Hi everyone i am a noob in the forum but i am really a long time lurker. I love this forum very much and gained a lot of very important informations from different member. I hope I can make some useful contribution in the future too. I am Indonesian and live in the UK for several years now but always missing Jakarta. I wonder if anyone can help me with credit card problem. My sister hold a master card issued by Barclays bank UK, she uses it to withdraw cash from atm machine or to buy things for me in Jakarta sometimes. I know it is an expensive way to get cash with credit card but because the amount that she need to withdraw every month is very small it worked out as the cheapest and fastest way to do. Recently she's having problem because most atm machine only works with 6 digit pin numbers instead of 4. Has anyone ever experience this? and do they really have 6 digit pin number now? She did find 2 banks still uses 4 digit but three days ago she tried to withdraw some cash but the machine wont allow it. I tried to find out from Barclays but they haven't got a clue if Jakarta's bank uses 6 digit pin for their card users. If anyone knows which atm machine still uses 4 digit pin please let me know as soon as possible, thanking you in advance.

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

My Indonesian cards work with a 6 digit code, while my european and thai cards work on a 4 digits code. I do not use the non-indonesian one often, not to say rarely, but I never had any problem so far, cashing money at the ATM here... Dunno...

My cards use 4 digits.
Your sister would be better of just going into the Bank and making enquiries or doing a manual transaction.

She just needs to type in the 4 digit pin and press enter.

Yes, most cards here have 6 digit pin and thus, 6 spaces on the screen. Just fill in the first 4 and hit enter.

Wow! You are very nice bunch of people here. Thank you so much for your reply everyone really appreciated it. Just had an sms from my sister she tried with Permata Bank atm and it doesn't work:(. Omdafyd, I did tell her to do the transction manually which she has done before in the past when she need to withdrew a bit larger cash but since last year they turned her around and told her to do it in the machine:confused: Permata bank and Niaga bank is the 2 banks that my sister used in the last 6 months before that she used BCA and BII which she can't now. She did go in the bank last year to find out but they seem cannot give my sister answer that helpful for her. A bit like you went to the doctor and told you have masuk angin or maag:). I think I will try to go to the bank and find out for myself when I am there in July, because this money is needed for my mum which my sisters and i are contributing for her everymonth and I feel awful because my sister had to go all over jakarta to find atm machine that still works for her :(.

Bank Niaga accept our Visa Debit cards for any amounts with a manual withdrawal, we have withdrawn up to 80 Juta from memory in one transaction and there is no charge, however your own financial institution will charge a small amount per transaction and Visa charge 2% on International transactions.
Just be aware that the exchange rate on that day is not the one applied, the exchange rate applicable will be what the rate is when your own financial institution is debited a couple of days later.
Might work out cheaper than the interest charged by the bastard credit card companies.

I go to Bank Niaga each time for higher amount withdrawal (max 3 millions) and always have used 4 digits. More than that go inside the Bank and ask for manual transaction. What I experienced is you can't make multiple withdrawals even if it's from different Banks, in a day. So, make sure to take as much amount you need in one withdrawal.

Hi Littleiyut,

If the card has been issued by a UK bank and is being used in Indonesia it could have been blocked by the bank.
I use a UK debit and credit card and always have to let them know where I plan to use my cards abroad otherwise they get blocked after a couple of transactions. Its a fraud prevention measure to ensure that it is the card holder actually using the card.
Probably best to call the customer service number on the back of the card to check whether everything is ok with it.
Hope this helps.

My wife rarely lets me touch the ATM card so my experience is a bit limited. Our Mandiri card has a 4 digit pin. Mandiri folks get pissed if you come into the branch to withdraw rupiah in cash, and to make the point perfectly clear that they want you to use the ATM to withdraw anything less than a bazillion, they charge you extra at the counter.

So much for customer service!
Bank Niaga apparently has a good reputation for customer service and I have to agree, my wife has been with them for years.

Thanks again to everyone. I just got back from work and rang the customer service and you were right addee, the card has been blocked I forgot about the new policy to let them know where the card will be use:o. My sister had the card for almost 10 years now and it's always work before (always in jakarta) and i never had to give them any notice maybe credit crunch make the card issuer a bit worried. The thing is now I have to ring them every 3 months to let them know the card still in Jakarta. Omdafyd thanks again, although I never took out 80 million from atm or bank in Jakarta, I am not that rich :D. I was a bit worried because she need to pay some hotels and flight for my holiday there later in July but it is sorted now and thanks again very much to you all.
By the way, omdafyd I will be going to Jogya in July for 3 nights and I need to stay near to the centre as you are there do you have any suggestion place to stay? I'm not Black Adder ;) so I can only stay in little losmen as long as it is clean I don't mind. Looking forward to hear from you.

I'm afraid you are a few years too late for me to help with accomodation in Yogya we have moved to Solo but if you visit here give us a call. :)
There was one that wasn't too expensive and just two minutes from Malioboro, I'll ask my partner later for the name.

Sama2, the name of that Losman is the Malioboro Homestay, it is in a very small gang next to the large Batik Hotel between Jln Sosro and Jln Dagen, literally a stones throw from Malioboro..clean enough and wasn't mahal but the bed had a foam mattress which was terrible for me.
There is a great warung makan for Soto etc a little further on.
Anyhow as I'm sure you know there are many more in Jln Sosro or gang satu and gang dua leading off Sosro where most of the backpackers stay, just jalan jalan and have a look. :)

Terimakasih lagi omdafyd. Actually I don't really know Jogja that well, been there once almost 20 years ago:o and I am sure a lot change since then. Last time I went by train from Bandung (booked the losmen from bus station there) but this time I will fly (a lot cheaper;)). Is taxi very easy to get at the airport and ask them to take me to Jln Sosro? Do I need to book before I arrived? Sorry I have been looking around on the internet they don't seem have much information about losmen or homestay. Do you know much about the earthquake recently in Jogja? I read that Jln Prawirotaman has been affected quite badly, and some hotels there actually are closed for refurbishment? Just incase I have to stay in hotel bintang satu :D after you mentioned about the mattress :D (afraid my husband has a bad back).

No problems with taxis directly to Sosro, you can buy a prepid ticket at the small office at the Airport or now you can take the train as they have opened a station at the Airport finally...much cheaper too!
Most backpackers just arrive without pre booking and when we visit there we never pre book either there is usally accomodation available, the only exception is when there are public holidays and Orang Jakarka arrive by the thousands!
In Sosro there are new hotels being constucted in many places, sorry but the last time I stayed in Prawirotaman was back in 1991 so I have no current info for there.:)

This UK card blocking habit is a real pain. I have a number of UK friends who have done all the right things, notified their banks that they are travelling, filled in forms etcetc. Then find themselves stranded in foreign countries, unable to buy air tickets or whatever. Not only credit cards have been blocked, but also debit cards I always advise UK friends to get a cashpassport or similar card that is designed for travel.
