View Full Version : I want to learn Indo(Bahasa Indo) this summer in Jakarta/Surabaya
Hey all,
My name is Judy and I am very interested in learning Indo this summer(maybe for one month)....
So I am doing some research like how much does it cost to live in these 2 cities....
Do you guys think it may be better for me to hire an personal teacher or enroll in an university language program?
Which is cheaper? I kind of have a tight budget.
Coz I do have lots of indo friends and they would like to lived with them.
Any suggestions?
Thank you guys!:)
Judy, your questions are kind of vague, but I'll try to answer as well as possible:
1. I'd start the basic bahasa Indonesian through Rosetta Stones.
2. The cost of living is varied depends on your life style. Most people make 100 USD per month here...
3. I believe enrolling in an University could be expensive, so does hiring a personal tutor (I priced a few of them, forgot how much they were, but remembered that they were pricey, hence I didn't hire them). But I could be wrong.
If you have Indonesian friends, why not ask them to teach you? The kids on the street, the neighbors, the driver, the maid, and most people around me ended up becoming my teachers. Everyday.

Learn from someone qualified to teach. One thing that I´ve found with the Javanese is that not only do they use a lot of terms from Javanese when speaking in BI, but also many times they are not even aware of it or may not know the BI equivalent (if one exists). Also many Javanese have a very peculiar and very noticeable accent, often referred as medok, which is not how you want to speak.

Go to Yogyakarta, there are some great BI courses with nice cheap homestay, great sorroundings.
I recommend U "Alam Bahasa". It is a great Indonesian course school. Search that school & U can ask anything, they will help U with anything U want. (accomodation, travelling, sports, entertainment , etc).
Hi Judy,
my name's Karel. Studying at university in Europe currently. Will travel to Java this summer to study bahasa Indonesia. If you want, we can look for a school/solution together. What's the level you are at at this moment? I'm thinking about an intensive Bahasa Indonesia course. Should be fun!?

There's some institute offering a Bahasa Class for the foreigners...google out IALF
If you guys are just looking for someone to converse with or learning conversational Bahasa, I can probably volunteer for that and we can do it over coffee or phone or something. This is not gonna equal out to a real language education though, just strictly conversations and, of course, meeting new people.

Yess.javanese and BI is a big difference, medok" terms is to define the accent of java, this kind of accent is also should be funny in jakarta.. hehe hmm
BI is the universal language for indonesian,, Indonesia consist of thousands ethnic and languages I guess. Anyway BI is quite similar to Malay..,
The vocabs is 90 % the same, it s just the accent is different.
Sumatra and kalimantan is close to malay, theis indonesian language is the best I think, hehehe,,
But don wory about the accent, as long as the artsiculation is right , it s okay.. good luck,, any way I can teach you but only on night hours on certain days...

u can learn Bahasa (Indo language) from ur Indo friends, and living wd them is the best way to learn not only learn bahasa but u can learn it culture.. u can ask me if u need some Indonesian tutor in jakarta..
Personally I learned Bahasa Indonesia without the help of a qualify teacher but in working and hanging around with people + the help of friends who teach me, and believe me, it's was very very effective. I'm frequently ask to be a translator in meeting and training as I use correctly the daily life language (not the local one, by the way), instead of the formal Bahasa Indonesia that we just use in writing. In the context of a training, it's very useful to speak the way people do. But if you also wish to learn to write Bahasa Indonesia, as Hombre said, you better take a class with a good teacher.
If you just have a month, my advice is to go in a place where you would not find any English speaker. A complete immersion will makes your learning definitively more faster and effective.

Is it really possible to learn formal and informal Bahasa Indonesia at the same time with a teacher? :confused2:

Hi Judy..
Jakarta is probably more expensive than Surabaya. I'm sorry I can't provide you with numbers but I'm sure this has been discussed on the forum before. I think the difference will be insignificant if you are only staying for a month and you will be staying with friends. The cost of traveling from the airport in Jakarta to Surabaya will probably eat up whatever you will save by living in Surabaya anyway ;)
If you are coming for only a month I would recommend that you get a private tutor for 2 hours a day. Learn the formal language from the tutor and then have fun with your Indonesian friends in the evening and have them show you how they use the language informally. It is a lot of fun to first learn the rules and then learn how to break them :)
You asked whether you should do a university course. That is a great idea if you are staying longer than a month. BIPA at UI is a good program (http://www.ui.ac.id/en/academic/page/bipa-programs).
This one enables you to stay longer to learn Indonesian for free ;)

Well, I don't really know, I guess it depends the teacher and his or her approach. I think try to find a teacher who will understand well your goal : Do you want to become quickly fluent in speaking and be able to handle a conversation and understand what people say between them? Or do you want to be able to read the newspaper? To write a report?
What you should know it's, as for most of languages, a great difference between the daily life speaking and the formal writing Bahasa Indonesia. This is just my experience, but I learned very fast with a good Indonesia friend who teach me the basis and than in hanging around and working with people who don't know English. I'm very fluent after two years, and if I speak to the phone with someone who never meet me, no way he or she can heard I am bule.
I think the best is to get both : A good class, and a lot of practices with people.
Just re-igniting the thread.
I'm looking for a good intensive bahasa class course - say e.g. 2-3 hours per day for a 2-3 month period, no past experience with bahasa. I'm based in Jakarta, so cannot go to Surabaya or Yogjakarta which seems to be what people recommend. Also, I prefer a class because compared to having a private teacher this is an opportunity to start sbuilding a social network as well. So let me know, who has good experiences with class bahasa learning in Jakarta?
Yes "Bahasa Tarzan" :decision:
