Hi there, yes i would certainly like to visit other places outside the city - when i get the opportunity I will go north. I have heard the beaches there are great. What do you do in Monado?

Sangihe and Pulau Lembeh have nice white sandy beaches... Erm... I would not say that Manado or Bunaken have nice beaches, however we do have absolutely wonderful underwater flora and fauna ! Diving and snorkeling are a must here.
In Manado, I mainly enjoy life... I would not say that I work. Some business here and there;)

Down south, make it to Bira also. Diving there is not bad and beaches are OK. You will find a few fellow "Bule" who settle there.

Used to know Makassar well. Bantingmurung is great as one poster already written here. Then Barombong is a seaside I remember to be fun to walk as a little girl then, as the sea was sand all the way and not deep at all for some distance away off its beach.
Then there's Pulau Selayar. At that time it took 7 hrs ride by boat to reach. Don't know now but its produce was these juiciests big oranges that I wonder why it's never been tapped as Indonesia's oranges.
Enjoy the journey of discovery on this part of Indonesia.

thankyou so much for your helpful ideas about where to go. I do enjoy swimming so the waterfalls sound great. I do love the beach also and will go to Bira at some stage. You mention lovely oranges, i am so surprised that so far it seems difficult to buy FRESH real orange juice instead of the sweetened variety ... Even when i have asked for it to be freshly sqeezed, they also add water and some sweetener!!

I wonder so myself, yet I'm Indonesian. I even doubt whether I did see and have these oranges because it's never been mentioned anywhere. Could you do me a favour by asking the locals about this island if it still exists and that they ahve these lovely oranges. I need validification (is that a word?)...
I remember my parents used to buy mangos too in huge rice sacks from the kampungs.
Thanks! :)

OMG, Atlantis!! You cracked me up!! If only people could understand and get what Atlantis writes in Menadonese. Atlantis is wonderful with his sense of humour, yet, he's French!!

Makassarmaxi, take a note. This man speaks Menadonese dialect better than a Menadonese...:):)

Makassar is my town although I am only there for three months of the year. I have my house in the Tello district about 7 KM outside town. Ask me what you want to know and I will do my best to help.

My wife and I "may" be moving to Makassar later this year. Used to live outside of Jkt in the 1990's for 8 years and know Makassar is a bit slower and smaller than other places we've lived including the Middle East.

A bit worried about what there will be for her to do in Makassar to keep busy. She's always been part of the international women's associations, etc. to keep her focus. Me, I just work so I'm okay.

I note there are the Hash House Harriers in Makassar and we joined them in Abu Dhabi while there. Just we don't drink enough beer to make it worth the while I suppose.

Any ideas on the social fabric for expats in Makassar? We're not going to be isolated from local friends as we've made many in our travels, but it is nice to also have someone of your own culture to be around some of the time.

There are plenty of Expats in Makassar and if you want that kind of social scene then the hash is a good plce to start. Hashing is not about drinking beer (although some do) it is a bout a social gathering.

It meets or did last time I looked on fridays at the Kios Menteng right on the sea front. Once there and meeting people you will get to know others. It is not a small town (it has over 1 million population) but it not expat orientated like Jakarta.

Having said that I live there as my second home and I like it. It also is the gateway to the east of Indonesia and to one of my favourite places Tanah Toraja. Good luck to you.

PM me closer to the time you come and I will help you if I am there.
