Hey, guys! My mother-in-law is coming to visit over Christmas and New Year's Eve. We're planning on taking the train from Jakarta to Jogja and then flying from Jogja to Lombok. (Is that a flight that's even possible?...)

The dates aren't completely set yet, but my MIL arrives on the afternoon of the 22nd. I think we'll spend the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th in Jakarta, maybe do a quickie tour of the city on the 24th.

We'll probably head to Jogja on the 25th and spend four nights there-- the 25th, 26th, 27th, and 28th. We'd like to spend one of those nights at Borobudor, probably the night of the 25th. The rest of the nights we'd like to stay in Jogja proper, as close to the action as possible.

After Jogja, we'd like to travel to Lombok and stay there for about five nights, the nights of the 29th, 30th, 31st, 1st, and 2nd.

We're looking for hotel suggestions for the three nights in Jogja proper and the full five nights in Lombok. For Jogja, we're totally open to suggestions. As far as Lombok goes, I think we'd like to be near Kota and as close to the beach as possible. For both places, we either need two seperate hotel rooms or a villa with two rooms. We don't need a five-star resort, but Western-style bathrooms are a must...

Thanks everyone!!!

May I suggest Solo rather than Yogya? Solo has everything Yogya has except for the tourist crowds. In Lombok, I hear the Novotel Kuta Lombok is rather nice...Book now cuz that will be another tourism peak.

We thought about Solo, but my MIL heard about Jogja somewhere and really has her heart set on it. Since she's footing the bill, I think it's going to be hard to change her mind!

We'll look into the Novotel-- we want to get booked soon because I know it's going to be packed. Thanks!

It's Malioboro, despite what you say even the locals here just love a shopping trip to that infamous and over rated strip of rip off merchants.

Don't use the train.
It's always late to start with and it take far longer to get to Yogya than it says. The things are not always clean and the toilets are unpleasant to say the least. The first time I took the train it was 12 hours. Not nice.
If you fail to listen to this advice at least book executive class.

In August I took the train from Jkt to Yogya. I think it took 8.5 hours. Toilets weren't what I would call women friendly.

The Jakarta--Yogya train can cost almost twice the price of a cheap air ticket...There are Yogya--Bali and Bali--Lombok flights...

...and it's bloody freezing in the Exec class, they have the AC on way too high, I would take a cheap and quick flight, {If I was game :} and use the extra time gained enjoying somewhere else other than spending 7/8 hrs on the Jkt/Jogya train,
There are some nice views on the journey but not enough to warrant the downside.
If you do decide on the train, pray that no one needs some extra cash after spending up during the holidays and decides to nick some of the tracks to sell, crazy but it happens, derailments are also quite common...
Selamat libur... :)

I have used the KA exec class and can confirm most of the earlier comments. I have noticed, as well, that often the "express" makes unscheduled stops. Some of my Indonesian friends tell me that the express trains are similar to a micro mini -- for extra cash, they will stop any where you want.

Okay, okay... Maybe we won't take the train! It was my mother-in-law's idea and since she's footing the bill, I was trying to be accommodating! :)

I think we'll fly from Jakarta to Yogyakarta and then Yogyakarta to Denpasar to Lombok. It seems like the best way to go. We've booked one night at the hotel inside Borobudor and five nights at the Novotel on Kuta, but we still need a hotel for the other three nights in Jogja... Any suggestions?...

There's quite a few half-decent western-standardish hotels you and the MILF may like to consider in central Jogja.... Novotel, Ibis (on Malioboro itself, Jayakarta and Quality Hotel(close to the airport), a Hyatt (not sure where,as I've not met a classy enough bird to warrant using that one yet(joke?)), and a whole bunch of others.
There's some websites that offer discounted hotels in most, if not all major Indonesian cities. Off the top of me head....directrooms.com and asiarooms.com, amongst others.
Good luck, slamat libur and enjoy your stay here in "Neverending Asia".

Better fly from JKT to Jogya, only about 1 hour (compared with train 9 hours). Many flights (Lion, Merpati, Mandala, etc) to Lombok start from Surabaya instead from Jogya. The problem is how to reach Surabaya. Consider travelling from Jogya to Surabaya by train/bus (6 hours) or car. In Jogya, common hotels for tourists are around Sosrowijayan (non star hotels next to Malioboro street), IBIS, Garuda, Mutiara (Malioboro), Santika, Novotel, Ambarukmo, Sheraton, etc. In Lombok consider the Senggigi beach with Sheraton hotel located there. Booking in advance for hotel is a MUST for holiday peak season. Have a nice holiday!

Hello mbahdarmo,

I am going to Jogja on 20th October with my family and leave on 25th October. I have already booked Ibis on Malioboro. While there we want to visit at least Borobudur and Prambanan. Do you have a car and driver available to give us a tour at a reasonable price? Do you have organised tours?

Thanks

There are numerous agents around Jalan Sosrowijayan who can organise that for you.
On the next street down, Jalan Dagen, look for a warung called Pak Busros on the left hand side as you enter from Malioboro. Pak Busro is a character who owns his own new vehicle, I think it's a Toyota and he will take you anywhere you want to.
Tell him you know mbak Levi and her bule husband, Om, from Solo and he will likely increase the harga...
The tucker in his warung is cheap and good too, say g'day from me if you meet up with him.

Take the train where?

I think from Gambir station (Jakarta). For train use Argo Lawu, Tatsaka, Bima, Gajayana. Train is good for adventure but it wastes time (9 hours from Jakarta to Jogya).

I aleady looked at that option. Air Asia was cheaper, faster and from what I am told, possibly cleaner (though that is debateable).

I am all for adventure, except when I have three kids and wife in tow for a 9+ hour uncomfortable train ride. I have been told by locals to avoid that trip and also read negative comments on this forum.

Think I'll stick to the "get there quick and maximise my time" option. Just hope the plane doesn't fall out of the sky.

Adventure my big fat Greek behind...
Btw, how come it takes 9 hrs from Jkt to Yogya but only 7hrs from Yogya to Jkt?
Yes, amazingly it is cleaner than the usual run of the mill trains...but I'll say it again and again and... it's bloody freezing!

True it's freezing cold on the train, but wear a sweater, use the bladdy blanket that's provided, and you'll be right.
Besides, taking the train saves arsing around with taxis in Jakarta and Jogja, as both airports are a distance from the city-centres.
If you want a REAL adventure, take the economy train - cheap as chips dong.

Can it beat this harga..

http://booking.airasia.com/skylights/cgi-bin/skylights.cgi

The link wouldn't save correctly but the harga from memory was around 450,000R return...now that's what I call cheap as chips, tho' to be fair my adventure on that train was executive and not economy.
PS, the train stops at Jogya airport now, it has for some time and can easily be used to get to the city, just 5 mins walk from Jalan Malioboro and Sosro.

You can also check for cheapest options quickly on http://www.tiket2.com (http://www.tiket2.com/), it's a new, pretty slick website, they have all popular indo airlines there.

Hi Aguirre,
Please, read our posting guidelines (http://www.expat.or.id/postingguidelines.html).
The Expat Forum is meant to be for community discussion. We understand that there are many companies or private parties that would like to sell their products and services to the expatriates, yet we all get upset if we see a flood of ads messing up interesting discussion threads. Advertising is NOT THE FOCUS of the Expat Forum. Thus, we allow one commercial posting per month from companies or private parties.
I've noticed 5 posts of yours, written the same day, promoting the same link out of 8 posts written so far. I've deleted 4 of them. I can't help but to think that you are part of the management of the website, somehow, even if you post as if you were just a user. Your diligence in promoting this business is a tad suspicious/annoying to me.
Please, refrain from doing it and abide our forum rules.
