Anyone out there living in Jakarta and into music?
I arrived in Indonesia two weeks ago and I'm trying to meet new people and find fun things to do. I'm interested in both watching and playing music (although I don't have any of my own instruments at the moment). I like all sorts of genres: classical, rock, jazz, hip-hop, etc. I'm a drummer and percussionist, and I can play the keys a bit. Haven't played in awhile, but if anyone wants to jam I'd love to get back into it. Or if anyone knows about some good venues for watching/listening I'd be interested in that as well. I'm mostly interested in live music, by the way. When I say venues I don't mean clubs like X2, Red Square, etc...
Thanks!

Are you interested in learning about traditional music on Java? I play with two Javanese gamelan groups (mixed Indonesian - expat) that always welcome new members. Almost everyone is a beginner so newcomers can join any time. Both groups meet at private homes in Kemang, one on Sunday nights and one on Thursday nights. If you are interested, PM me and I'll give you specific details.

I've also recently learned about a resource in Jakarta for learning Sundanese gamelan - the musician (from Sunda, living in Jakarta) who is looking to set up classes is also a jazz/world music player, I think. I am not pursuing that opportunity because all my time goes to Javanese gamelan, but I'd be happy to put you in touch with him if you are interested. I know a couple of American musicians with a passion for world music have started talking to him about lessons, so maybe you could join in on that effort. Again, PM me if you want details.

Is it Saturday night? ...
Yes, it is.
Go to Jaya Pub. Next to Menara Imperium, accross McDonalds Sarinah and Sari Pan Pasific Hotel, Sudirman - Thamrin. They play good music every Friday and Saturday. The band is very friendly. Be a good boy and they may let you jam with them. The food is not good, though. So i suggest you to go with a full stomach and a dry throat. Have a good Saturday!

I've heard some people say that there can be some great live music to be found in Jakarta. I love going to a live gig so hope to find some good ones when I arrive too. It would be great if people could recommend some more good spots along with the one Carrot Cake has recommended.

Carrot Cake, you really are a fountain of useful knowledge :)
