Jolie and myself are organizing a friendly bet for the upcoming European football/soccer championship.

We are here with an exciting breathtaking thrilling..., eh well okay, wager. Everlasting fame could be yours.

THERE ARE TWO PARTS, YOU ARE FREE TO PARTICIPATE IN BOTH*:
1. a 'basic' prediction of winner, runner-up and score of the final
2. a more 'advanced' prediction per game as of the Quarter Finals

*If you don't have time or don't like soccer, but still have a strong preference or opinion on who will become the next European Champion, you can participate in part 1 only.

Winning the first prediction will get you the title of 'Ahli Sepak Bola'.
Winning the second prediction will make you 'Pristine Football Expert'.
Winning both is (almost) impossible.

In the next post, Jolie explains the Advanced Prediction. For the basic prediction, just enter the two teams and the final score (after overtime, penalties etc.).

E.g.: England (2) - France (1)

Deadline is Thursday, 21 June 2012. After that, no new entries allowed!!!

These are the teams:

Croatia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatia_national_football_team)
Czech Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Republic_national_football_team)
Denmark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark_national_football_team)
England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_national_football_team)
France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France_national_football_team)
Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany_national_football_team)
Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greece_national_football_team)
Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy_national_football_team)

Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_national_football_team)
Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland_national_football_team) (co-hosts)
Portugal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal_national_football_team)
Republic of Ireland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Ireland_national_football_team)
Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia_national_football_team)
Spain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain_national_football_team) (defending champions)
Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden_national_football_team)
Ukraine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine_national_football_team) (co-hosts)

Okay, let's set the ground rules first:

1. One member can only submit one set of picks
2. Once submitted, s/he is not allowed to edit it anymore.
3. As the kickoff is on the 8th, Jstar (oh the pressure! hahaha) suggested that we start the poll from the quarter finals forward to give those interested to join plenty of time to submit their picks.
4. At first I thought that we would only pick the winner of each match from quarter finals on. But Jstar suggested we also give prediction for the score of each game for tiebreakers: the closest prediction to the actual score wins.
5. THE PRIZE: Bragging right.

For Example:

Prediction of Quarter Finals Match:
1. Czech vs. the Netherlands: the Netherlands (2-1)
2. Poland vs. Germany: Germany (3-1)
3. Spain vs. England: England (2-0) <--- hahaha
4. Italy vs. France: France (2-1)

There will be two days break before the semi finals, so we will submit our second set of picks:

1. Winner of SF (Semi Final)#1 Vs. Winner of SF#3
2. Winner of SF#2 vs. Winner of SF. 4

Another two days break before the final.

Then we will tally up who got the most right picks. The one who predict closest score of the final match wins it all.

PS: Ideas and suggestion please...

Here are the schedule of the match:

Friday 8 June 2012
#1: POLAND vs. GREECE
#2: RUSSIA vs CZECH

After several furious PM back and forth with Jstar and John Madden (okay, not furious PM...I'm just exaggerating...it's the adrenaline lol), I suggest that we close the poll on the 20 June 2012. That way, we all know who are the winners and runner-ups of each group (for the advanced poll).

Finals will be Spain Vs. Germany, and Germany will win 2-1... i hope :)

Okay, so you enter your pick for the basic poll. And it's already locked. Thanks Losthero!

This is how good I am at TV and football...
Went out shopping and as a special treat for all their recent hard work I bought in a case of beers for the boys, plus England shirts... plus a bottle of voddy for me - to get me thru the next month with some sanity intact... cooked dinner, took a shot of voddy, sat down to watch the match... woke 4 hours later. PERFECT!
However - I predict that Poland will make it as far as the quarters or semis... because I am a cynic and I am sure there are (or have been) some sweeteners passing hands behind the scenes.

Enjoy your footie guys xxx

After day 1 we have a new outsider, Russia. The (Dutch of course) toptrainer Dick Advocaat who abandoned the Belgian team for the big bucks, has done quite a good job, they beat Czech with 4-1 after the draw between Poland and Greece:

Group A
1. RUSSIA 3p
2. POLAND 1p
3. GREECE 1p
4. CZECH 0p

Tonight we will get fireworks in Group B with Netherlands-Denmark and Germany-Portugal...

After day 2 the results in Group B are known. The Dutch lost from Denmark, quite an attractive game. But if you can't score out of 28 attempts at the goal, you probably don't deserve to win. Denmark had 8 attempts btw. The Dutch still need to learn it's the result that is important, not the attractive football. Unattractive football, that brings us to Germany. In a boring game and with luck in the final phase, the Mannschaft (Nationalelf) pulled it off again. No news under the sun.

Group B
1. DENMARK 3p
2. GERMANY 3p
3. NETHERLANDS 0p
4. PORTUGAL 0p

Tonight it will get interesting in Group C with Spain-Italy and Ireland-Croatia. I expect some old fashioned 'catenaccio' from the Azuri against the world champion. For those unfamiliar with that word; it's a style invented in Italy where you defend, defend, and...defend. With a counter once in a while.

Spain and Italy have good defences so for a group starter, gotta be a goalless draw. Ireland are party poopers and might steal a 1.0 victory over Croatia.

As for the final, take your pick v Germany but I am patriotic and I am going to stick with England. Final score. 1.1 after 90 minutes and a penalty shootout after extra time!

Wow...it has been a very interesting weekend.

Group C:

1. Croatia 3 point (Won vs. Ireland 3-1)
2. Italy 1 point (Draw with Spain 1-1)
4. Spain 1 point (Draw with Italy 1-1)
5. Ireland 0 point (Lost vs. Croatia 1-3)

Spain will win (I hope) 2-1. I hate catenaccio, it's boring.

I always think that Spain is no match for Italy skill wise, but Italy has that oomph, the drive to fight in international championship.

What we should also cross-reference is how to see the re-runs of the games we missed. I do not have cable TV and rely on RCTI and MNCTV but I am finding it a struggle to watch one whole game as they kick off at 11pm and 1.45am, i fall asleep and watch patches of the games. Daytime I am out and about but when are the re-runs anyway? I cannot work it out.

All set for England v France tonight, will stay awake for this one, I remember World Cup and Bryan Robson 3.1 but also losing to France 2.1. Staying with England and a 2.1 victory tonight.

Ukraine v Sweden will surely be a home victory 1.0.

Ireland in group C can still turn the corner v Spain and Italy, Trattatoni certainly believes so.

In Group D, England and France played 1-1. It was quite a boring second half. Still, a good result for England without Lampard, Rooney, Barry and Cahill. The Manchester City players excelled at both sides, we did not see Ribéry a lot but les Bleus can say they have not been beaten for 22 games in a row. So far, the four favorites (Spain, Germany, Netherlands and France) did not really deliver. Ukraine beat Sweden.

Group D
1. Ukraine 3p
2. England 1p
3. France 1p
4. Sweden 0p

Tonight we will return to Group A with Greece-Czech and Poland-Russia. Let's see if the Russian result was a fluke. The Russian supporters are quite active, there are many hooligans around. Add that to the not always so positive historical ties between the two countries and we understand why there's a lot of tension.

It was quite a bore fest at second half. But pleasantly surprised to see how well the French players played. I won't say Spain and Germany did not deliver. Spain did play Italy, and Germany is in the same group with the Netherlands and Portugal (blood fest?). I did expect more from the Netherlands though.

Germany needed some morale uplifting after three disappointing matches (lost against the Swiss and the French and only meagerly beat Israel) so I'm pleased that they won over the Portuguese after all, anyway it looks like Lukas Podolski was there because of his scoring record rather than his performance, during the last two years he's squandered too many goaling opportunities, Andre Schurrle should've replaced him. The Dutch could've won by a big margin to Denmark but they squandered it. I found it rather disappointing for the Spaniards to only hold Italy to a draw since they deserved more than that. As for the Ukrainians, I'm surprised Shevchenko could still score a brace at his age (36). :)

So back in group A again with a draw between Poland and Russia. Dzagoev had his moments but Poland played a very good second half. Czech beat Greece with a new record; two goals within the first 7 minutes. Anything can still happen in this group, Greece could even continue if it beats Russia.

Group A
1. Russia 4p
2. Czech 3p
3. Poland 2p
4. Greece 1p

Tonight we will return to group B with Denmark-Portugal and The Netherlands-Germany. Realistically it's all over when they lose but theoretically The Netherlands would still have a chance. Many tickets are offered for sale by disappointed supporters btw. A lot of pressure from press and the general public to have Huntelaar replace Van Persie. And Schweinsteiger expects a 'hard' (violent) game.

Amazing that guy chose for Chelsea. Ok, they did win the CL (with anti football) and unlike Lukaku, they probably will let him play (40 million Euro you don't put on the bench). But still, turning down Real or Barça?

Probably still better than how Barca wasted Ibra and Madrid splurged like 20 million on Fabio Coentrao only to satisfy Mou's rotational mood. Except for maybe Angel di Maria and the product of Barca academy, La Liga appears to be not so friendly on youngster development.

In Group C, Spain finally showed what it's worth. Adding Torres was a good move (even a child could see they could never play Barcelona football without someone in Messi's role). Of course the opponent was Ireland so we'll have to see if it also works against stronger teams. Croatia will be a good test. Great supporter base from Ireland btw. Croatia-Italy was 1-1, nothing is lost for the Azuri.

Talking about the youngster development; did you read about the big 'star in spé' from Anderlecht? They let him go (with his two brothers in a package deal) to Chelsea.

Sometimes it is quite interesting to look at the faces and into the eyes of the players as they are lined up to sing the National Anthem. No doubt the Dutch were scared and lacking the final edge needed to overcome the disciplined and masterly Germans. Some sing, some do not. The methodology is interesting, also as they pander to each other in the tunnel before coming out, you can see the nerves!

Spain got down to business last night in Barcelona style and the Irish never had a sniff from the first whistle. Credit to their industry though with a squad of players, Keane apart, who just don't cut it at top level. Spain and Croatia should spare the spoils and Italy would have to beat Ireland by more than Croatia did. Not impossible but ....

Andy Carroll should make a difference tonight for England but so should Ibra for Sweden. I am fearful of another draw and hopeful of a narrow victory. Ukraine v France could go any which way but a scoring draw is likely.

Still bothered about the re-runs. Getting kip in before 11pm and breakfasting at half time (midnight) to stay awake before taking on the 1.45 am game, sleep again 3.30pm or so. Problems ahead with the knock out stages and extra time and penalties!

C'mon England ! I have the new shirt and i will be wearing it with pride tonight, as usual i will be thinking are we good enough mentally as we have bottled over the past two decades in major competions and at times we haven't even managed to put two passes together in some of the games played.
If we can beat sweden (by the odd goal) it will be great to see Rooney (Shrek) back for the next game against Ukraine, i am hoping that the rest Rooney (Shrek) has had will make a difference if we go further on in the competion.

Weird start of the game between France and Ukrain: first an incident between Tymoschuk and his teammate at Bayern München, Ribéry. And then during the Marseillaise the thunderstorms started. Ribery snapped at just everybody, even at his own team! He even had a fought with Robben, didn't he? As for between him and Tymoschuk, it didn't look like a fight for me.

One probable problem with the England national team that they could concede some goals: everybody understands them, yet they understand nobody! But in any case, don't cry for me, Suedia..... :p

How can the four teams in Group B qualify tonight? Some background info...

Germany leads with 6 points, followed by Portugal and Denmark (3 points) and Netherlands (0 points).

Denmark plays Germany and Portugal plays The Netherlands.

Germany qualifies:
- If it does not lose from Denmark
- If it loses from Denmark and Portugal does not win
- If it loses from Denmark with a goal difference (but scored twice) and when Portugal wins

Denmark goes through:
- If it wins from Germany
- In case of a draw and Portugal loses

Portugal qualifies itself:
- If it wins from the Netherlands and Denmark does not win
- If it wins from the Netherlands and Germany loses 1-0, 2-1 or with at least two goals difference
- If there is a draw and Denmark does not win
- If it loses by a goal difference and Denmark loses

Netherlands will qualify:
- If it wins from Portugal by two goals difference and Denmark loses

I had a hunch about Greece and they did it against the disappointing Russians.

On a point of order though, I thought Russia would still qualify rather than Greece because they had a better difference. Decided on their 'head to head' last night.

So what of the same scenario for Holland v Portugal tonight if they both have 3 points and Germany beat Denmark? Why should Holland have to win by more than one goal? I acknowledge Denmark also have 3 points. Slightly confused on the interpretation of the rules here.

I used to have the same question, and I found that UEFA has already formulated pretty clear tie-breaking rules about this (http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/competitions/Regulations/91/48/36/914836_DOWNLOAD.pdf) (point 8.07 under Competition System):

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more
than two teams finish equal on points);
c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
more than two teams finish equal on points);
d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
paragraph 1.2.2);
g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
h) drawing of lots.

With such complex filtering system, I'd be shocked if they exercised point h. I've been observing European football for quite a while and have never found anything beyond point e being applied. Even the application of point e itself has been very rare.

So Christiano Ronaldo did a 'Maradona/Pele/Cruijff/...'. I.e.: put your team on a much higher level by exceptional individual class. And the Dutch failed in this tournament, it looks like a burn-out. Many thought Germany and Denmark would have made some kind of deal but it was a fair game and Germany won after all.

Since Italy will most likely beat Ireland, Spain and Croatia both can not afford to lose. If it's a draw, Croatia and Italy both need to be nervous.

Danish players defending the goal made me wanna bang my head *frusty icon here* :frusty: I turned out to be wrong on that onslaught I had said earlier. In any case even Loew himself seemed to be surprised with the 100% outcome for Germany since it belongs to, in his own words, an extremely tough group. Now that it will face Greece in quarter final, it seems like it will be wise to refresh the squad by putting in the subs like Goetze, Schuerrle, Mertesacker, Kroos and.... Klose. Looks like the main squad has been exhausted; Gomez was ineffective and it was quite of a luck that Podolski could score on his 100th match last night. The subs that I mentioned above aren't bad anyway; Schuerrle has scored 7 times in 15 matches, most of which from him coming out of the bench, Goetze has scored against Brazil and Austria, Mertesacker is the most experienced defender of Germany in the tournament, Kroos could connect the defence and attack, whereas Klose.... well, is an unused legend. I'm still not sure if Reus can replace Oezil's role though even though he does have the skill, but rather than a playmaker he looks more of a second striker type. Anyway credit for Lars Bender, must have been a good evening for him.

As for the Danish side, I'm impressed with the black Poulsen, was it Simon? Forgot which one, there were three Poulsens on the pitch. He was so speedy on the left side. I would rather fear him than the scorer Krohn-Dehli and the ace Bendtner, let alone the so-called rising star Christian Eriksen, who got cut numerous times by Khedira and Schweini.

Well, Klose scored more for Lazio then he did for Bayern those last years. For me Mertesacker & Kroos are definitely top, anyone playing for Arsenal or Bayern is. But try to replace Schweini.

The real toppers in every country had quite a heavy schedule playing for their clubs of course. And after a season with CL or UEFA CUP games it is only normal the fatigue takes its toll.

So obviously Spain and Italy did qualify.

Tonight the last games in group D:

England - Ukrain
Sweden - France

THURSDAY: THE VOTES NEED TO BE IN TONIGHT !!!!!

jstar

Amazing how the French team was able to screw themselves by losing from Sweden. Now they face Spain; it doesn't look good. England played solid and did what was expected. They were lucky the assistant ref screwed up (it was a goal).

THE PREDICTIONS NEED TO BE IN BEFORE QF !!!!!

jstar
20-06-12, 08:26
BET DESCRIPTION
Deadline is Thursday, 21 June 2012. After that, no new entries allowed!!!

1. BASIC PREDICTION

For the basic prediction, just enter the two teams and the final score (after overtime, penalties etc.).
E.g.: England (2) - Spain (1)

So be "smart" about this. As you can see in the schedule, some combinations are simply not possible. I will give some 'finals' that can NEVER happen:
1. the current quarter finals (it's a knock-out system).
2. Portugal-Spain
3. Germany-Italy
4. Germany-England

9860

For more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2012#Knockout_phase

2. ADVANCED PREDICTION

For every correct win you will get 1 point. For every correct score (per team) one point extra. So a maximum of three points per game. The person closest to a perfect score of 21, wins.

As an example:
I say Spain-France will be 2-1 but the end result of this game is 3-1. This gives me two points.

Underneath I will give my prediction. Then you can copy and change (so we keep a similar format).

Do you think anybody can survive the advanced prediction???

Anyway, disappointed with the French last night. Cabaye should've played, they didn't have a good ball supply without him. Of course great credit to Ibra.

jstar
20-06-12, 13:18
Do you think anybody can survive the advanced prediction???

Well, I went a little bit overboard in my predictions to make some points, e.g.: the basic prediction will be more of a 'gut feeling' bet; it is okay to have a different basic and advanced prediction; we do include overtime and penalties in the scores.

Yeah, it would be funny if in the advanced prediction nobody correctly forecasts the teams in the final. Or when nobody has more than 4 points.

Well, I hope that Laurent Blanc will solve the huge problem we have in central defence. At least Mexes is suspended against Spain for having collected two yellow cards. That's the good news.

To have a chance, France will have to play with these players: Lloris-Debuchy-Rami- Koscielny-Clichy-Diara-Cabaye-Ribery-Menez-Giroud-Benzema.

Without Lloris, France would have lost 4-0 against Sweden and it wouldn't have been unfair. Time to wake up and smell the coffee.

This being said I have very little hope that my wish comes true... Spain, Germany and a few other teams have shown a much more exciting football than what the french team has shown so far. It has been very difficult for me to stay awake 90 minutes in front of the TV when Benzema & co ere playing.

What is "Kuda hitam" in English? I'm hoping Czech to be the "kuda hitam".
I'm actually a huge fans of France (maybe because Zidane was in it :)) but they were just so so in their last game. So I predict Spain will win.
I never want Italy to be the winner (maybe because Materazzi was in it he he) but I don't know why they are always lucky!

Between Spain and Germany is kinda hard to predict! but... I choose Germany because I loved Jurgen Klinsmann even though he didn't coach the German team anymore but I think he was a good player and made a good change in Germany team when he became a coach.

I've spent the match cursing at the central defence, especially at Mexes who was obviously not to the level of the competition. This and the fact that Nasri should realize that it's not training anymore and that it can be an idea to accelarate the game so that spectators like me do not fall asleep in front of the TV screen. He may find out that it's a good idea and that it's the way to score...

Spain had the match under control, but it was definitely not their best one so far. Fabregas and Torres really disappointed.

Except for Cabaye and Lloris, the French team did not play well either. Benzema (again), M'Vila and Debuchy failed. And they will meet Spain again in the World Championship in two years. Some heads will roll I guess.

Probably Olivier and EL_G are still in their beds with a hangover, so it's not a good time to ask their feedback. However, O. did predict this during some chat before the game:

I've put my bet on France purely out of nationalism. We, as a team, are not playing in the same league. Even if I hope for a victory against Spain, they should crush us the way the German have dealt with Greece.

Only Sky Garden collects the full 3 points.

Both teams had quite a lot of opportunities but overall Italy was somewhat better, so I guess the win on penalties was deserved. Welbeck disappointed somewhat, Lescott and Terry did a good job stopping Balotelli from scoring. Rooney did not have 'his day' but also Barzagli did a great job keeping him on a leash. Pirlo was an important pivot point in the center and bad boy Balotelli played a good game.

Since the World Championship of 1990, England got involved in penalty shoot-outs for seven times, only in the quarterfinals (1996) against Spain that went well. At the World Championship of 1990, West Germany (semifinals) beat them. Six years later, during the European Championship, England lost again from Germany in the semifinals. At the World Championships of 1998 it went wrong for the third time, this time against Argentina. After that it was Portugal beating England twice after penalties (quarterfinals Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006)

Quite some people collected points on this one (some by single score only), only Snowy city came close to the end result...

Spain

Tonight we will see the first semi-final, between Portugal and Spain.

The difference in playing style between them is remarkably high. Of all participating teams Spain has sent the most passes by far during this tournament (2616). This long-term combination soccer style (tikkie-takkie) is different from the Portuguese style which is much more focused on the counter and less on ball possession. The team of star player Cristiano Ronaldo has so far reached only up to 1164 passes in four Championship matches.

It is therefore a duel between a strong technical collective (Spain) and a physically powerful team, with individual excellence (Portugal). When I glanced over the predictions, I could not see one that favored Portugal. So the scores will determine the winner(s) tonight.

For those who wonder about the logos I used, these are so called association crests: normally a team plays with the logo of the national football association on the left side (position of the heart) on the front of the shirt. In Spain's case, it's different, they use the Coat of Arms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms) on the chest of their jersey. .

Their Football Federation uses this logo:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d2/RFEF_logo.svg/150px-RFEF_logo.svg.png
I understand why they prefer the CoA.

after penalties

The Spanish play their third final in a row. The European and world champion won the penalty shootout against Portugal. It was 0-0 after regular time and the additional extensions. In the penalty shootout both João Moutinho and Bruno Alves of Portugal missed, with only Xabi Alonso of Spain failing. A rather weak semifinal of the Selección.

Appalling and rather boring to see how both teams played only on ball possession (the Spanish tactics btw). Without depth, with a low speed of execution. The mantra was; "Don't swallow a goal". Hoping for a better game tonight in Germany-Italy.

Glenn Crane did best on this one and proves he knows something about football after all (even though he's a fan of Ipswich). Did you ever make it from Paraguay btw? Ännchen was close again.

Tonight the cash of the titans. Germany has won 3 European championships. Although Italy has been very successful in the world cup with 4 titles, they have only won one European championship (in 1968).

So we did see.

Germany (1) - Italy (2)
http://www.hln.be/static/nmc/nmc/livecoverage/soccer/logos/153.png (http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/923/Sport/livecoverage/detail/1461167/DUITSLAND-ITALIE.dhtml)http://www.hln.be/static/nmc/nmc/livecoverage/soccer/logos/161.png (http://www.hln.be/hln/nl/923/Sport/livecoverage/detail/1461167/DUITSLAND-ITALIE.dhtml)

And it was bad boy 'Super Mario' who kicked Italy into the final.

It was a big stunt, Italy beating top favorite Germany. The Italians took the lead thanks to Balotelli who made two goals. After the break a perfect play from the Italians. The penalty of Özil in the extra time came too late. So no revanche for the lost final in 2008 against Spain. For the Italians it is the first final since Euro 2000.

Germany-Italy could also be called Bayern München-Juventus btw. Seven Bayern players in the German team, the Italians had six players of the 'Old Lady'. Both teams had a great track record: Germany won the last fifteen matches, Italy had not lost yet under coach Prandelli.

Wonder who predicted this in our bet?

whatever J ;-)

I didn't see that one coming. Tho I did recognize that Italy always has that extra oomph playing on international stage, I honestly believed that they could not overcome Germany's discipline. But Germany was in disarray. They played confused, it was a lost cause from the get go.

I guess you take it all. I'd better start bowing down to you now before you demand it hahahaha.

Hats off.

Nothing is decided yet though, there is a bit of a flaw in the betting system (from my current perspective of course:tongue:). With two correct teams you only score a single point (if you don't have the scores right but predict the correct win) but with a single correct team and a correct score for that team, you get a point too.

So I checked the 'top four' and looked at their maximum scores:

annchen
9

could end at 10 points

jstar
8

could end with 11 points

kim& mika
8

could end at 9 points

losthero
7

could end up at 8 points

So Ännchen would get 1 point and I could end up with 0 points when Spain beats Italy with 3-2 for instance, even with this 'correct' final. But that's okay, it will be a fair win.

When Spain loses with zero points (like 0-1) from Italy in the final, Ännchen, Kim and yours truly end up ex aequo.

I hate to say this, but yeah, hats off for the Italians too. I'm just wondering what lied in Joachim Loew's head when he put in Kroos on the right side instead of the post regulars like Mueller, Kroos and Goetze. As soon as I saw his name on the post, I had a bad feeling and it turned out to be true: I never saw him roaming the right side, it was Khedira instead. Badstuber too should've been replaced by Mertesacker, he had been terrible since the game against the Greeks. As for Gomez, my feeling was rather fixed as his problem rather lied in the lack of ball supply rather than of skill, even though I had to admit Klose being brought in added some fluidity since the latter is a passer type. But whatever, as the old saying put it, nasi sudah jadi bubur busuk.

Getting ready for the game. It will be very crowded in the bar (but probably it would have been more hectic if Germany would have played the final and if it would have taken place on Saturday night).

Spain can write history tonight by becoming the first to win three major tournaments (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012) in a row. But don't underestimate Italy which surprised by sending top favorite Germany home. La Roja and the Squadra already played before in the group stage, then it was a 1-1 draw.

It seems the UEFA 'manipulated' the broadcast again btw; the German fan crying was in fact recorded before the game and not after the second goal. They have done that multiple times now. Entertainment.

Have a great night...

Manado city center was invaded by a few thousands fans of both Spain and Italy. There was several giant screens all over the city and every cars/motorbikes/trucks was carrying a flag. Well, at half time, quite a few italian fans traded theirs for a spain one.
It was a very pleasant night/morning and I've been watching the game with a couple of friends/users of this forum.

4-0... what an humilitation. I can't remember a euro final ending with a similar result.

Spain are inevitably being compared with the great Hungarian and Brazilian teams of previous decades. Certainly no country has ever won the World Cup or the European Nations Championship by such a huge margin. Well done to Spain and also to Italy for their contribution to an entertaining encounter. We have to sympathize with the Italians to some extent who were clearly very jaded in the second half and then reduced to ten men. Credit to Portugal who were the only country to prevent Spain from scoring a goal in normal play.

Now we can all get back to sleeping patterns, can't we? Lest we not forget Wimbledon Tennis and the London Olympics!

Honduras knock Spain out of Olympic football
By: ThinkSpain , Sunday, July 29, 2012

http://www.thinkspain.com/news/new-ReduceImgWidth.asp?foto=foto21506.jpg&width=250
The big Olympic upset of the day saw Spain knocked out of the group stages of Olympic football competition after losing 1-0 to Honduras tonight.
The two losses suffered by'la rojita' at the hands of Japan and Honduras this weekend have handed Spanish football one of the biggest disappointments of the last few decades and the country's first major failure after four years of almost unrivalled success.
Luis Milla's squad performed considerably better against Honduras than in their debut against Japan on Saturday, with the superb performance of Honduran goalie José Mendoza having a major hand in denying a persistent Spain team on the night.
The Spanish side paid dearly for allowing Jerry Bengtson to squeeze in an early goal and were cruelly denied at least one clear penalty decision, but their inability to put any of their numerous chances on goal past Mendoza ultimately sealed their fate.
The match ended on a sour note with indignant Spanish players jostling the referee after the final whistle had gone.
