I'm escaping from Bandung next week (Nov 7-10) to visit Yogyakarta. Mainly just getting out of Dodge for a few days. If there are any members who want to meet for a beer, drop me a pm.
Watch out for Al Grey. I understand he's a naughty boy.

Visit Kaliurang and the museum.
Solo, IMO, is a nicer place.
I have only seen a little of Solo but I understand it's a nice place to visit.
3 days in Jogja won't give you time to travel anywhere else.
I'm a boring old sod and love military museums. There are a couple of good ones out there especially the fantastic aircraft museum but I suspect that's more for other readers that yourself.
The cleanest public toilets are all in western style shopping centres. :)
see Kasongan handicraft in Bantul
I am told that Yogyakarta could be a very nice place to retire in. Anyone got any comments on this idea? Thank you. :D

I would go with that. Lots of things to keep you busy and easy travel and shopping. Also lots of bule food if you want a taste of home.

That's right. It's a peacefull place, no bomb, no riot so far. Maybe the life threat only comes from active Merapi mountain and earthquake.

You forgot to mention the Gold robberies where the owners were murdered, possibly related to funding terrorist activities, the terrorist arms stashes found not too long ago, the Nuclear reactor, tho small but potentially still a massive problem if maintenance is typical of Indonesia and of course the infamous Becak drivers of Malioboro...
Hmmm, thank you all, I will keep it in mind for when the time comes. :)

Have I mentioned that Solo has everything that Yogya has, except for the Malioboro becak and andong touts, tourist crowds and the college kid mobs?
The bacak are handy.
The touts are 'piles' (A pain in the arse)
Hardly crowds of tourists. Hardly any really.
The kids have never been a problem.
You did forget to mention the last day of the batik art exhibition.
That last day has been going on for at least two and a half years and, I suspect, much longer.

Yes but you didn't mention that certain Aussie Expat who lives there, enough to discourage anyone from visiting...
Fred, you need to visit Yogya in the European holiday season, then you will definitely be crowded out!
Also during the local Indonesian holiday periods Yogya hotels are maxed out with local holidaymakers all driving fancy cars with the prefix B plate...

I lived in Yogya for about 6 years and still have a place there for when I retire.
The students aren't much of a problem because more and more regions are getting their own educational institutions. Yogya is no longer the education centre it once was. The trouble is, while Yogya is great now, so much of the farmland you see a few kilometers from the city has been bought up by people hoping to retire there. Myself included. Give it 15 or 20 years and it will be just another ugly, congested city
You've held onto that place of yours mate, I would love to visit it one day...
