View Full Version : Help! Tell me the real story
Can someone please tell me the real story about cell phones and internet service in Jakarta. My boyfriend keeps telling me that after the earthquake phone lines and internet service are slow. Every time I call his hand phone from the US I get a message, then his ring tone but no answer. How easy is to connect to skype?
Is it that bad?
Sorry to tell you, in Jakarta it is not that bad.
in fact, business as normal.
Unless he is in Sumatra.
Skype is deadeasy, use it everyday.
Thanks Kingwilly! Do you have enough speed to use your webcam? does it matter what type of isp service you have?:smile2:
yes, i do, sometimes webcam video is too much load, but just pictures without sound is fine,
I know my parents try to call my XL number and can never get through.
They used to be able to on other networks.
We use skype but the slower connections here in the countryside makes it poor audio only.

Sounds like the boy friend is the problem. Get a new one and the internet service will likely be greatly improved.

Agreed. Bandwidth here in Indonesia is sufficient for one voice and video connection, but if you're boyfriend is talking and doing video with several girls at the same time, all bets are off...
I once came as a single here. Amazingly I bet that most, if not all, of the people who have answered this thread came as single and got married here.
Never let your boyfriend come alone here...
Her b/f might be Indonesian...
Her b/f might be Indonesian...
He might be indeed.
Not harder for him to find someone if he is Indonesian since he speaks the linguo. Girls are not that rare in Jakarta and long distance relationship are a killer when you live in this kind of huge cities.
Just my 2 cents.
All you guys have such suspicious minds...possibly for good reason.
To be fair though, comms in Indonesia is pretty bad sometimes. Yes, there was some issues in the last few weeks with internet in Jakarta. I experienced a slower than usual speed and put it down to the power station fire.
Also, I have telkomsel post paid sim and even though that is supposed to be the best, I still have trouble calling people and they have trouble calling me.
Sometimes things just don't work very well here.
Having said all that, if your b/f is a player, you better be worried because there are plenty of ladies in Jakarta.

ahahahha ... i am pretty sure he has another girlfriend in here ...
not that bad really .. slow just the day when the earthquake happened ...
it was hard for me to call my friend in Padang when the earthquake happened in Padang, it was also hard for me when i called my parent in Bandung when I was on the sea watching there was an earthquake in Bandung, and all the friends a little hard to call me when they try to reach me in Jakarta when the earthquake in Jakarta happened ...
but it is just only few hours ... not that long really .. :d
well to be honest, the connection can be pretty bad sometimes
well.. it depends in what area is his boyfriend and what connection is he using.
For example, the FastNet (First Media) connection in my office (Kemang) is quite okay, while in my Mom's house (Jakarta Timur, almost at the borderline between Jakarta and Bekasi), she subscribes to the same package we have but the connection is not as good as my office.
And maybeeeeeeeee he is using the 3G modem thingy, which is hopeless for browsing, let alone webcam. I tried several providers, before I finally landed on NetZap (which is pretty fast) and they all are just the same. And I was using it at my house in Bendungan Hilir which is next to Sudirman and the signal is very good.
Same goes with cell phone. Especially if he lives in 3 or 4 storey building like kost-kostan where phone signal can be a problem sometimes :)
BUT
I don't know about 'after the earthquake' because if he still lives at the same place, I don't think there is a significant change on the connection :)
Thanks everyone! It is very hard to keep a LDR, after what I heard from some of you it might be impossible to keep one if you stay in Jakarta.

She should have a few ounces more sense...

If you have been in relationship long enough, you'll know his character, if he can be trusted, you have nothing to worried about, just focus what you are doing now.

If you don't believe him enough, and he hasn't tried to make an effort to reach you or keep in touch with you, don't waste your time waiting for him. It's not worth it keeping him as your boyfriend.

I hope it's true, because of internet connection, he couldn't reach as often as you expected at the moment or he might stay somewhere in remote area or helping earthquake victims in Padang. It sounds very positive thinking, doesn't it ....

Hi mmcup...
looking to ur heart..
Takes bit time for reflection. If man really loves woman, he'll do everything.
I agreed with Tantori...
Only u know ur bf's character. Is he the right man who worthy to be loved by u?
If so, be strong and patient with the condition faced, accept him as what he is. Talk with him about ur honest feeling.
But if he isn't the right man...just let him go. There is time for everything.
Don't worry as women, we are precious as a pearl...also our love. One day u will meet ur real love...:smile2:
Take Care

hmmmmmmmm, interesting username. Is your breast size really a Double M Cup ?
I guess that's a "No" then Willy...
hmmmm, one can live in hope....
I think there is some problem for sure bcs when my family calls me from abroad it appears indonesian number always!
This isn't due to a problem. it is due, I believe, to operators agreements and the way they handle the calls in between them. It is not anormal.

To mmcup, you just made my day joking about the slow service after the earthquakes.
It's probably got nothing to do with your boyfriend's attitude as people here like to make it a popular topic.
Truth is, the internet or mobile service has never been good or smooth in Jakarta. It's one of the places on earth where you can get worst service quality at highest pay. They don't hesitate to cut off the line for whatever reason and always give you a "fine" as a punishment if you don't pay on time. Maybe that's the real reason.
Hope you have recovered the hot line with him.
