Hi guys. I have a friend from the US coming to visit next week. He is hoping to find a job as an English teacher and take up residence here. Does not speak Indonesian though. Anyone know how he can go about trying to find work? I told him that I thought that it would be very difficult. Oh, he IS married to an Indonesian.

You (better still your friend) should read through posts in branches below on ex-pats seeking employment and jobs for ex-pats. Also check Daveseslcafe.com, tefl.com, seriousteachers.com for job postings. Make sure he understands work visa process...he should have started the process long before coming. As it is now, he will be illegally employed if he's on tourist or social visa (check the laws & visa branch also below.)

That's to start...next, if you (or he) are going to post here (in the appropriate branch) it's helpful give an idea of qualifications...does he have CELTA/TESOL/DELTA and/or BA or greater plus experience in the classroom? Teaching is more than showing up in a classroom because you happen to speak the language.

If he is just wanting private tutoring jobs, he needs to be able to sell himself, but as mentioned he'd be illegal if ever caught.

Also, is there a part of Indonesia he wants to be at? It is, after all, a very big country.

Good luck. :smile2:

If he's good at math, I may be able to get him a job where I work paying better than most other tefl jobs. I'd have to meet him in person and see what he can do first though.

Thanks Guys. I know that the chap doesn't want to do anything illegal and would not attempt to work before getting the necessary papers. Also he will locate wherever the work is. I think that he does have the qualifications as he was teaching in China for a while but I'll find out. Supposed to visit here next week just to check the market so I'll be in touch

Anyone know how he can go about trying to find work? I told him that I thought that it would be very difficult. Oh, he IS married to an Indonesian. Several things for your friend. If he is thinking having his wife sponsor him - DON'T, if he wants to work. As far as I know, you can't have both.

Let me know his qualifications - CV, Certificates, etc - and I might be able to find him legitimate work with SIB School of Language. You can email all the info to [email protected] Visit our website at sibschool.com to find out about us.

Actually it's not that difficult to get a job as an English teacher in the English schools if you have some kind of certificate to teach English or have the experience as you thought he might have. National Plus and International schools are a different matter.

An English school, such as mine and others, can offer a KITAS and visa, plus a decent salary for about 20 hours of teaching a week. Native speakers are considered valuable and schools do whatever they can to get them - if they have a need.

Have him send his info. I can't make any promises.

Oh, it's important about age. Over 60 forget the National Plus and International Schools. The other English schools are not normally that picky, but usually want younger if they have a choice.
