View Full Version : Moving my dog from Bandung to Bali
Hi
I am currently living in Bandung and will be moving to Ubud shortly. I have a Golden Retriever. He's my best mate, well apart from my wife, so will be bringing him with me. I have been told that flying dogs in is not allowed, but it is OK by surface using an agent. He has got all jabs etc. Has anybody had any experience of similar move. Just a bit scared about reading about dogs being put down without question. Any advise really appreciated. Mike

Who said flying dogs is not allowed ???? thats bullshit. I flew my Siberian husky from Jakarta to Sumatra in 2000. As long as you are prepared to pay the cost (about the same as a seat) he is in a proper plastic transportation pet carrier approved by the airline, and have a letter from the vet saying the animal has had all his injections and is fit and healthy then most of the major carriers in RI will be happy to take him. My dog flew Garuda.

On a footnote to my last post you need to consider the dogs comfort. What would be more distressing for him?? a drive to the airport in the car and then a couple of hours sleep in a box and then a car drive to his new home or 2 days in the back of a bumpy truck travelling overland in a box?? can you ensure that this "agent" will feed water exercise and clean the dog box. Indonesians treat animals badly at the best of times, for an "agent" he would be nothing more than cargo and treated as such. If you really love this dog start phoning the airlines directly.
Of course you will be told it cant be done by agents that want your money. Good luck mate and hey..............welcome to Bali.

I am planning to move from Perth (Australia) to Bandung.
Can you give me some advise how I should transport her? She is 10 kg.
Is it true that once you bring your dog into indonesia then we cannot bring the dog back to Australia?
Thank you.
If you take your dog go on the same flight, then you can delivery and pick up on arrival and departure for that flight, my only concern would be Rabies, but Im sure you have had the pet treated against that dreadful disease

Who said flying dogs is not allowed ????
Well, there are two issues here: first, the rules have changed several times since 2000. We had a much bigger hassle moving our pets to Indonesia in 2007 than we did in 1994 or 1999. If I am not mistaken, the rules have changed several times just since our latest move.
Second, *Bali* can be a special case. Just because you're allowed to fly a dog into Jakarta doesn't mean Bali will allow the same thing.

Port of entry must be CGK airport Jakarta. From Jakarta to Bandung can be done by car. To bring her back to Australia, your dog needs to stay in a rabies-free country for at least 6 months. The nearest rabies-free countries are Singapore and Malaysia.
Also I am not 100% sure but I seem to remember an earlier thread where Bali was mentioned as having restricted pet movement there due to the large number of rabies cases.
Not sure if it is still in the archive, but it was not that long ago if my memory is correct

It's absolutely against the law to bring in or bring out dogs from Bali at the moment. It doesn't matter if they have been vaccinated or not. It's a stupid rule since other islands in Indonesia have rabies, but Bali is the only one with this rule at the moment.
For more information you might want to check the Peternakan in Denpasar. Luckily, Bawa as finally got the go ahead to use their vaccination program island wide so the rabies epidemic might be resolved soon enough. Sending an email to Bawa is another great way to bet some information as to the current rules for importing and exporting dogs from Bali.

Dear all, dear Delmarisco,
When did you fly from Amsterdam to jakarta? Did you use Garuda all the way? I will move to Indonesia next year and I will bring my rabbit pet with me. the problem is most of tyhe airlines don't allow rabbit in cabin. Rabbit will not survive when transported in cargo or as baggage.
Can somebody help me?
Have you asked KLM? I know they have good reputation for transporting animals. I've read somewhere that a lady was allowed to carry her rodent in the cabin.
Transporting your canine to Bali is illegal for now. At least until the rabies epidemic is under control. I hear as of this month they have 60% of the 350,000+ island dogs are vaccinated. 70% is considered effective percentage and they probably won't abolish the ban until a few more years.
There are though semi-legal ways to bring your canine to the island. I suggest you start talking to people in pet stores in Bandung. Chances are.. their breeders are shipping dogs to Bali. Once you do get them to Bali you would need a special government issue red collar that shows that they have been vacinated. If they don't have the collar the local authoraties may shoot your dog. No kidding. So it helps to know people all over i guess. Good luck.
This is 100% impossible, importing or transporting pets outside Bali to Bali is a Total Red Light (BANNED), you could get prosecuted and your dog will be burned into ashes upon arrival. You should checked the Badan Karantina Hewan, before transporting an pets to Bali, because it's still in Rabies Free Zone of Indonesia.

Mike, I've moved three dogs to Bali. Two from Jakarta and one from Surabaya. As far as i know you cant fly them in, we were told stories of people doing this from Jakarta but it appears they were just that...stories. My wife got in touch with an airport official in Bali, one known for facilitating any problem as long as there is a cash reward and he said 'no way'. Even money wasn't the issue.
We achieved it in the end by using one of the agents who advertise on www.anjingkita.com (a great site for anyone looking for a particular breed of dog, as always do your homework and check out the breeders but generally, or in my experience, the site advertisers are reputable). They organize trains and ferry to Bali but you will need the dogs passport, the journey costs about 400,000rp per dog. There was a horror story in the press recently when the owner of a litter of St Bernards used this service albeit to another part of Indonesia and 3 of the four died. Tragic story but i was happy with our agents. We had to supply the cages and water bottle and i just made sure i bought the biggest i could. Alternatively Groovy and Jakpetz in Jakarta will organize it but its not cheap (we were quoted 8 million in our case) and i don't know if they use the same method and just ramp up the charges. I had no problems and the dogs arrived happy and clean and are loving the clean air and abundance of space Bali offers! Hope this helps. Aidy
