View Full Version : Nuclear Reactors in Central Java?
'Indonesia goes cold on nuclear power

INDONESIAN President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono yesterday backed away from a plan to build a nuclear reactor in one of the world's most seismically active countries.
Dr Yudhoyono said Indonesia would develop existing energy sources and explore renewable alternatives before pursuing the nuclear option.
He announced the decision in response to a question at a stage-managed "town hall meeting" with voters in Central Java, where the nuclear power plant was to have been built.
The event marked the last day of open campaigning before Indonesians vote for almost 12,000 candidates for the national parliament on Thursday.
"In 10 years to come, or 20 years or 30 years to come, Indonesia must really develop its existing resources and these should be environmentally friendly," he said, adding that water and wind power options would also be explored.
"If there are still other alternatives, we will not take nuclear resources."
Analysts such as Professor Richard Tanter from RMIT University had been expecting that Indonesia could move to approve up to four nuclear power plants on the Muria Peninsula in the north of Central Java province once the country's elections had finished this year.
While Dr Yudhoyono, favoured to win a second term as President, did not rule out building a nuclear plant to meet Indonesia's chronic electricity shortfall, he made it clear yesterday it would not happen in the forseeable future. Residents of Java - densely populated, home to many volcanos and prone to earthquakes - have vehemently resisted the idea.'
Political bull or some truth???... personaly I think the idea is F*****g gila!!!.
Yeah, we all know how careful and methodical the Indonesian government is in maintaining and repairing its infrastructure...
Yeah, we all know how careful and methodical the Indonesian government is in maintaining and repairing its infrastructure...
.... and, they reckon the location is the most geologically stable area in Indonesia???
How far does radiation travel, perhaps we should consider moving.
Methinks this thread is too 'heavy' for most of our posters mite :p
If they would build it here, I would for sure move my family before. I love my place, but I have no trust of what it could be under Indonesian government management. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but we have way too many example of how lethal it could be with poor maintenance.
Very worrying indeed, however the below may be of interest:-
For research purposes, experimental nuclear reactors have already been built in Indonesia:
Yogyakarta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yogyakarta), Central Java (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Java). This is the Kartini nuclear research reactor (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kartini_nuclear_research_reactor&action=edit&redlink=1).
Serpong (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Serpong&action=edit&redlink=1) (Banten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banten)).This is the MPR RSG-GA Siwabessy (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MPR_RSG-GA_Siwabessy&action=edit&redlink=1) research reactor.
Bandung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandung), West Java (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Java). This is the Triga Mark II (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Triga_Mark_II&action=edit&redlink=1) nuclear research reactor.

I had read about them before in The Jakarta Post or somewhere. similar. They are small only used to generate a small amount of power but I think for any nuclear pile to operate it must at least contain a critical mass?
I have no idea on what basis they are operated and used.

Time to build Nuclear tight bunkers!!! Any idea on cost?;)

No but cement is cheap and so is the labour..I wonder, given the ability of cockroaches to withstand radiation would it be worthwhile collecting a few million dead ones and lining the walls with them..

My walls already seemed to be internally lined with cockroaches. I should be OK.

Cigarette "ends" ... is that the Australian translation for Cigarette "butts?" I wish my roaches were getting high, but alas I gave that up long ago as well, when I quit smoking tobacco.
Why think of nuclear if there is so much geothermal energy sources already available? Any Icelandic forum member would like to comment?

Don't forget The Lapindo mudflow disaster...
Can you imagine if they got the contract for geothermal energy production..:eek:

I think I need to start to build a cave house like this one ...haha

Maybe this is why Iceland is bankrupt whilst Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono went to the G20, no offence either way but food for thought maybe?
Why drill for Lumpur when you can do the same job in an instant?
nuclear...hydro...coal...wind...solar...hydrogen.. .tidal...thermal...agricultural.
All words.
When leadership, from either the great power USA, or next great power China, can extricate themselves from avarice and individual greed, we may see a paradigm shift from the policy declaring 'that which makes most money'.
I believe Capitalism has been degraded by the above, and hope for an interesting and stimulating future where risk capital individual investment/business, and its ability to create wealth from poverty is still available, especially using the technology and science associated with the red words above.

You missed out a possible India but more importantly ... What I have to agree with you on is the "When" bit ... but will that ever happen whilst the Worlds leadership are more concerned about the status of their "Off Shore" bank accounts than the countries they purport to lead?
I love this Hydrogen Power Theory ... The only problem is Hydrogen gas is produced from the electrolysis of water.
Any third rate Chemistry student will tell you that due to the Laws of Thermodynamics this cannot be 100% efficient, so where do we get the power/enegy to procuce it?
Perhaps by destroying Primary Rain Forest, to make room for Palm Oil Plantations to provide the Bio-Diesel to provide the necessary electricity and then convert it inefficiently into hydrogen gas to make us all feel good and green?

My type of post kud. Well said sir. The Greenwash around is sickening. If more people spent a little time on wiki, rather than believing the turd they are fed by the media, we may make a little progress.

My list of self replenishing energy choices indonesia has:
1. 1500W Household Solar Cells (should be cheap to produce/subsidised)
2. Hydro Tide Power (Similar to wind but using the tidal currents)
3. Wind Energy
It's all out there for the taking since the beginning of time..
But as previously posted, people tend to look at easier, immediate, profitable solutions..
Governments need to realise that "infrastructure" is not a profit-center, but the cost of development..;)
simarkbotak ... please ... nothing is self replenising if it is subsidised IMO

Thank you Cirebloke a lot of the so-called "greens" have no idea their mentors' solutions are carbon plus and not of an ecologically sound basis.
Even the air I breathe is not free ... because I must consume food (hence energy) in order to have the muscle power to inhale it?
Entropy will preavail in spite of our endeavours to stop it I'm afraid.

I was referring to the energy source..;) I couldn't find a word for the actual source not being used up..
Kinetic energy, solar energy.
i think you'll find it's called renewable.

i think you'll find it's called renewable.
Well, technically you aren't even using up any "matter" to renew..;)
Can we agree on infinite as opposed to finite..
Nothing is infinite for us on Earth... only infinity itself... even the Sun will be "used up" one day. The best we can do is use our resources wisely to make them last as long as possible.
All energy sources are used up to create unusable heat.
No work is 100% efficient otherwise perpetual motion would be an absolute gift

I’m not saying we shouldn’t look at and use alternative power sources but just that we make sure they are realistic and don’t leave a bigger “carbon footprint” than we already make, ... and not listen to the bullshit political propaganda of such.
Bio-Deisel is an excellent example of such. It was originally developed to use waste cooking oil rather than throw it away.... Now it’s production destroys Primary Rain forest like nothing we have ever seen before in SEA. .... 70% of the Primary Rain forest is to be destroyed in Sarawak by the authority of the Malaysian Govt to make way for Palm Oil Plantations to provide Bio-Diesel for the so called “Greens” to fuel their cars.
The Primary Rain Forest in Sumatera is being destroyed for the same reason. When you buy Bio-Diesel you are helping to make the Orang Utans and Sumatran Tiger extinct there.
Let’s hope Indonesia does not continue to do the same and sees some sense. Do we really know the actual cost and payback in Carbon (not dollars) on these “renewable” energy projects?
There is nothing for free on this planet, everything has a price. Let’s hope the ultimate victim for our greed is not the Planet itself.
Saying all that we can in real terms only we can only prolong the inevitable for as long as possible in real terms .... but let’s do that properly if we can rather than accelerate it for sure.
When you buy Bio-Diesel you are helping to make the Orang Utans and Sumatran Tiger extinct there.
Are you suggesting a tread mill energy plant where Orang Utans are running on the machines and the tigers are providing security?
Or I have i not understood correctly?
I'm sorry no .... I am definitely not ... please read my post!
I'm suggesting we leave The Primary Rain Forest alone !! Not make a f****ing big short term profit from it by destroying it to create Palm Oil Plantations ... along with the loss Orang Utans and Tigers alone ... We should get our Bio-Diesel by other means ... or forget about the bloody stuff IMO !
Cirebloke ... if you need spectacles please post on the appropiriate forum and I will do all I can to assist!

Since my regrettable affray with a tiger and an orang-utan in the Santika elevator, I sadly, have only one eye kudagila.
Please be so kind as to recommend a monocle-and-patch forum for me dear.
Post it on the request on the correct forum rather than sadly trying to take the piss here please.
for your kind perusal with the one eye you apperently have left

A monacle will be found for sure :):)
Sorry but the eye patch my be somewhat difficult .. depending on how much of your head went along with the said injury ... if you get me?:)
However I know of many good doctors in Indonesia who can surely help your problem. Please post asbelow and we will all help you in your trauma.

Now I have hopefully fixed the next Bionic Brain up with help up can we continue with some sense on this forum please as originally posted by Omafyd's first post?

Couldn't agree with you more, but only add this is impacting other very sensitive areas of the world as well, ie. tropical rainforests in Central and South America. Best (worst) example: Brazil's ethanol production and the destruction of the Amazonian rainforest.
I completely agree with you also my friend, I was drawing attention to SEA and in particular this country ...your comments about South America are true for sure IMO.

It is always amusing to get directed to OP's topic, but still being OOT.
Nuclear Power under Indonesian Administration near where I live, hell yeah, I'd move, Hallo Deutschland! ;)
I fully agree with you but this forum seems full of it IMO .. take a look elsewhere ... we have an OZ posting about sharks fin soup on the VOA thread. I'll leave ASAP if Indonesia build the plant ... but an OZ posting about sharks fin soup on the VOA thread,.. I'm not going to OZ either when I leave for sure !
The Expat chat forum is by definition a place where off topic is not uncommon. His title is: "Expat chat: Just got something to say?"... It does not shock me that a thread sometimes goes here and there, not staying in one track only.
I would appreciate that users who are shocked/offended by a post, report it rather than police it themselves. Wm, Paman or me will deal with it, if it has to be deleted or removed. But please, let us assess it ourself.
In other words, vigilantism is not allowed on this forum.
No rampaging lynch mobs? How dull...
