Dear all,
my wife was offered to move to jakarta. at this stage she doesnt have a firm offer in hands and we are wondering what an average salary for an european architect in Jakara would be.
the company will cover all living expenses like housing, schools for the kids, a car etc... bu we are wondering what an average salary would be.
further I would like to know the chances for my self? I am currently working as a Manager in the shipping industry and would move over to jakarta without job offer as my company is not present in indonesia neither have any contacts in that area.
any help in question of figuers and in question to my work situation would help us a lot.
thanks a lot for your time and hope that somebody can help us. any ball figures would help already. (not cost of living as I have found these in the forum, just total salary amounts that are realistic to ask for).

In the USA civil engineering and architecture are separate, distinct professions. Perhaps it’s different in Europe.

Waarm: I think the difference is that civil architecture is more to do with the structural engineering aspect whereas architecture (Interior design) as asked by Roy is simply that.

Interior design is a third profession, not engineers, not architects. Civil engineers are dirt movers; structural engineers, well, do structures. Architects fancy themselves as artists who work with building materials. A well designed building will have, among others, all three professions working together in harmony.

I know, I was just thinking that perhaps in Indonesia the division of labor is different.

For me, civil engineers build the targets for mechanical engineer's weapons to destroy. :-D

Yes, and apologies to the OP for rambling a bit.

If they're paying for housing, schools for the kids, a car etc, that can already be $4000 or more per month, so to get a salary of $3-4000 on top of that would be pretty good in my opinion (based on no knowledge of architecture but some of other professions).

I also don't know much about the shipping industry, but I would have thought there'd me more chance in a place like Batam or Singapore than Jakarta.

hi JJ9749,
thanks for your help. do you actually live in jakarta? If so what are your all over impressions of the city?
in reference to my situation I defiantly agree that singapore is the place to be for shipping but right now there is no choice.
thanks again for the help

I'd say between 5k and 12k but aim around 8k-10k (depends on experience and function within the company). They should definitely compensate for moving to a place like Jakarta...(you can't work easily, lower comfort, pollution,...)
You asked about an impression of Jakarta, any clue about where her possible future employer is located? It's best to live close to work (as traffic is horrible in most parts) and your experience will be different depending on the area that you'll live in...

Oh yes. And the smart ones make an even bigger killing by living in Indonesia where the cost of living is low. Imagine.

I just quit a $12.500 a month job because the company didnt deliver on their promises of the accommodation.
Yes i am serious, engineers compared to school teachers for example are in a different league all together, especially when youre in oil gas and mining.
Not being flash its a fact.

Yes I agree with you if its in Oil & Gas Industry as I've mentioned before that I've met people in that industry with that kind of salary range

But outside that industry civil engineers working in companies such as the general contractors for buildings & roads, etc. I dont see that they are paid that much

I thought the question was about being an architect not oil and gas. In which case I believe my original answer of a total package around $8000 is about right. Of course if you are a partner in an architecture practice you can be earning that much a week, but then that would be in the practice's home country.
