View Full Version : Dance school in Jakarta
Hi,
My friend is looking for a dance school for kids, in Jakarta.
Would appreciate for a recommendation.
Thanks.
How old are the kids and what kind of dance?

Ow.. they are 9th and 12th years old.
Where is the location? Is it only for latin/salsa dance?

Does it have to be a dance school just for kids or can it be a dance studio that offers kids' classes? Do they understand Bahasa? Which area of Jakarta? 'Cause I could recommend a few different places.
Hi TRJ. Thx for joining.
The whole family doesn't understand bahasa, living in South Jakarta, and their mom is seeking for something like dance class. The kids are studying in an international school in South, but it seemed that their mom wants them to join a dance class too.
Which places you could recommend?

Well, simply speaking, the best dance studios in Jakarta are targeted mainly towards locals and have classes for kids and adults, so those are the ones I'm more familiar with.
At my dance studio (Jessica Stage) I know the instructors speak great English, many of the students speak English as well (they attend some of the numerous national plus schools in the area), and the classes are great (for kids, they have hip hop and jazz) but it's in West Jakarta, close to Taman Anggrek.
Gigi Art of Dance is really good, and it's in South Jakarta in Radio Dalam. My cousin went there for years and danced with them professionally. They have hip hop, jazz, and maybe ballet for kids. I believe the instructors can speak pretty good English as well.
Genecela is a chain like the ones below, but the classes are more varied and a little more focused toward kids and teens. The only studio I know that offers tap for kids, in addition to ballet and hip hop (at their main center in Kedoya, West Jakarta, at least). They have branches in South Jakarta (listed on their websites) but I believe a lot of them are associated with Kids' World sort of places, there's one at Senayan City. I don't know how their instructors would fare with English-speaking students, it would probably vary with each branch and clientele.
Then there's Namarina, Marlupi and Sumber Cipta. These places are mostly ballet, with maybe the occasional jazz classes for kids and teens. I wouldn't recommend them to expats, though.
If you're interested in any of these places, they have websites with addresses and phone numbers and stuff.
If they are looking for latin/salsa dancing, what about private classes for all three (mom and kids)? Please pm me if they are interested.

Wee Advance have classes in Simprug (South) and Kebon Jeruk (West). A Menteng class (Central) is coming soon. And yes, only latin/salsa dance in terms of dancing anyway. They also have Baby Signing Class, teaching babies and parents American Sign Language for communication purposes.

Wauww.... you know a lot. These are amazing. Thanks, TRJ. I'll definitely forward this to them.
Btw, do you teach dance as well? :)

Thanks for sharing, n4t4c4. Your name is unique. :)
The last time I met her, she told me that she prefers something like tap or jazz or ballet. But I'll tell her about this idea.

You're welcome. And no, I don't teach dance. I've been dancing on and off for 20 years, though (mostly ballet, jazz and hip hop... and some ballroom), and I've taken classes all over the place, including here in Jakarta. I know how hard it is to find a dance class/studio that matches your exact needs. Tell them good luck, keep us updated!
There's a lady at the Canadian Women's Asociation who teached Irish dancing if it's of any interest to you. Contact them through http://www.cwajakarta.com/contact/

Meh, I'm not that good, really, I've just been doing it forever. I'm super super out of shape, too, but dancing is really the only form of workout I don't completely hate.

Recently I join a hip hop class in a fitness club. Yesterday the instructor told me that after the a few months I’m now better, fast learner (good memory), but need to improve my expression and more relax. I’m so excited. You’re still dancing right? Where do you usually dance?
Can we loose weight by dancing?

Yeah, I'm still dancing. I just started back up when I moved back to Jakarta since I had no time whatsoever when I was in Chicago. I think I pointed out in one of my earlier posts that I go to a studio in west Jakarta. I'm taking hip hop and (modern) jazz. Recently I've been thinking about taking a class at Namarina, as well, since they offer a more traditional brand of jazz. Can't believe I'm saying this but I miss stricter, more classical classes, I need to brush up on my chaines and pirouettes.
And I don't think you're guaranteed to lose weight by dancing, but you probably can if you do it regularly and seriously (i.e. not just phoning it in). Depending on the type of dance, it can be a really good form of cardio exercise.
So where do you gym? And what kind of routines are you learning (faster, more hard-hitting or softer, sexier hip hop)?
Still, I'm really sure that you are very good in dancing. Wish to see you dance someday. I must be amazed by then. :)
I go to Celebrity Fitness at EX Plaza, Thamrin, and also take hip hop class at Harris hotel. Before, I went here and there to find a gym that has several dance classes. Until I finally found Celebrity Fitness. Dance motivates me to exercise more.
I'm very new in dancing. I love music, especially hip hop, so I take hip hop class and some other similar classes. Last night, my instructor asked me the same question like you. Well, if I know the moves, then I can dance with slow or fast music. However, I am a little bit shy to do some sexy moves.

^I'm not terrible but, trust me, I'm not that amazing.
If you like dancing, why not join a studio? Better yet, why not join the studio I go to? It's in west Jakarta, though... :D
I wish I can. Not only because of the location, but I work Monday thru Friday. :(
Are you going to the gathering on the 18th Feb? maybe you can show us couple of your best moves and teach me. :)

I love dancing since I am young and til now, I still can't help myself if a hear the beat... For your question, the answer is yes" , but you also need to pay attention with your calorie intake or what you are eating.. Calorie intake and burned should be considered in order for you to lost weight...

Why don't try Indonesia Traditional Dances? We are available for this purpose...
From what they told me, they were looking for a studio that has jazz, hiphop, and ballet class for kids/teens. But I heard they have found one. I haven't met them again.Thank you all for the information. :)

Hi everyone...I'm the mom that Deb is trying to help....THANKS DEBS!!!
We live in South Jakarta, and unfortunately all of the suggestions above, as great as they are....don't work. Gigi - she is AMAZING!!! My girls danced there, however, the 9 year old was placed in a class with 18 yr olds and my 12 yr old with 24 yr olds. The classes are great and amazing...but when they're dancing until 9pm on a school night when they have to be up at 5:30 am....it doesn't work.
Genecela - again - amazing! Edmund and Yasinta are wonderful and have tried to make it work for the girls...however, the commute is a problem. After school, 1 way can be up to 1.5 hrs, and it doesn't make any sense to travel that long for a 1 hr class. Edmund conducts his classes in English. I would highly recommend this school to anyone, in the area.
The ballet studios don't offer enough of a program for us. I am looking for approximately 4 classes a week for each of the girls, however, no one can offer more than 2. The other concern is the level of instruction.
My girls have both received scholarships to compete in New York City. They require a level of dance to help them continue their training. I would welcome anyone to provide private lessons at my home as we have set up a dance room for them.
If anyone can be of assistance, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks....
Have you tried asking the instructors at the schools you liked whether they'd be willing to teach private lessons to your kids on your schedule? If they can't themselves, they might recommend you a different instructor that can.
I could ask around my circles, but do you have a price figure in mind for private lessons? I'm asking because good instructors are in demand and would rather teach group classes (more money), so you would have make it worth their time to teach privates during their busy times.

I have asked about instructors, and no one has offered any advice. I have placed the girls in private lessons, and it costs double here compared to Canada. I am more than willing to provide a monthly salary for dance, but I have no one that is willing to step up. I would love to hire someone permanently as a member of my staff, I just need to find them.
I would also invite traditional Balinese teachers as well, the girls would LOVE to learn traditional dancing while we're here. The problem is the level and multiple disciplines. If the teacher concentrated on Ballet, jazz and contemporary, I would be happy. The cleaning up of choreography would be needed as well, and I'm sure that the right person would be able to help with some of the tap sounds...but mainly the execution of the specific choreo.
So if I understood your reply correctly, you're willing to pay, as long as the teacher is good and specializes in ballet, jazz, contemporary. I'll ask around, perhaps someone knows a good teacher with some free time.
