Ok, since it looks like I'm going to be a lifer here, my desire to learn more about Jakarta and Indonesia in general is expanding rather quickly :-P

One of the things I am wondering is what is the ceiling for teaching salaries?

From what I hear the salary range for english teachers is approximately between Rp 7 - 14 million depending on experience. Expats in management, directorship, advanced teaching positions and technical professions earn between 10 - 50 million. Some companies provide housing, car and driver. Another issue to aware of is pre and post tax salary. Hope this helps.

50 juta.. What schools pay that much?

I have a house and car through my wife's job. Mainly wondering if I should still be shopping around for a better salary or if I'm already as high as I'll go.

If you are an expat director of a local company than 50 million is very possible plus nice housing at the Ritz Carlton apartments in downtown Jakarta.

Best pay in town is JIS or BIS. The latter post their salary scale on the website. Obviously these schools are looking for qualified teachers with a good track record.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for :-)

What is the "scale" based on though?

Rp 7 - 14 million depending on experience

Instead of teaching Tom maybe he should consider a career in the fast food industry.
MacDonalds in london pay more than that for flipping burgers, Surely there is something more lucrative Elithium could do.

This is Indonesia! Don't expect western salaries unless you are transfered to a job here by a multi-national corporation or foreign embassy. NGO's would also be another exception but you could basically consider them a foreign company also.

Actually I could survive very well here on a western country Mc'Donalds salary... ;)

My after tax income is 30juta. Thanks for the insult though.

Living cost in Jakarta is much lower than in London. A single guy can live with Rp 7-15 million in Jakarta; not luxuriously, but definitely not at starvation level either.

I would say that you are doing quite well in Jakarta then! Most expats make much less then that. Congrads!

I know. I am just wondering if I can do better. I'm not a teacher by trade by a teacher by circumstance :-P I couldn't get a job at any of the good international schools. Do any english schools pay better?

A friend of my wife makes Rp 40 million as curriculum director, and he's Indonesian (albeit a U.S. graduate). Seems like you need to get into management to earn more.

Many teachers make more than that, working for International or reputable National Plus schools. In Jakarta, it would be considered the lower bracket.

My problem is those schools wouldn't give me a second glance :-P

I was starting at the low range for the typical English schools like EF and ILP. Other no name Universities could pay between 12-15 mil. Good International schools do pay more by I would think 30 mil would be close to the top range.

Teachers with experience and advanced degrees can make over 50 million a month at the highest paying schools here.

Yeah I saw that. I lack the credentials for those gigs though. Probably lack the skills as well.

Would schools consider an Indonesian degree? I mean, if I got a masters in education from UI or ITB or something like that, would it help me to land a job at an international school?
