Hello,

I am a student of International Business at the University of Economics in Poland. I am writing with reference to the university project that i'm involved in and hope someone here could help me on this issue.
The project concerns pregnancy tests in different countries and my job is to investigate Indonesian market. Because of the specificity of the product it is not easy to find any broader information about this market via Internet and this is why I would like to ask you a few questions.

1) What are the biggests companies offering pregnancy tests in Indonesia?
2) In what kind of selling points are pregnancy tests available in Indonesia? or solely in pharmacies?
3) Does the products availability differ according to different regions in Indonesia?
4) How would you describe the general attitude in Indonesia towards using pregnancy tests? Is it a common practice?

I would be grateful for any response from you both reffering to the questions above as well as your own guidelines about the topic.
Thank you very much in advance.

I can give you are partial answer.

The tests are are available in almost all the bigger pharmacies but smaller town/village places don't always have them. Supply and demand.

They are bought openly and without anyone caring either way in this area.
Marriage is pretty strict around here so an unmarried woman buying one would have to do so where she was not known unless it was for a family member.

I know several ladies in this village that have used them and speak openly about it so I assume there is no taboo on the subject.

Hope that helps in the absence of a fuller answer from another poster.

I will tell you that I have never seen so many pregnant women in my life. Every where I look, there are pregnant women and babies running around. The population is growing!!!!!!

Just a suggestion
For any market research project the purpose is to get the opinions from those who represent the most of the market(to reflect the most correct market trend), so in your case especially question#4 you want the opinions of the common Indonesians, not expats who only live here for 3 years or less. Best shot is to see if their wives/husbands (who are born Indonesians) can answer you those questions.

But for the first three questions there might be some expats in pharmaceutical industry who can help you.

I know about Sensitif, where else can you buy it apart from pharmacies?

Apart from pharmacies can buy it at minimart/supermarket, medicine stalls that opens only at night along the chinatown (yeah in jkt we have that kind of thing too exactly like the food stalls) .
From Puskesmas ( the government clinic ) can get it for free, but of course depends on each clinic..sometimes still have to pay some money.
There are several brands here and the price varied from around 40 cents - $5

any more ideas?

and i have one more question, maybe not so realated but as i'm already here- i found an information that green colour is considered as "forbidden" in Indonesia? How do you see it? If let's say i' like to sell a pregnacy test with a green packaging would that be possible? or would it carry any additional meaning?

thank all for your answers

Green is often seen as the colour of Islam. Mosques or Islamic schools often have green signs.
I don't know but would guess condoms and any other product concerned with sex would not use it.
That is only a guess as I never use condoms so never bother looking at them and have only once seen a test kit at close range and can't remember.

The only reference I have heard of Green being bad here is the legend of the sea goddess, Nyai Loro Kidul, in Pelababuhanratu.

http://www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Pelababuhanratu-1980.html

People there believe that she likes the colour green. Allegedly people who have worn green swimmers in the ocean there have disappeared. One family we know of went for a holiday there and the son wore green shorts. The water very quickly cleared of locals.

I have been to a local wedding and they wore green. Besides the ocean thing, I have never heard of anything forbidding green.
