There's an open, free event at the Marriot. I may check it out, but I am not into mega-events with group hugs, etc. A good venue in Mega Kuningan could be CazBar. I think they have a TV...

At the last moment, I decided to go to the Marriot event. Some familiar faces, most were not. A fair number of American men with their haughty Indonesian ladies. Surprise, surprise...The place reeked of gorengan and the A/C was not as cool as it should have been. I was actually surprised to see former KPU Commissioner Ibu Chusnul whom I understood to be anti-US. Nevertheless it was ok event. The band played some blues. All of which reminded me that I need to beam up to the mothership soon. I've been away from the U.S. for eight years now. In fact, I left eight years ago, a few days after Mr. Bush was inaugurated.

Only 8? I have not been back in 18/19 years, the Mothership is running on fumes of her former self.

I met up with Tim at BATS...He partied and I was stuck on the phone in the rear...talking with my buddies back home!!! Wasn't that something? I have never seen so many people in DC!!! Jeez, mind you the population is what 90% black...with the exception of Georgetown??? I thought half the population of blacks (US) showed up! I would have loved to be there.:):)

I am proud of the changes that have been made possible at this moment in history. I truely hope that President Obama rises to the momentous challenges that confront the nation and can put America back on a path as a true world leader in all things.

A comment was made by a reporter that VP Cheney looked like Dr. Strangelove since he was in a wheelchair for the Inauguration. What a fitting comment...

Ironically the president invoked Thomas Paine in his inauguration speech. A secularist, if not an atheist, Paine is probably rolling in his grave due to the overt presence of religion in the inauguration.

"Each of these churches show certain books, which they call revelation, or the Word of God. The Jews say that their Word of God was given by God to Moses; face to face; the Christians say that their Word of God came by divine inspiration; and the Turks say that their Word of God (the Koran) was brought by an angel from heaven. Each of those churches accusses the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all"

"My mind is my own church"

"The World is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."
- Thomas Paine

Paine was a fierce opponent of slavery, and was ready to abolish slavery in 1779. For his radical views, he was ostracised and died a pauper. It is time to remember and celebrate this mostly-forgotten and most visionary of Founding Fathers. It is gratifying to see the president draw upon some of our finest traditions.

I too, am anxiously awaiting how he will somehow manage to bring it all together. I was researching his view on the Lincoln Administration and trying to ascertain how it will parallel his course of action. Further, how he intends to use other noteworthy people in American History as inspirations. I heard mention of Obama drawing upon Franz Boaz as one of the individuals whose teachings will guide him in restructuring our broken country.

I was actually pretty excited about this. Franz Boas was the founder of US Anthropology, and is quite the scholar in his own right. Many accolades have been bestowed upon him, posthumous even. I took an entire semester of studying US Anthropology to help further my understanding of US History. Boaz was a proponent of abolishing racism of not only Native Americans, Blacks but other immigrants as well. His unwavering support and intellectual prowess saw him rise to one of the most prominent positions in the educational field while presiding at Columbia University.

In addition to his relentless work on racism and discrimination, he also established the "Four Field Approach", which included at its core, socioculturalism, biological, linguistics and archaeology as intrugal parts of what is defines cultures rather than societies. While studying these factors he was able to ascertain that human discourse is key to the problems ailing humanity. And that this was due to "Nurture" instead of "Nature". This principal states that we learn our disposition at a young age from our immediate surroundings rather that being predisposed to these notions and conditions from birth.

With this said, I want to see how Obama can "mend the fences" so to speak. The country as a whole is under great duress. The previous administration turned the reigns of the country over while it was suffering; a failing economy and horrible public image. In trying to determine just what an uphill battle the administration faces, I found that the previous administration came into power with major surpluses in US reservoirs from the Clinton administration and a moderate world view. Since the Bush administration, those reserves have been depleted and the image permanently tarnished. The abundance of debt amassed over the past 8yrs, will keep the country reeling until such time as the bleeding can be stopped. When? I don't think one term is enough to even make a dent in it. I wonder how can the skeptics be so critical of a man who has yet to prove himself?

He didn't buy this election, there is no lawsuits being filed claiming unethical practices. Yet he's persecuted and villianized, with such harsh criticism. I honestly believe he is off to a good start. Judging by the outcome of the inauguration, seems the US is in agreement with that. It would be a tremendous boost if he could somehow harness the energy that the country is feeling today and keep the ball rolling. Oddly enough, I am aware that there will be no quick fixes to our current dilema. Again, it will take more than one term (wishful thinking will allow him to see 3 terms). All his efforts will be under close scrutiny and while his successes will be downplayed any failures will be highlighted.

I guess we will all have to take the "wait and see" approach. I am certainly convinced we will now be headed in the right direction.

A look at yesteryear thru the eyes and lense of Life Magazine's Internationally Reknown Photographer/Director and Author....Mr. Gordon Parks:)

***Just felt this was an appropriate picture to share***

Some of you may remember the photo a bit differently, the original was taken by, I believe Grant Wood...(Mauricio, correct me if I'm wrong)

Some here may appreciate this, but give the picture time to load once you zoom in, this is very much worth the wait.........

1,474 Megapixel Inauguration Panorama is a Treasure Trove of Candid Captures (http://i.gizmodo.com/5137670/1474-megapixel-inauguration-panorama-is-a-treasure-trove-of-candid-captures)

We've all seen the iconic imagery of the day again and again: the nervous smile as the oath went haywire, the rapt crowds, Aretha's hat (http://i.gizmodo.com/5135394/why-we-have-cameras). But what about everything else? It's all in here. Containing over 2GB of photo data and comprised of over 220 images shot from a Canon G10 Bridge camera on a Gigapan robotic camera mount, David Bergman's incredibly detailed panorama (http://www.davidbergman.net/blog/2009/01/22/how-i-made-a-1474-megapixel-photo-during-president-obamas-inaugural-address/) is filled with pieces of information that you previously weren't able or bothered to see. Some are just obviously cool—nearly being able to read the sheet music on performers stands, seeing the comically varied expressions in the VIP area behind the President as he speaks—but others are more subtly awesome.
Take Yo-Yo Ma snapping a picture on his iPhone, the unreal number (http://i.gizmodo.com/5136176/the-youth-ball-welcomes-obama-with-a-sea-of-digital-cameras) of personal digital cameras or the endless, imposing banks of photography equipment surrounding the event from every conceivable angle. Sorry CNN, this is cooler than Photosynth (http://i.gizmodo.com/5135625/cnns-inauguration-day-photosynth-compiles-crowdsourced-photos-in-3d-but-its-no-hologram). Tell us what you find in the comments.
