View Full Version : Push bikes with a basket!
Is it possible to get around on a push bike in Jakarta...I know the traffic is immense. As i've never been before im finding it hard to picutre the streets ect...India has terrible traffic and push bikes were seen.
Also can you buy push bikes?! I understand i will have a driver, and will just wander around on foot for most of the time so no problem if i can't get one!
(I'm not even sure if i remember how to ride a bike!)
Fair chance it's quicker on a pushbike than in a car but I'm not sure I would do it.
Ruddy dangerous.

Jakarta is a very big city. You may be able to get around in your local area on a push bike for sure but not Jakarta IMHO

Yes loads of push bikes from good Mountain, BMX type bikes, to road racers and a bike with a basket in front also with a 5 or 10 gear derailleur/shimano type gear. I have the latter for local use here but it's easier and quicker to use an ojeck. In Jakarta, you also have the added luxury of Bajaj:smile2: Plus the busway and taxis etc. Wait while you arrive and find out where you are living. All is here for the taking.

You never forget, don't worry, whether you want to remember in Jakarta may be another matter.:smile2:
at least you can ride your bike in jakarta main street twice a month. they have this so called "car free day". jalan sudirman and jalan thamrin will be closed for motor vehicle for half day, i guess. it will be swarmed with many activities, jogging, bike, street perfomance music, etc. been there several time.

With all due respect ninja247, I don't think that is what Twinkle was asking?

Ooh thanks for the reply Davey. You never know i could start a new trend for people riding bikes right across Jakarta!! (I doubt it very much though i'm far too lay!)
I wont be getting one right away, and i would want o experience the public transport too. Just good to know i have the option if i feel active!

No i dont know where yet. I have requested South or Central Jakarta. I'm always daydreaming i don't think i would be safe on a bike there!!
Thanks for the pic :)

well, actually i just want to give her an idea IF she "happen to own" a push bike :bounce:
i dont see it's viable to ride bike on normal day. but IF she "happen to own" one, that might be a good use for fun in car free day.

i dont think you would want to ride a push bike in Jakarta, traffic here is out of this world and the way some people drive, i find it too dangerous... Besides, Jakarta is a huge city... before deciding to get one, i would suggest you experience the traffic here first

Yes of course! I did say i wanted to experience the public transport first. Just wanted to know if it was an option.

Oh trust me on this one..
you DON'T want to experience the public transportation here :)

Why not? Most Indonesians do.
I use public transport here, I accept in can be an experience but I have never had a problem with Ojek, Bajaj, Bis Umum and Angkot etc. and in Jakarta the Bus Way. I have always arrived where I wanted to.:smile2:
In fact it Cities it is sometimes the quickest way to get around. If you chose the right transport, you don't get stuck in Macet:smile2:
Sorry edit, I forgot to add Kereta also, I sometimes use that also from Ekonomi to Eskeutif depending where I going to and from.

I went everywhere in TukTuks in India...is an Ojek similar? I can't wait to arrive. 3 Weeks Friday :plane:
I'm a bit careful of the buses here.
Our little burger bar is on a steep hill. I was wondering why the buses would always pass at snail's pace until one stopped and the cash collector jumped out an stuffed a rock under the wheel. The silly sods have no brakes..

In Jakarta they have the Indian Tuk tuks. An ojek is a motorbike taxi. They are all over the place.

Thats the Bajaj, it is the same vehicle, as Fred says the Ojek is a motorcycle taxi.

I also remember the bicycle taxi in Jakarta Kota. Every moving thing can be used as taxi here :bounce:
If you want to take a Bajaj, (pronounced as Bajai) they park up in certain local areas, like outside Sarina etc for example. I f you want to stop one on the street, just flag him and/or shout Bajai!. He'll pull over.
A word of advice here, always agree your price with both Bajaj and Ojeks in Jakarta before you take them. If you don't like the price nego. If when you first come you can't understand the numbers, the driver will use his fingers, each finger is 1000 Rp.
In practice you will probably find the Bajaj per km are no cheaper than taxis but for short distances a bit nippier and more convenient.
The local bus prices are fixed, not like the UK with fare stages etc. You get on and you pay the fixed price no matter how long or short your journey.
I have never heard of a push bike for adults. Why not buy a bicycle with pedals to make it go? In the US I have only seen push bikes for little kids. I can tell there is a big difference in our cultures.

A push bike is the UK term for a bicycle with pedals. A long time ago when they had a fixed sprocket, ie no gears, if you came to a big hill you couldn't get up, you had to get of and push it.:)
No big difference in culture just usage of the English Language.
Do vehicles not have to pass an inspection to be legal to drive on the road? I wouldn't ride in a car or bus without brakes to stop it. Really a rock under the wheel like Fred Flintstone. I guess 3rd world countries are a lot different. I see why there is a lot more praying.

Davey thanks for the explanation. Can you tell me what the word sod means. I keep seeing it and do not know the meaning of it. I was always told if I want to know something I only have to ask. I want to learn as much as I can. thanks
Sod is a word that depending on it's usage can be in fun or can be very impolite. If Fred calls me a Silly Sod for example I would not take offence.
A long time ago it was very offensive but now not so. It's origins are from the word Sodomy.
Better you don't use it unless you know who you are speaking to and in what context it is being used.
It can also be used to explain a grass divot etc. Thus a grass sod or sod of grass, in which case it is not offensive.
I knew in the US it means grass but it was being used different by Fred. Now I know. thanks again Davey.
Sorry, I should be more specific :)
What I meant was I will not suggest you to take the bus. Taxi, ojek and transjakarta (not busway ;)) is ok. But the bus can be dangerous sometimes. They don't really stop when you want to get off the bus so you have to jump (if you experience this, remember to use your left foot first), pengamen (street singer or what's the correct term of it?) Can be annoying too sometimes. Some of them will not leave you unless you give money, and yes they can be so slow sometimes..

It is called the Busway, even though the buses have Trans Jakarta on them, read the Road Signs and Station Points if you don't believe me:)
It was wrong :) that was common mistake and spreaded all over, unfortunately :( The name of the bus is transjakarta. It's on the bulletin and I happen to know one person who work for the project and he told me that. But if you want to use the busway term, it's fine by me. Who am I to tell you what to do ;)
Oh, btw may I know how often do you take the bus? And what's the route? Just curious :) TIA

OK ask anyone in Jakarta where to get the Trans Jakarta?:confused Ask them where to get the Busway. :)I'm not being pedantic with you, it's pointless. I'll ride the Busway, you ride the Trans Jakarta.:deadhorse:
Oh no.. Neither am I. Really :)
Sorry if you got the wrong impression..

Sorry if you got the wrong impression..
I have sent you a PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TransJakarta
http://jakarta-tourism.go.id/wisatadkiapp/content/en/45/city-buses-and-transjakarta
"The TransJakarta service operates on a special bus-line called the busway."
Although it is called TransJakarta, it is most common for people to refer to it as the Busway or just Busway.
Thanks Pimpin :)
Appreciate that.
