms change
Does this have anything to do with it at all??
Oooo...I beg to differ smatams :)
'Asian women tend to be more open to bule because of money and education'.. '...in the bule's home country, women just may have slightly higher expectations, they don't tend to 'freely' give themselves to men'..
Do not generalize please unless you want a kick up your bollocks :)
There are many highly educated, rich, refined and graceful Asian ladies who are married or partnered with Bules, and many because of love too. I also agree there are some Asian girls marrying Bule for economic reasons, namely in less fortunate countries with millions on poverty line. Likewise some of them too get abused by Bules in the Bules' country.
And there are many Bule girls (some not so educated, refine or rich) who are not so desireable, even to Bules or Asian men but happy enough to have loads kids (sometimes of various colours), and live on social security.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)..and its in the heart..otherwise blind people cant love whatever the colour of their skin :)
LOL...I just realised you're a Bule girl :)...so I take back the kick up 'your' bollocks..my apologies.. I'll just pull your hair instead...LOL.. or shall I let my cute filipina female personal assistant do that under my instructions :)
...Point taken. However, I still think that the idea I expressed has an unfortunately large degree of truth!
I have seen too many beautiful, gracious, gentle Asian women with western men that treat them so badly...
I guess it is one of those things that will always be there. And it is a shame that many women are in bad situations where they have no other option.
I wish I was in a position to mend the bad situations.
My heart is in the right place... aye?
I will also add:
Many Asian men have made very rude remarks to me because I am a white female, assuming that means I'm premisquious! (sp?) this is probably because of western media being much more sexual than Asian. It paints a bad picture of females from western countries!
I guess it goes both ways then, aye?
=)

True on point: beautiful, gracious, gentle asian ladies get abused by western men, and yes, perhaps they have no other option due to lack of education and information on women's rights or wife/partners rights. Stuck in a rut in foreign land and with limited help or dont know how to seek help. Again, western women too get abused by western men, asian ladies get abused by asian men. Its a global problem.
Sorry that you get rude remarks thrown by asian men just simply because you are a white young lady. Do you not get them in your country? by your own young man? Western media perhaps highlighted more freely about sexuality, unlike the Eastern way, although the sex industry is more prominent in Asia than in Europe where mostly it is illegal. You think you get a raw deal being female in western countries? Think about it, Asian ladies..western males (namely morons and imbeciles, more like it), immediately thought of us as Asian whores working in go-go bars..LOL.. time has changed.. no longer the portrayal of 'Suzy Wong' in deep heart of Wanchai like in the 60s. (you are too young to know of course)
Whatever the colour, its a matter of choice. Some buy love, some seek love. Either way, its a partnership, a compromise, an understanding, just to know the rules of the game is the ultimate price. My opinion totally!, then again, I dont know, as I do have friends in abused situations, and friends seeking white males for money and visas, its their choice...and oooohhh...I have good western male friends, who got done too by asian ladies...until they are flat broke!! Tit for tat, I'd say :)
that's a very honest reply, I appreciate it. It is a universal problem, not just in Asia. But in this particular forum topic it was quite annoying lol. It's only one face of a multi-faceted issue.
Somehow, I don't think the topic was meant to be this serious. I am just giving western male expats a hard time =) some of them can be sly, but I'm sure there are plenty who are descent as well ! I hope...
I think it's more depend on someone's personalty.
agree
Just looking around.... :):eek::rolleyes::D
Without a good personality it does not matter the colour except for the first few minutes.
Everybody thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence so white guys like tanned/dark asian girls and dark skinned men like pale girls.

that is so simple and makes good sense! I hope people don't think of me wrongly for my comments earlier in the forum... I love to see different cultures coming together - I wish there was more of it! I was only referring to the sleezy gentlemen that are found in the darker streets of town . . .
If it's so simple and it makes sense, what are guys who are neither of white or dark "supposed" to like? As I've argued before, the so-called "grass is always greener" explanation is not an explanation at all. It is a symptom rather than a cause. It description rather than an explanation. As in medicine, mistaking the sympton for the disease can have dire consequences. In this case, it can serve to mask or obscure racist, colonial, etc. attitudes.
I think the personality is more important....http://www.foxqq.com/biaoqing/paopaobing/paopaobing07/C4979F2B3A34566CE59EA354DDC97070.GIF
Interesting thread, so many opinions, thoughts and theories. There is a saying here down-under, it goes "if dont succeed the first time, try try again" i guess that can be applied to relationships also. I like many guys i didnt meet the right person the first time, then i met an amazing Javanese lady, now married and very happy, i guess i got lucky, very lucky.

Read and digest replies #47 and #53. I don't have the answer(s), but I do know the distinction between cause and effect, symptom and malaise, description and explanation, proximate and ultimate reasons. What's certain is that "the grass is always greener" is not a rigorous explanation at all. It is intellectual laziness passing for explanation.

Call it laziness of the mind or whatever, but grass is greener on the other side may be a result of unfamiliarity.
Like if you're thrown into a strange country, everything looks different and you're not prejudiced (yet) to determine what's ugly or pretty. You're so excited to be in a strange land and it will be so easy to see that foreign women are pretty.
You only need 3 seconds to decide whether you like someone or not, coupled with the excitement, it will be easy to strike a conversation.
of course as long they smart and good attitude

Ha...ha...ha.... this is funny??? funny threat... so many dumb question.
of course as long they smart and good attitude
This brings up a pet topic of mine. In my mind, there can be no clearer marker of intelligence ("smart") than language ability (and cultural knowledge), particularly those who speak more than two languages. Yet Western expats who can really hold their own, have a strong command of Indonesian language (and culture), are really thin on the ground. Yet, this doesn't seem to enter into the calculus of many Indonesian women when chosing a "smart" Western male. On one hand, I think this is due to (doubtful) Indonesian perception that all those from the West are "smart", otherwise they wouldn't be in Indonesia, right?
Any comments or reactions?
Hmmm, interesting topic there Mauricio. In my POV i do not rate intelligence by lingual ability. Im a whitey with absolutely zero bahasa skills (although only been here 1 month), and acfter 2 years in Singapore zero other languages either. I suffer from speaking English, which is generally regarded as the universal language and therefore am too lazy to learn anything else. But at the same time i do not consider myself un-intelligent, and do have a lot of fun with a girl even with a language barrier.
The premise is that monolinguism is not necessarily an indicator of anything, while multi-linguism can be an indicator of, at least, education and, at most, raw intelligence. The premise is NOT that monolinguism is an indicator of lack of intelligence. The premise is that multilingualism can be a manifestation of intelligence, not that intelligence is a manifestation of multilingualism.
You can be excused for not learning any other language in Singapore. Your self-confessed laziness would less defensible in, say, Indonesia.
As an aside, whereas English is as close as we have an "universal" language, the chauvinism and conceit of concluding, therefore, that one don't have to learn their language while others have to learn one's own language is self-evident, especially when one is in another's country.
Did i say they had to learn mine?

Here we go again...:D, another argument.... excited... he..he.. just kidding!.:D:D
As I stated before, the decision to use exclusively English in Singapore is defensible since most of the population speaks it in varying degrees and it is an official language of country. Not so in Indonesia.
Jenny, do you have anything of substance to contribute to the conversation, besides giggles that is?
Returning to the original topic and the ensuing fray, one way to argue, to explain the mechanism underlying the "opposites attract" pseudo-argument is to invoke studies that suggest that human beings are able, in close proximity, to discern the particular body scent of individual persons. A person's body scent, in turn, has been found to be linked to the same genes that play a substantial role in the development of the immune system. Therefore, smelling another person's scent is akin to smelling their immunological system. Body scent, in effect, is an indicator of health. But that alone does not provide an explanation for "opposites attract". Genetic and evolutionary theory tells us that the immunological system of those from mixed parentage is likely to be provide a wider net of protection against infection and disease than that of those who come from identical or near identical set of genes. Therefore, there is an evolutionary incentive to breed out of your own group. Those who smell "different" will also likely look different. Indonesian girls may think that they've landed a bloke with beautiful yellow hair and blue eyes. The same bloke is turned on by the lustrous black hair and the high narrow waist. Yes, they are getting that too, but more fundamentally, they are getting, what matters really, is the differing immunological systems.
Ease up on jenny mate
Anyway, im doing quite well so far speaking only english in Jakarta, aside from the odd direction to a cabby
Do you think tanned or darker skin is more attractive than light skin?

Ha..ha..
Well Singapore has Lee Kwan Yew, British give them an Independent and he wants all his people speak Global International language. He educate his people and provide them with English teacher (for free). That man is something ... I admire him, not just genius how to run his very little country that you can explore in a day, but he is HONEST, strong and NOT corrupt (Shame on Indonesian gov). He wipe off all those gangsta and try to make a better place to live for his own people. English is the first thing that He enforced when he become PM. But our 1st President?? busy to get laid by so many different sexy chicks, instead of taking care of his country. He even get a Jap wife that naked in many magazine . He don't even realize that his own people in the gov try to turn this country become one of the communist country (shame on him). He got sick... no one know what kind a illness ( prob STD from so many different woman that he slept with) and he died when the country still fight with the communist. Then... the second President is run this country for 32 yrs or maybe more, forget the exact years. He is so corrupt and powerful. He cant manage his own family, he has many gangsta every where that run the country. So many people missing every time someone try to criticism his work. Many news paper company he shut down because they talk bad about him. He is so powerful and he can make the whole country keep elect him over and over till he is so freak in old and his wife died...(rest in peace, sweet lady). But ya... if the Dutch and Japanese not become our colony we will not this bad. British colony... every country that they left is success and way better than Indonesia. But ya.... again... you want me to speak up?? I am speak the truth!! That's why.. Indonesian do not speak English like Singaporean people does. Because our President do not want to educate us and let us to be able to share information with international globalization. If we are smart enough... he probably get election twice term and got replace already. That's why... Our President is lazy, corrupt, monopolize, have no degree, just in military..which is...hmmm... every high school grad can go there. Oh well... sad story. Its Indonesia that I love..run by the wrong man for years and years. And its just getting worst and worst every time they get new president. Dont give me wrong... its my country, that I love and adore. Its too late for the change... if this is getting worst... all Indonesian people need together is REVOLUTION (France 1789-1799). Then it will change the whole picture....;)

I admire your spirit Jenny. You sound like a strong woman!
You go girl.
So many people know everything there is to know about the world, but so few actually do something about it. Put their words into actions. They think it's ok, they can just moan and complain and think they know everything. But until you actually do something, no one will take them seriously! Well, I won't lol.
Keep up the good work! :):)

We all do our part in various ways...I'm grateful to know your story and I totally support you 1000%. I to spend a great deal of time working in communities that most need assistance as a volunteer. I'm a product of the "Urban Inner City Struggle"...though I come from a Middle Class family, life was tough growing up in the city...So I got lucky, a couple years after college I tried out for a Football Club in the US as a Walk On...I got the job and donated my entire first years salary to a Youth Awareness Group in San Francisco, CA called "Street Soldiers". It is now a Nationwide Program with chapters in every YMCA throughout the major Metropolitan areas.
In either case, it was and still is the highlight of my life. I was one of the original members of the program as a teen. They pushed me to complete school and not give in to peer pressure as so many of my classmates were dying due to gang violence. Unfortunately this is still a major problem in the US. I was only active in the NFL for 2 1/2 seasons and most of that was plagued by chronic injuries...Nevertheless, the same streets that once could have decided my fate...spit me out.
And years later, I'm still here to tell my story. Should I one day be successful enough to go back to those same streets, I'll bring a few more of those lost souls out with me. The world is a beautiful place, and though football opened the doors of travel for me...Education has sustained me.
No matter how long it takes...stay the course. You'll be a better person for it and those kids in need of your help here in Jakarta will remain ever grateful as your legacy will be fulfilled while you're still alive and able to see the smiles on their faces. Should I be around when you return...I look forward to hearing from you...Charity is born in the heart and though I don't know much about medicine (in fact very little) I have no problems lending a helping hand!!!
Good Luck to you!!!!:D:D:D

NFL?? really?? which one?? Joey Potter (dolphin) is my reg customer. We are hangout a lot as his cuz got a crush on me for a long time. And Jerry Jones is my reg customer too, sometimes he bring many his player gambling and partying. And my bf best friend is use to play with SF, but he is old right now about 47 or something and had really bad cancer. But he is Exc. VP in a big hotel in Miami. I forget his name since I only met him once. Hm.... interesting!!
Thank you for the moral support guys, I really do appreciate it. It just so sad to see my little brother play mate is died because his parents do not have any money to guarantee the hospital. My family is a mid class family, I am a rebel and always come up different in my family. I never listen what ever my parents told me, bad girl, spoiled brat, perhaps rotten, always get what I want. My family is a religious well educated family. Mom is the greatest mom ever, dad is not so much when we are still a child but he is a great dad after we all grown up.
I never realize how lucky I am to have a privilege to study as much as I want. I have 3 private tutor every day after my school over. I am one of teen National Diver (Diving Spring Board) from North Sumatra, Medan. Finally I grow up and choose to be independent and left my home. Threat not gonna get any cents from my parents if I do leave home, is not scared me at all. I am really a bad daughter, after all I am the only daughter at home and the oldest. Then... I realize how lucky I am to be born in that family. I should appreciate it. I see many my relatives that are poor and has to pay tons of money for the hospital. Money that they don't even have. Then... they have to pawn and borrow something from someone. Its just sad... I keep promised my self that I will do something to help with anything to people that really need help. So I save and spend some of my money to send 22 kids going to elementary school. I help their parents to save some of their money. I paid all their school expansive, Its not that much compare my dollar, perhaps Its only 4 glass martini / month. 22 kids happy, educated, always had a good uniform, books and etc. What I get in return... happiness.... to see those little faces smiling, have a chance to be where other kids has to be in the day time, which is school. I have different kind a happiness, I am satisfied... and pleased...
Then... I got a horrible accident last year, roll over 4 times. Broke my spine L1-L4, torn up my left Lateral and co lateral ligament, broke my shoulder, broke my elbow, scratch all over my left eye and face... I am a monster. I can't move my legs, air lifted to the UMC then stay in ICCU for 2 weeks, then continue relocated to the Rehab for another month and a half. My car is total, but God is good to me. I heal fast... in 3 moths I am back to normal like Its never happen to me. I think because God wants me to keep do a good thing in this life. He want to keep me to do his work, I got a second chance....
I remember what I wanna be when I grow up, so I decide... to go back to school and when I am grad, I will make my dream come true. Help those kids back home. In school right now, I do volunteer with Three Square, Habitat and Humanity and help with the food for the church every sat.
Maybe my accident is just remind me things that I forget. Things happen for a reason. And I will not regret any of it, better or worst in the past... I want it happen just like that. Because It took me where I am right now.
Thanks for your support and if you still around in next 5 yrs... Of course I will need your help and so thankful. But I will be visiting this summer break. Hope to see you there.

what a great answer!!! I totally agree. Plus in every culture people want what they can't have. Dark wants light, light wants dark. Its crazy. But there are beautiful people of all skin colors and most of it comes down to confidence. No matter what, there is someone out there that digs the skin ur in :D and if they don't, they are not right for you, on to the next one!
I have to say that Indonesia is the place where I have been made most aware of my skin color. Just came back from the gym after an absence of several weeks. One of the first comments from the gym staff was about my darker skin tone. I still don't like it cuz I sense it is charged with racist notions and an implied color hierarchy. Saying that "dark likes white", I think, only serves to hide and justify this objectionable phenomenon.
i think it's just some kinda preferences, like when u ask "what's ur type?" tall, short, skinny, chubby, dark, fair, bla bla bla
i've never take that as a racist thought, mybe that's what we called opposite attraction :D

Wow!!! Not sure how to reply...Before the Titans...it was the Houston Oilers...my first team, got traded pre season, signed with the 49er's and tore my ACL/PCL during tryouts and spent pre season undergoing surgery so I retired...Couldn't get off injured reserve...So I walked away from it. I have been plagued with knee injuries since jr high school. I've undergone a total of 8 major knee reconstructions and 3 minor invasive operations (removing water from the knee and scraping away arthritis) to both knees!!! So it got to a point where I couldn't walk. It's natural for athletes to play injured. But when I played it was highly unregulated. Steroids was everywhere, and trainers gave out doses of Demerol like you'd take aspirin for a headache.
I spent more time and tons of money visiting Sports Clinics around the US and could not solve the issue. In fact my last operation was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Probably one of the best Sports Medicine Clinics in the world. After 2 operations in one year there...L/Knee (6mth rehab) the R/Knee (6mth rehab)...I just got really tired of the process, so time consuming, to much downtime in the hospital and I got addicted to pain killers (demerol....really bad stuff!!!) and also very expensive. I've spent as much on these knees as I would have on an Ivy League Education...I kid you not.
Even though it was a short career...I used to beat myself up over the fact that I never made it to the big game and I used to have all these dreams about having friends and family to come watch me play...but then I realized...I did something that was next to impossible...I made it, I overcame a ton of obstacles!!! I realized my dream of getting there...I will never forget the day I signed the contract...I felt like Will Smith in the "Pursuit of Happiness".
If you get the chance, watch the movie if you haven't...damn inspirational. Unfortunately I don't have any photos on this notebook. But will be glad to share some with you when I return home...Still keep a scrapbook!!!
But your story is a warm one...I like to hear stories of people overcoming odds to realize a dream...Seems you're well on your way. So its a date, I'll be sure to see you when you return. Send me a PM and I'll give you some personal contact info...as well as a number that can be reached at anytime in San Francisco.
Should I not be in Jakarta when you return...I'm not too far away, I've got family in Penang...so I'll either be there or KL, perhaps I'll even return to the US for a month or two...haven't been home since June 07' and I'm starting to miss it. In either case, we'll stay in touch!!!:D:D:D

Hey there...
Thanks for the love...I'm a firm believer in what you see is what you get. However, people spend so much time being preoccupied with trying to be attractive for others that they don't realize how much they are losing that sex appeal or the same thing that made them attractive in the first place.
"Beauty on the outside, does not ensure the same will be present inside" and I've walked that road time and time again...
And when I thought I had the destructive pattern realized and analyzed...Guess what??? I did it again!!! I've finally come to a point where I realize that "what may look good to you, isn't necessarily good for you"....
I have to say that Indonesia is the place where I have been made most aware of my skin color. Just came back from the gym after an absence of several weeks. Mauricio...
As you were so kind to point out in my "Can Someone Please Provide Some Insight" Post...Clearly as a people, we haven't managed to move past that point...Tonight I took a meal at a place in CITOS is it??? In either case, I asked if I could pay with a CC...Believe it or not I was asked to show ID. I thought to myself..."Well I'll be damned"...I only had my WSDL (Washington State Drivers License) and when I presented it, was told that I needed to provide a Passport (as if someone can't manufacture a Passport). Needless to say, I was a bit ticked!! But I kept my cool and insisted that they take the CC though I had cash.
They did, only after I was questioned so many times, as if there was linguist amongst them with trained ear who could determine beyond a shadow of a doubt, I was American, therefore was somehow issued a pass.
I left there feeling like wow...how can this country exist like this...I was only hoping that I would face isolated incidents, but that is clearly not the case. Then again, its not my country so who am I to say that their attitude is wrong...correct??? (input anyone????)
But back to the "Darks like Whites"...I would have to say, this whole taboo thing with "Forbidden Fruit" aspects is old, way before my time. I've dated women of all nationalities and because I dated Caucasian women and Asian women... I didn't somehow feel special...then I recall dating a black woman...who literally got upset when she found out I had dated other races!!!...hence the lecture, and she had a long walk home as well I'd imagine she was awfully hungry, in case the Snickers in the glove box didn't satisfy her!!!
On a close...I guess its safe to say that "Whites like Darks" too, because in the case of Mr. Dahmer, we have unequivocable proof...
"White man, living in a Ghetto...Eating Colored People"
Guess they taste like exotic chocolate to him!!!
Yet there are those here on this forum who hold that Indonesian predilection for light complexion has all to do with personal preferences and nothing to do with racism when, in fact, many times it is motivated by personal preferences informed by racism. They can perhaps be excused for the red-herring because before deceiving others they have already fully deceived themselves.
By the way, I am not particularly dark-skinned. I simply don't look northern European. Yet I, too, have faced this insidious racism. The questions that I've faced (eg. "why do you have black hair?", "do you dye your hair black?", this last question from an putatively educated Indonesian woman who works at the British Embassy here in Jakarta*) are symptomatic of the underlying ignorance. "At night a candle's brighter than the sun" says the Englishman in New York also.
* I was on a first-date with said woman. Talk about a turn-off!

I totally agree, the media with all its hype plays a major role in what is fashionable, sheek and over all depicts beauty as the "lightest most unblemished skin as possible, as highly attractive" Its a wonder to me how Naomi and Grace Jones ever got received as the most desirable women at some point in their careers. Women of all sizes, shapes, colors and fashion choice (perhaps I may be going to far, try to stay somewhat trendy...polyester suits and cat woman eye wear definitely will have you sidelined) can be and are beautiful in their respective rights...same bodes for the opposite sex.
Hence, Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder...but as a society we should be less pressed to shape the sight of others!!!:)
Mauricio...
Where do you get this stuff? How come you haven't landed billions of dollars on game shows? Your anecdotes seem to me, pulled out of a textbook that the rest of us haven't the privy to read...I really enjoy reading your comments.:)
I was hoping that they were, rather than anecdotes, arguments. Nevertheless, thanks for the kind words.
There's no textbook. It's just that I've been here for a few years, take an interest in the country, don't live in expat enclaves and speak the language. I've also lived in other countries (Asian and non-Asian, developed and developing) so I have comparative perspective. Many things that I've witnessed here have parallels in other countries. And yes, I play a mean game of Trivial Pursuit.

I was considering a game of Scrabble...but I'll stick to the playground where I'm the big kid on the block!!!:D

I haven't give much thought about this issue before. What I feel about woman's skin(never notice man's) is that it better natural and healthy.

Oh... I am sorry to hear about your injured. I am glad that its over... Wow... what a great story. Yes of course we stay in touch and maybe you fly to Vegas and we can meet up. Who knows?? :)

LA is less than 400miles...3hrs+
LV is about 570-600miles...5hrs+
Trust me on this, I'm from the Bay Area, been to nearly every Tyson fight, De La Hoya fight, Chavez fight, even partied with Mike (before he lost his mind) at his house in Vegas before. Ugly Coyote n the Crazy Horse were hangouts, in fact I was once an investor in the Crazy Horse Downtown San Francisco; so I'm pretty versed with Vegas. Even spent a few hours in the Police Station during a Biker Event a few years back after having a beer bottle tossed thru my windshield in a parking lot. I got into with the parking lot attendant who stood by and watched these drunk bikers acting a fool. I believe its still there, at the end of Vegas Blvd just a bit beyond the Stratosphere...hmmm Fairfax Street??? I attended nearly every March Madness Tourney hosted by UNLV and numerous other events as well as the fact you can rent Italians cars by the day...which is my favorite pastime.
Rent for a day or two and drive to LA and act like big shots...always a blast with my friends...By the way, next time you speak with your 49er friend...ask him if he ever hung out in North Beach, San Francisco on Columbus Street...maybe I know him (bar where we go after home games):D

Ha...ha...ha... I can't be speeding anymore after my horrible accident. 600 : 5 = 120/hr. I cant drive that fast... I only can go 10 above the speed limit... no more roll over for me.
I only can go 75 miles/hr which is took me 8 hrs to get there.
Mike is one of my customer... and OJ before finally he went to jail. Behind all the story about them... as a person when I talk to them... they were very polite and nice. I don't wanna know all their story... as my customer I have to be an actress to every one. I have to know who I am dealing with. I am and actress... I have to put smile on my face at all the time and ignored the background every customer that I had. I have met tons of fame people at work. I don't wanna know who they are... its the best thing for me, so I can do my job.
So its 8 hr.

In that case, make it 10hrs and take in the sights...hmmmm lets see...a cactus over here...a lizard over there...here lizard lizard lizard...hahahahhaha
OJ, is another story...As a teen, my home away from home was the Potrero Hills Housing Projects...I learned most of what I've come to know about how to handle myself in times of need, there and on other streets of San Francisco. Contrary to popular belief...he was no ghetto superstar. In fact he was a bum, his first wife Marjorie and his mother still live in San Franciso, he beat Marjorie and she had to brandish a firearm to get him off her...Ended in a Divorce, first and last time he layed a hand on her, she is a Domestic Violence Counselor for Victims of Violent Crimes in City Hall San Francisco last I heard. And his mother, Sister Simpson (bless her soul) would chase us of her stoop and call the police if we were out to late at night...One hell of a cookie baker also...I'm sure she still wishing that bum son of hers would put a new coat of paint on her house...But obviously he's got other plans for a long long long time!
