Hello
Flights all booked and as I have a few days to waste in either Singapore or Jakarta.
Still in two minds what to do as I will be with my son 7yrs.
Any ideas of children friendly places in either city's ?

Without too much thought on it, refer to this site

Sentosa is good, and the zoo keeps them amused for a while. I haven't been to the bird park, but have heard that it is OK.
For Jakarta, it depends on where you will be. On the North side of the city, you could go to Ancol, Dunia Fantasy. It's an adventure/play park for kids and adults.
You could also go ice skating, swimming, go-carts, there is a jungle safari in Bogor.
Google "jakarta" and a few other keywords. There is quite a lot that would keep them going for a few days.
Some kids even enjoy spending quality time with thier parents, without having to spend a lot of money. Just go to the hotel pool for a few hours, have a snack and a drink, and just enjoy the time together.:)
Try this blog for things to do in Indonesia for kids (http://indonesia-for-kids.blogspot.com/). Your seven year old will love Kidzania Jakarta (http://indonesia-for-kids.blogspot.com/2009/04/kidzania.html), while you can enoy the shopping!
In Singapore, a 7 year old might like the Singapore Discovery Center, or the Jurong Bird Park. Sentosa Island is also great.
I agree with JalanMalam on the above.
Your son will love Sentosa .. it has a nice if artificial beach , a "Seaworld" type aquarium, Dolphins etc he can ride around on the monorail free after the entrance fee is paid.... and the Musical Magical Fountain go after dark as the laser show on the fountain is brilliant for kids. He'll love it fore sure Even adults do I may say!
The Night Safari at the Zoo is also good for kids. It is a bit false for adults though in my opinion.
If you do decide on Jakarta, Ancol is probably the place as JalanMalam says he will love Dufan, The Seaworld Aquarium there is far better than the one on Sentosa and a lot cheaper.
Taman Safari is very good but a long way out of Jakarta in Cisarua towards Puncak. It'll take you a while to get there from Jakarta, two hours or more.
I think if it were me with a 7 yr old son and only a couple of days I would choose SG. It's small and everything is only "minutes" away not hours no matter where you decide to stay on the island. Indonesia is a far more beautiful and diverse country for sure but in the eyes of a 7 yr old looking for a good time and to be entertained for a few days, JKT compared to SG, perhaps not.
SG is obviously more expensive than JKT but you won't be spending time getting from A to B with your son bored in a car for hours and the entrance to Sentosa is not so much and it has a nice beach. The Magical fountain is a free show, what else you do there depends on your wallet.
Some kids even enjoy spending quality time with thier parents, without having to spend a lot of money. Just go to the hotel pool for a few hours, have a snack and a drink, and just enjoy the time together.:)

Personnaly with a 7 y old, I would go to ancol, eat and possibly stay at hotel Mercure-ancol (or Mc Donald). For a fraction of the price you would pay in Singapore, your little one will have plenty of activities to do !
I love Singapore but for your specific needs, I think you would get a much better value at Jakarta. Furthermore, I like Sentosa but I am not really impressed !
Hello Captain
The plan was to have a few days in Singapore, but after checking
hotel prices etc we have decided we would rather spend the time
in Jakarta now, as it would give us a head start onto Yogya then possibly
Bali.
many thanks again for the information.
Oh one other thing does anybody have a ball park figure of flight cost to Bali from JKT and Yogya

jkt - bali - about $100
Yogya - bali - about $40
I paid Rp$700,000 from Bali to Jakarta one week ago with Garuda. Since the company was paying, I passed on the less convenient Rp$500,000 flights...
