there is a name for people who torture animals but i wont say it here
Unfortunately it happens a lot here. Cats are considered on par with rats as far as pests go, mostly due to the large amount of street cats around. That, and seemingly most Indonesians don't treat their pets very well in the first place. We've had 2 of our cats poisoned in the last 2 years, both by the same person, who I've spoken to after the 2nd time (informed them that I know they don't like our cats, that I know they do feed our cats from time to time, and that it's odd that the poisoned cats were always found in front of their home, and that any more poisoned cats would lead to an impressive display of angry bule syndrome, including the beating of a lifetime -- before anyone cries macho bullshit, I'm not planning on administering said beating, but if you want to make a point to people, the threat of copious amounts of physical violence does that nicely).
Other than that, 4 of our other cats have flat out vanished into thin air. Strangely enough this happened a few days after some fellow remarked they looked very good, very healthy, very shiny, nice fur, and was wondering if he could buy a few, which we turned down. Fellow hasn't been seen since, so I think those cats ended up being sold.
SO what is the way to deal with the street cats then, shoot them?
I have nothing against pet cats, I have had many, but the street cats just make a mess.
WHy should I have to put up with the constant smell of cat shit outside my house?
Don't they help to keep down the rat population, therefore useful?

The cats around here are so scrawny and sickly (from eating nasi only?) that they quail at the sight of a decent rat.

I've seen rats that are bigger than cats in Jakarta. Most domestic cats aren't spayed/neutered either so they tend to wander around outside the compound looking for a quick shag or two.

We've had to take measures on a couple of occassions against cats that come to our yard, every day, and defecate. This is the sad outcome of no public policy regarding keeping animals in urbanized environments. Your anger should be directed against the authorities that do nothing about this public problem that results in animal suffering, and soiling of public and private areas. The most effective way to ensure the welfare of animals is to insist in proper regulations (and enforcement thereof) regarding the ownership and maintainance in human settlements.
As for keeping the rat population down, that i have not seen. I saw many cats looking in the rubbish, only to see a rat appear, the cat just ran away.

OMG, i can't believe that.....how sick people can be....

Funny...?
Regarding the cat-vs-rat debate, our 4 remaining cats have been responsible for the fact that there are no rats to be seen near our tempat sampah, and no rats anywhere around the house. Donations of dead rats are, however, often made and left in front of the kitchen door. Then again 2 of the 4 cats are absolutely humongous, very lean, very muscular. The other 2 are your average size cat. They actually hunt as a pack, I've seen them do it, and usually if a rat or tikus is dumb enough to show himself, he's on the menu 5 minutes later.
Regarding jim's statement about what to do with street cats: instead of poison, throw a bucket (or cup) of water at them. It'll keep them away for a while. Do it often enough and they will stay outside your gate. There is also the option of taking them to a vet to get neutered or spayed, the option of donating to yayasan that does this, the option of ignoring the cats - poisoning them is not a solution, it's just random cruelty.

Catminator ? I just love cats I wish to take all of them at home. If any of you at Surabaya ever see a guy squatting calling a cat to come out from underneath a car, or chasing cars around, that'd probably me LOL....
Pets are fine, strays just make a problem, and should be dealt with, just like any other vermin.

It was a question, not a statement. I would never poison any animal, rats included. I have many times thrown water at the stray cats. Does not work. They always come back.
As for the negative rep, please read properly.
There is no option of ignoring them, when every morning you walk out of your front door to the lovely aroma of cat shit, all over the only bit of free space you have. They are not clean and carry nasty disease. I have a baby in the house, and the last thing I want is for her to catch something from the dirty cats. I cant remember the name but they can carry one disease that will make you go blind.
Eventually I gave up with the tiny piece of garden, and covered it with sharp stones, the cats dont like that. I do object to the scratches on the car bonnet from them though.

I did, there's ambiguity in your statement, as well as the one above about dealing with it just like any other "vermin". Cats are cats, strays or not.

And that's the price you pay for living here. You think my carport stays clean on it's own accord? I also have a 1.5 year old in the house, but given that there is no way to get stray cats to be a thing of the past, sometimes you have to put in some extra work.

That's relatively easily fixed, open the bonnet. You might find one inside your engine though, I've had that happen once where I started it up, backed out, and a cat came falling out minus a bit of it's tail. This was back in the day when my carport didn't have a canopy so they figured it's dry, comfortable, and *omgwtfhaelp* ....
Anyway. You say I should read what you said, and that you've had cats all your life - all I can say is, you're saying two things at the same time. Your post didn't seem like a question, nor did the "vermin" one above it - so you're not being very clear on things.

I REALLY AGREE with you....
I had a cat once that my boyfriend told me had been run over, but he actually threw it against the wall and killed it. I certainly have a few names for him!
What! he is soo crule!
Pet cats are fine, they are looked after and have all the right injections.
Stray cats are vermin and spread disease. They are just the same as rats only bigger. They do not keep the rats away, most stray cats run away from rats.
You can have the same argument about rats, I used to have pet rats, they were nice pets. Does not mean that I want all there friends running around my house and garden. The same with Rabbits, people keep them as pets, but in the wild, if not controlled then they become a problem.
Cat here are the same, they are out of control and make a problem, they should be dealt with. I still do not agree with poisoning them but there has to be some control.
Maybe MadCat would like to start a charity to rescue all the strays and keep them at his home? Just tell me when you want to come and collect the ones in my area, I will catch them for you ready for collection.

wooowww....
Cats.... I love cats. But stray cats indeed are annoying.
We now have a little garden that used to be the stray cat's playground and litter box. They fought over that little garden of ours. Their midnight choir really drove me crazy. My husband used to have his garden hose ready to spray water at them.
But, we once our beloved Fifi the German Shepherd came to the house after being boarded for three weeks during our moving into the new place, all of a sudden we could restore the peace. Outside the house, that is. Inside, our own cat still once in a while "sings" his frustration about being in the new place.

Free food for Fifi?
Nooo.... Those cats are waaayyy too fast for him even without his lamp shade around his neck. He only made sure he fertilized the whole garden and his scent drove the cats away.
The teckel (dachshund) of the neighbors just killed one of their own cats. Now if you don't know better you would think they are strays but all of them 'belong' to someone. And they are never neutered. Mine don't go outdoors.
Just had a pile of sand ordered for building purposes. Yippee! A new litter box !!

I wish there are some place for dog or cat that don't belong to anyone can be put, so nobody have to poison them to get rid of them......

There is such a thing called animal shelters.
If you really do care about those animals, ADOPT! Don't Buy.

well.. honestly I am a dog person, not a cat person. I grew up with the fact that cats are not nice animal. they steal your food when you dont see it, they scratch your car, they can not guard your house like dogs do, they are very noisy , they poo in any area of my house , even they do not belong to me, they bite my welcome carpet, bite my maid's sandal, and they could not catch any rats running around our house.
but tho i hate cat so much i would never poison them.
my neighbor has 8 cats ( starting with a pair, and later on these 2 cat delivered too many kittens) some of them were born on my roof, at my backyard, they ruined my front yard grass. Usually i spray some water toward them.
i would complained to the owner to take care of their pets or the pet ranger in my compound would be called to take them away.

Here in Lombok, in my part at least, if a cat is run over in the street, the driver must stop and try and find the owner. People get very angry if they don't. I often see kittens wandering across a busy road, while cars and bikes stop for them. Dogs on the other hand, are run over with impunity.
Some pigs are more equal than others...

SO what is the way to deal with the street cats then, shoot them?
Shooting is, obviously, a very barbaric method. If you have owned cats in the past, you would not have even thought of that.
It is not the fault of the stray animals that they keep reproducing themselves following one of the basic instincts (mind you, some people do the same thing and, oh, surprise, cannot do anything about it!).
It is the fault of the community, the people around who are responsible for the ones they have tamed (or not). Therefore, treating strays as pest is not right.
Both of my cats are past strays and they are the most fantastic cats (not the most grateful as cats can't boast this quality, but I simply don't care). They make me a better person, that's all that counts.
What I do with the strays around me is get them neutered. Some shelters/vet clinics do it for free or for a nominal fee. I pay a nominal fee every time 'cause I don't want all the mess around with the endless litters of kittens, cat fights and God knows what else.
If you contact a local shelter, I am sure someone will be able to help you.
