Long time lurker but first time poster :)
Am hoping to retire to Bali inside 4 years but the dream may have taken a small back seat till the economic crisis recovers

Am 50, divorced , no kids, currently live in Perth West Australia but go to Bali about every 6 weeks. Am seriously looking for an Indonesian GF/wife ( haha, makes me sound like I am on a dating site ... ) and have already made use of some of the info from people like Atlantis, Indotom and other regular posters with the wealth of knowledge required for me.
And for those who think I may be a total dreamer I do actually have an Apartment in Kuta and establishing a small business in the motorbike rental field .

Feel free to say hello and if you are cute, single and in Bali sometime...

Cheers
Ken

If you are making regular trips to Bali and already have an apartment, then it should be an easy transition for you to live here on a more permanant basis. It sounds like you are taking the correct steps.

Yep it should be but with the superannuation having just been torn in 1/2 and my other property investments having just lost about 20% then the overriding factor becomes having sufficient money to survive till death.
I have enough if I die inside 10 years.. :):D

The big benefit about living in Indonesia is the cost savings you can enjoy. If you can control your discretionary spending, minimize the premium that "BULE" are often charged for everything (give them the secret sign for the local discount), then Indonesia is a bargin for general living expenses.

Compare on a spread sheet the living expenses of your current home verse your apartment in Bali. I bet you will be surprised at how much cheaper Bali is. But don't forget to add unique ezpenses to living in Indonesia like periodic airfare home anty anything else you can think of.

Sorry about your investment losses. Too many people listened to the so called "experts" about property investments and stock advice.

'give them the secret sign for the local discount'

ok, what's the secret sign ;)..
I'm lucky my wife happens to be the best negotiator in Indonesia..she ALWAYS gets a discount on ANYTHING!
I have to laugh when the sellers look at me and are forced to nego with istriku..but to be honest and I don't mind paying a little bit more than the local harga I just hate it when the assumption is that I will pay anything they ask 'cos I'm a rich bule..ha!..

Sooblie, what's stopping you from coming over NOW!!
Like you and everyone else we have been hard hit by dropping interest rates etc..so, whilst living here now I'm minimisng the living costs we would have incurred back in Oz... 'Just do it!'

One of the thing I find really enjoyable, and I am proud of, in my region (ie Manado) is that you will almost never get this double-prizing standard toward foreigners. As long as you deal with a manadonese, he won't cheat you. Of course they will look at you as the rich guy, but they are incredibly honest... But I have to admit that this is VERY specific of my region. When I go to Jawa, Bali or Sumatra, I quickly find out that I am far away from home...:(
