I arrived in Medan from Penang with my Sosbud visa. I want to travel for the next 1-2 months and wanted to end up in Bali by the time my renewal came around and didn't want to have to come back to Medan. So I organized a sponsor who is living in Bali.

Someone mentioned to me that my renewal should be done near immigration at the port on entry, while somone else here said it should be done near my sponsor.

Do you think I am going to have problem renewing it in Bali?

Atlantis will correct me if I am wrong : I think your sponsor need to live in the city where you want to get the extension . And I also think that your sponsor for the extension need to be the same who sponsored you for the visa , except if the sponsor name is not printed in it .

Ok, thanks. That means it shouldn't be a problem as my sponsor's name is on my visa and I will be using him for when I renew. His address is in Bali.

The above info from Marcus is correct.
My sponsor's address is Tangerang (Jakarta) and that is where we go to get extensions.
A couple of months ago we got a new Sosbud in Hong Kong and went directly to Bali, but last week we had to go back to Tangerang to get an extension.

I believe Marcus is correct, it is not an issue from which Port one enters or leaves Indonesia, what is critical is that the Visa extension is applied for in the city the sponsor is registerred as living.

Marcus, Davita and Omdafyd are correct. However, interestingly nothing in the law says that one could not extend a SosBud in Bali with a sponsor from Medan for example, as long as he/she is the person who sponsored your SosBud at the KBRI where one applied for a visa. However, Imigrasi will try to persuade you that one can not do it. The reason is technical. Past 90 days, a foreigner must be registered to the POA section in his KanIm. If any change occure in his address or status the foreigner should report it to the Imigrasi. Let's tke an example: a foreigner spend three month in Medan, then decide to go for a couple of month in Bali. Extending a visa in Bali, while you are registered at the POA section in Medan for example, would be a pain and time consuming for Imigrasi, forcing communication in between the two KanIm... It is much more easy to say that it ain't possible... :D

Thanks for the info, very helpful as always. Off to Padang tomorrow and I will no longer be "inMedan".

I´ve been on SosBuds for a while now. I use an agent to handle all my extensions, leaving my passport in Jakarta with a trusted friend. The only hitch is after two months when you have to report for fingerprinting, but this, too, can be waived for a "fee", leaving you free to roam the country...

So can we call you 'off to Padang' or what? :p

Have a great time and don't forget to post up some of your adventures, if you pass through Solo, give us a call.

M, I'm shocked that you would indulge in such a practice, shame shame shame. :p

I will be trying to keep up with my blog on my adventures and hopefully post some useful stuff in the travel section.

I am pretty sure we will stop through Solo so I will let you know when we get a bit closer.

After 2 months of living in Medan, I came to the conclusion, although its not a bad place to be, there just might just be some nicer places in Indo to live :)
