Hello,
Could anyone help me translate this: "numpank lewadh" in english?
Thanks in advance...
Michal
the correct one is "numpang lewat" hehehehe ...
it is mean like an advertisement ...
Littlest Hobo
09-09-08, 02:18
I think Jakartateam is just playing with words...
Radit, why did you say the meaning is like an advertisement?? I myself don't get it. Isn't it like "let me pass"? sorry unless it is ABG words?
Hmmm....I remember when I was kid when we walked by any cemetery, we had to say that...numpang lewat...like say it about ten times!
jakartateam
09-09-08, 02:19
mmmh... ok...
That's a bit weird... thanks you very much!!
radit_bezit
09-09-08, 02:23
But somehow, it is being used to interupt ppls chat to said something really off the topic ....
"Numpang lewat neh, tapi mobil di depan itu punya siapa?" or "Numpang lewat, tapi saya punya product baru yang dinamakan Jus jeruk."
and more further for advertisement, we will said it that he just "numpang lewat" ...
And sure the real mean (dictionary) of "Numpang Lewat" is "let me pass" ...
dont you go Sleep Littlest Hobo? It is early morning

you know what would be a good idea concerning indonesian slang... it would be to create a glossary with the sms slang like aq=aku, skg = sekarang... it's very hard for bule to read some sms because of the abbreviation you use...

that's very interesting... i'm really interested in learning all that because i think it's the most difficult when speaking with indonesian people... i've been two years in Jakarta but i'm still not able to fully understand a conversation very well because some words block my understanding..
radit_bezit
09-09-08, 02:56
i like this actually ... many indonesian not notice about it ... so if you are talking with indonesian and said "omgd", he/she will pass it or ask you what is the meaning? kind a cool, huh?

hmmm ... what else ya? yeah i will try to list words that comes up lately ....
"katro" = kampungan - it is a javanese word but become famous because of one funny show "Empat Mata" in Trans TV, so you may see indonesian moking to another indonesian with this word.
"secara" = this word have a little bit different meaning from the real one .... it can be become "because of" like
a : "lo kenapa ga pake baju?"
b : "ya iyalah, secara gw baru mandi."
thats all for this time ... needs to cook ...

Interesting. I knew about the first one, but never heard about "secara" being used the way you did. Anyway (;)), I am not often in Jawa so I don't keep up to date with prokem or local variations.
I am far less comfortable in Bahasa Indonesia than in my manadonese dialek.

problem is it changes all the time. new phrases and abbreviations come in as old ones become, so yesterday.
Also with many of the sms abbreviations you can make it up as you want, or some friends will have some agreed ways of typing something and others will have another........
I'm off to school to learn Indonesian.. With school and the guys at work, hopefully I work it out! I hate not being able to communicate with the locals!

BI is somewhat easy to learn. You will catch up quickly with it if on top of that you don't stay stuck in a "bule" circle of friends. Socialise with everyone from the tukang bakso to the boss of your bank. You will learn a lot. Though... I may have socialised a bit too much with tukang bakso which may explained my rather unusual behaviour/style for a so called bule.

yes it is, ow king ... you know it very well ... and the "Bahasa Gaul" changing and in every community has a different name ... so don't worry to make mistakes ... cz a lot of indonesian doing it also when coming to new environment ...
Few things become nationalized, and it is became famous because television program such as Empat Mata, Extravaganza, Lenong Betawi, Akhirnya datang Juga, and so on.
and if you dont know about bahasa gaul, an indonesian formal use very acceptable in every conversation. and you will become get more respect in using it. Using a bahasa gaul sometimes making a missunderstanding between communicator especially when talking with older ppl, hehehe ... so dont use it to nenek-nenek and kakek2 yah ...

Adu... Don't tell me that ! I had my share of "astaganaga" and it took me two years to get rid of thi word. Anyway (;)) I don't say it anymore but I traded with another bad habit in Manadonese!

Have to agree with this.
Am actually an Indonesian but have been away for 10 years by now so I don't even understand the current slang and even forget some words already!
But... I speak Japanese as my 3rd language and learnt German and French too a bit before, and I can definitely say comparing all of these languages with Indonesian, Bahasa Indonesia is really easy, trust me!
There are no changes for say plural form unlike the European languages, no masculin nor feminin adjectives, nouns etc. unlike in French or neutral one too for German; no past tense per se; and the beauty of it is that what is written is what you say pretty much a bit like German.
What I found from my stay in Japan let's say, where the language has different levels of being extra polite to address customers let's say, plain formal e.g. to talk to lecturers in univ., plain form to friends and then slang, as a non-local as long as you know the plain form to communicate, that's good enough.
I actually don't mind having a language exchange between Indonesian and French and/or German. Cause I have to be off to Europe again to work at the beginning of next month most likely and in the country I'm staying the 2 languages are used a lot and my French and German still suck :(

Manadonese is not that far from the real bahasa. If you do concentrate you will be able to translate what I wrote. Nothing difficult.
About passport, this is a good thing that you did it. My son is very proud of his two passport (specially sinc he knows that is father and mother only have one) and it helps him to better understand that he is french AND indonesian.
yes, Atlantis, I agree with that. :) Manadonese usually blends some words, like dorang from "dia orang", isn't it?
:) I have some manado friends..:) and I miss one of them, who is in Italy now. :(
yes, Atlantis, I agree with that. :) Manadonese usually blends some words, like dorang from "dia orang", isn't it?
You are right, not only we blend the words, but also we shorten them (sudah jadi so, punya jadi pe...dll) and we love to add some foreign words mainly from belanda (such as "maar" or "voor"). It wouldn't be complete without a bit of portuguese and chinese words and a very keen tendancy to put "a" instead of "e" almost everywhere (eg. Samua, bardoa, mangarti and of course... Manado).
It makes a colorful language and to be honest, I feel much much more confortable with manadonese language than with the real good bahasa indonesia. Though, I understand it (I have no other choice if I want to read kompas or any text of law because there is not yet a manadonese version of them), I barely use it. Speaking manadonese in Manado, for a foreigner, is definitively a must. It ensures you the support of the local population and you manage to get anything done and any door opened in less than the time it takes you to ask for it.
Manado... Kita cinta pa ngana...
It seems you are an expert in Manadone now!! :)
Numpang lewat = excuse me, should be compatible.
