View Full Version : Flying to UK with Airasia
Hi guys
I'm thinking of hop back to UK within this 2weeks before my new job starts in Brazil.
Has anybody here used Airasia to fly back to UK? I believe that the route is jkt-KL first then to UK. I know it's dead cheap, unbelievably cheap in fact.
Just wondering how the flight is, level of comfort by economy class, food, any comments would be appreciated.
If I can save USD900-USD1400 why not right?
Cheers
I just checked and a return flight to London from Jakarta on Air Asia going out on June 12 and back on July 12 is $1270. Carriers such as Thai offer the same route for $1413 on the same dates. It would make sense for a one way ticket though.
You should check the dates, sometimes it's cheaper to go with a well-known carrier if you're lucky.

Not going to promote, but Emirates offer better rate $1234, or in pound £800 Jakarta to London return on 12 Jun - 12 July.
What I don't understand, the other way around London to Jakarta return, is much cheaper £543. Last year when I returned to Jakarta in September, it was £450 or $667. Really really cheap.
The only drawback is sometimes we have long transit at Dubai. In my case, I simply applied for Dubai transit visa £30 to spend days exploring Dubai during my transit. There are unbelievable too many Indonesians there.
Don't know about the price but out of the many trips that I have made between here and the UK, Emirates has been the most pleasant airline to fly with. When I first came in 2003 I paid 350 quid return. Ah. Those were the days :-)

My favourite is Qatar and cost of return to Manchester was $1200 when I checked the other day. On board service is very good and the seats usually wider than on Emirates. 2 problems with Air Asia X for me are the need to collect luggage at KL then check it in again, and arrival is at Stanstead which is a bit inconvenient for northern England. Note that if you are late for your transfer at KL you are stuffed - Air Asia doesn't do connections.
In March I took the family to London return on Emirates. It was much cheaper than air asia at the time. I can't comment on quality of service for air asia on the London leg, but I have been with them before from Jak to KL to Hong Kong and they were fine for a budget carrier. Emirates however is many steps above. Food is great, service is great, 500+ channels of tv, movies, music, games etc. We had 4hr stop in Dubai which goes pretty quick considering it is a nice enough terminal.
With Air Asia it depends on what date it is. The only downside for us, we are travelling with a 5 year old and an infant. We can get 4 ticket for christmas this year for £ 1700.00 with Air Asia (Air Asia charge children with the same fare as adult). But, after consideration will go with KLM, for around £ 2,000.00 that's for Ldn - Jkt - Ldn, while with Air Asia, we will pay extra tickets again from KL to Jkt. If you are by yourselves or all adults, might not be so bad. But I think, pay the extra if you go with young children :D
O, and with Air Asia, you also have to be careful with all the hidden charges as a lot of budget airlines do
Last christmas we could get ticket with Singapore Airlines for £ 1,600.00 and that's for 2 adults, 1 child and 1 infant. Couldn't find it anymore now :( Do you think ticket's price has gone up this year ? Or is it just in UK ?
Many thanks everybody!!!!! Some good advise here...
I still don't get any feed back on the <flight> experience though....I know it's cheap but really wanna check out how the flight is.....anyway many thanks to you all :-)
Hi,
I flew from JKT to the UK with Air Asia last year and it was fine. It's really not much different to any of the bigger airlines, the main difference is that any extras you want, you have to pay for. You can either pre book your meal or just pay for something on the flight. The only issue you might find with kids is entertainment. There were no tvs on the seats (well, certainly not last year, maybe they have changed this?) and so you would need to have your own entertainment if you were flying with kids but for me on my own, it was no problem. The plane was comfortable and clean and there were no delays and the cabin crew were as helpful as any other. All in all a pretty pleasant experience!

Reminds me of an alleged comment by Prince Philip on arrival in Canada.
How was your flight Sir?
Have you ever flown?
Yes I have
Well it was like that.

i did kuala lumpur to melbourne a year or two ago which was a long ass flight but almost empty which made it bearable. would rather take an uncrowded airasia flight than a crowded singapore airlines one over the same distance. no food, drinks or entertainment unless you pay, but the hot dogs are pretty good at a couple of bucks a pop and the heinikens for $2.50 made things a little bearable. the extra sized seats are a rip off as is paying extra to board first. bring your own pen as they charge you to use theirs if you want to fill in immigration and customs forms on the flight. in theory they apparently fine you 5 dollars or something if they catch you smuggling on your own food or drinks but in practice after the first 10 or 15 minutes the stewardesses will all be in the back gabbing and taking camwhore pics of themselves to put on their friendster accounts so likely they'll never catch you eating you own pack of pringles.
there are USB ports on the TV screens (which won't work unless you pay) but at least you can charge an mp3 player.
in my opinion take the airasia if it saves you significant money but otherwise cough up and take something better quality if the prices are comparable.
BTW they are very strict about the baggage weight so double check before going to the airport to make sure you're under the limit.
a couple of xanax will help also if you have access to them.
Hi my friend flew airasia to UK two months ago and he said it was quite ok...
