View Full Version : Correlation of Religion With Poverty
I wondered what the correlation of religion with poverty was this afternoon and had a bit of look on the interweb to see what I could find. Probably not that surprisingly there does indeed appear to be some relationship between the two. Which country do you think this association is most prevalent? And the winner is http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2010/09/religions-correlation-with-poverty/
Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore that standing in a garage makes you a car. I love your sig, that is so true! Poverty by extension mean uneducated, and when you have masses of uneducated poor people they easily manipulated.
Tangles, I was thinking about this the other day but never got around to checking the internet to see if I was right.
Just remember... Indonesia is the happiest...
The knowledge that the meek shall inherit the earth would probably help to keep you quite chipper.I was tempted to review my inquiry into the correlation between religion and intelligence, but thought better of it.
Is religion one of the causes poverty or does poverty lead to people taking up religion? The idea of a heaven could be very attractive to someone already living in their own personal hell.
Poor people are more inclined to be religious as it gives them a sense of hope or some kind of solace I think as apposed to religion causing poverty, although it is evident that churches manipulate and take a great deal from the poor as well. If you believe in God you would have to say he creates poverty, illness, suffering and everything else that is cruel in the world. If you don't believe in God you will spend an eternity in pain, suffering and torture - but he is a loving God.

He's got a coin slot in his back, every time you put in a dollar his heart lights up and beats for you.
At the same time officially anti-religious states don't necessarily fare better off than those who allow religions to thrive... Look at the Soviet Union.
You could argue China as well I guess.

China... Is poor???Same as here, a small population has most of the money. Surprised, yes?? China does a VERY GOOD JOB of looking better than what it is actually. For example during the Beijing Olympics, Beijing closed off and covered from view any undesirable area so no one can see it. In Shanghai where I lived in preparation for the Expo many old buildings were either torn down OR the sides of the buildings which are visible were painted to look good, from a distance.
Ok here are the facts about China. China has about 150 million people living below the United Nations poverty line of one US dollar a day. Nearly 500 million Chinese people live on less than $2 a day. 99% of China’s poor live in or come from rural areas, according to national statistics, which count migrant workers in cities among the rural, not urban poor. Even if migrant workers are excluded from the rural population, 90% of poverty is still rural. Up to 200 million Chinese workers and peasants suffer from occupational ailments, according to data from the Ministry of Health. China’s middle class is estimated to between 100 million and 150 million people. China has about 55 million middle-class households. In the mid-2000s, China’s top 10 percent of the population controlled 45 percent of the country’s wealth. China now has more billionaires (128 in 2011) than any other country except for the U.S. (412 in 2011). Real estate and manufacturing together make up more than half of China’s wealth creation among the richest. The property market is expected to collapse.

I don't think it is easy to classify who's poor and who's not judging from how much people earn. The same amount of money can be worth more or less in different parts of the world.
Well by what ever definition of poor you want to use the concept of heaven might actually not be as attractive as one might think...
The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry mid term, and an actual answer turned in by a student.Bonus
Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving, which is unlikely.. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct.....
....leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.
'THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+.

Or even sadder the folks who follow that Doomsday preacher (http://edition.cnn.com/2012/03/09/us/california-doomsday-leader/index.html?iref=allsearch).
Haha Yep good old Harold Camping is good for a laugh!
I don't mean to tread on people's beliefs or cause offence, but I hope people would understand these are only beliefs and are not facts. Imagine people fighting, hurting and killing each other over Santa Claus, yes?
Waaaaaa doo! :ohwell:
Those killing for Santa Claus, the Arabic scripture book said to be awarded to somebody who's illiterate, or a particular race sound ordinary to me while not playing down their grossness, but I seriously can't understand those who sell their everything to follow somebody who can't even make a sound forecast, and that even in a country where the Internet was developed.

Well one might excuse overly enthusiastic Christians for following Harold Camping as they are not representative of all Christians.
However, the Mormons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons) or The Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS or as I always called it Ladder Saint Days) is a history which is quite 'interesting', to say the least.
One cannot ignore Scientology for the ultimate in strangeness.
No offence, however I always thought its strange so many religions claiming to be the one true word from God all ask for, and expect money. Why doesn't God provide everything needed? Well that's easily explained by each religion's marketing department why God needs money. So I want to know, who financed the creation of Earth, how much did it cost, and are we still paying for it?
