I think this idea could really work in Indonesia.

The fast-food chain has sent off a letter to the nation's mayors, offering to patch their potholes for free. The company will leave behind a stenciled brand on the patch informing people the road has been "Re-Freshed by KFC."

"In honor of our "Fresh Tastes Best" campaign, we want to come and Re-"Fresh" your roads!" KFC president Roger Eaton says in the letter. "Every patched pothole comes with the Colonel's very own stamp of approval."

Every square centimeter of the public way seems to be plastered with someone's advertisement -- most of it political these days. Pot holes too? Why not! Better than the candidates promises to fix them after the election.

In the face of rampant corruption, ineptitude, incompetence and laziness by the police, perhaps Starbucks should provide law enforcement.

Really, this is a slippery path: the private sector taking over core tasks and responsibilities of the state.

Starbucks would probably do a better job!
As for The private sector taking over State reponsibilities, check out the Rail/Water and Electricity services in most states of Australia, mainly private sector owned and run... services down, jobs lost and prices up!..
the other major concern is 'contractual confidentiality'..try to obtain details on the contracts/payments etc and the same line is quoted..commercial confidentiality or some other name that means the same thing...we can't tell you! :{

I'm no ideologue. I'm ok if the private sector provides better service and lower prices than the state. I am not ok with the private sector monopolizing a service in collusion with its cronies in the state while ripping off consumers.

The 'line' that is always promoted IS that the Private Sector provides a better service with cheaper prices due to increased competition, the reality is as I said, loss of jobs, reduction in services and maintenance and regular hikes in the prices... try travelling in a train in Melbourne Victoria these days!

Since Blackwater has been kicked out of Iraq and now probably looking for work, perhaps Prabowo, or whom ever is elected president, would consider that group of private sector thugs to handle law enforcement here abouts.

I attended Prabowo's meeting this saturday. Went their to hear what he has to say. The guy was in Manado (he is a "putra sulut", originating from Langoan by his mother). I can tell you, he already has the big guys and does not require the services of any Blackwater thugs.

Not surprising that Probowo has his own company of leg-breakers. He is well schooled in certain black arts, having attended US Armed Army Special Forces Training in anti-terrorism (torture) at Fort Benning, and the School of the Americas (advanced torture and kidnapping) at Fort Benning. Still its usually a good back-up plan to have an outside organization to shift the blame onto if deeds become public.
