Does anyone know where to get unprocessed bran, for human consumption, ie me ;)
Having wasted my time in several apotik's, Kem Chicks, Carrefour's and several Hero outlets, I have come here to ask.
I know in the land of Oz, it is easy to get, but so far have not seen it, and lacking a Bahasa Indonesian equivalent name, wonder if anyone can help.

A definition for the cheese burger and fries crowd -- Brans: the outer layer of grains (such as wheat or oats) that is removed during milling. Bran is a good source of carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus and fiber. It's found in cereals and baked goods and can be purchased at natural food stores and most supermarkets (except apparently those in Indonesia).
Bran (English) = Bekatul (Indonesian)
Macro has many big bags of grain-like products. Perhaps bran is in one. I will check it out the next time we are at the market and report back. Finally, something to do while istri endlessly compares the qualities and value of various detergent brands among other things.

And I thought that I was the only one that had to suffer this. I is good to know that I am not alone in my frustration over this.
Why do we have to investigate each and every item every time we venture out to buy it. It is still one of lifes mysteries, at least to me..
Thank you for the translation, and I do hope you have some luck in finding it. I will try again myself, armed with the BI word. It was getting frustrating being shown "brain food" ie anything with Omega 3 in it.
Because the products with nice packaging and advertisements may not always the best buy. We have to get the best value for our money because even the small amounts you save from doing this will contribute to general savings. Unless the husbands don't nag about how the wives spend so much money on grocery shopping, then I will just take the one with the nice packaging which will probably be the one that is the most expensive. ;)

Maria, sorry my whining hit a little to close to home. A search for value is all well and good, but week after week, month after month searching the same unchanging supermarket displays seems a bit unproductive.
Now, could you please find this nice gentleman some bran.

No need for apologies, yes it did hit close to home, as my husband is also like that...hehehe...! as for the bran, I'm sorry I cant help but the makro suggestion you have might be the one for him. :-)

Thanks to both of you for the entertaining discussion, although I haven't got my Bran yet, I will try Makro, on the off chance that they have it.
thanks again:)

After the '98 "troubles" ran Wally World out of Indonesia, Makro is the best warehouse style grocery with an extended inventory. I am often surprised to find up-scale imported stuff at 2/3 the price of Ranch or Kemceks -- example: canned tart cherries in water -- great pie filling. Now after spouting off, I probably will not be able to find any bran during the next Makro visit.

Any address to share for a Makro in JKT?
I came back a few days ago with a full trolley from Carrefour, but if I can broaden my choice of products at my next visit in JKT, I would be glad.
Lion Air is kind enough to close the eyes about the weight of my luggages when I a back from Jakarta to Manado.:)
Rice bran is available at any (kampung) rice mill - cost about Rp1,000/kg. Usually bought by the sack for use in animal feeds. As it's straight from the milling machine, it'll need sieving to get rid of bits of husk, etc.

There you go JalanMalam; just saunter down to your local rice mill and get in line with the goat-herds. You can buy a sieve on the way home. I'm still going to check at Makro to satisfy my own curiosity.
Atlantis, the Makro closest to us is at Jl. Lingkar Luar Selatan Kav 6, Ciracas, Jakarta Timur, 13750. The entrance is on the south side of the outer ring road toll between The Rambutan bus terminal and Jl. Raya Bogor. There's a big sign. There are approximately 20 stores in Indonesia including one in Kelapa Gading where I worked in the mid-90's. Then you had to buy a membership like Sam's Club stores in the US, but now any rif-raf can get in by -- as all things in Indonesia -- simply filling out a form.

I now know I need to get out of Jakarta more. Thanks, I will be going to Sukabumi shortly, so may enquire there.
To waarmstrong, I think I already have the seive at home. Else will get the T&S to buy one.:)
You'll have no problem finding small rice mills dotted around rice growing areas of Sukabumi, or elsewhere. These are easily identified by a large cement 'quadrangle' outside they use for sun-drying the raw rice. For rice bran ask for 'dedak'. The price quoted is a little old, but in any event dedak prices are well below those of polished rice.

I finally made it to Makro this morning and the do have rice bran. The only problem is it is still attached to the rice grain, meaning they have unmilled rice in bulk for purchase by weight. So I guess if you are going to buy your bran at Makro, you will need to pick up a rice milling machine, as well as a sieve, on the way home. (Sorry forgot you already have a sieve -- so you are 1/2 there.)

I think it is going to be easier to fly it in... I might just call OZ and get some delivered. I don't want to make it, just want to eat it.:(
But I hope you didn't make a special trip just for little old me.

Every trip to Makro is special; but in this case my wife needed to pick up a bunch of fresh chickens to lop up for the ibu-ibus visiting tomorrow after prayers. While she was poking around the chicken cooler, I checked out the dry grains section.

Hi JalanMalam, you may find the local "bran" from the mills also includes the outer "husk" which is not realy bran as such.
I eat brown rice which is hulled but "unpolished" under the Brand name of "Steamrice"

Before you buy rice bran you may care to look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bran
which has the following comments included:-
"However, some research suggests that there are particularly high levels of inorganic arsenic (a toxin and carcinogen) present in rice bran, and that any health benefits may not be worth the potential detriments. "
I could bring 10 to 15 kg of bran from Australia - see my other post in this forum. "10kg from oz"
