Hi,
I amay be moving there in the next two months.
Can you tell me what the cost of living is like there? Say like rent for a decent place? and a night out on the town?
Thanks!
Hi I just moved here in Semarang, I'm also looking to make friends in this City. The costs of living here is aroung USD$50 per week per person. That doesn't include petrol & rent.

Hi! is that for just food? or entertainment, travel etc.,
Do you happen to know the rent in the area?
What are you doing there?
Thanks!
I've lived in Semarang for the past 4 years. The cost of living, which has gone up in that time, is still fairly decent. I support a family that includes two kids, a wife, a mother-in-law, a maid and, sometimes, the brother-in-law and his wife all on Rp 7mil/mo.
But, I don't have much money left over, if any!
Sooo...Coketa49, semarang, viktor, Bali-que, Lostone7, hjunus and anyone else...My family and I are here.
Please note that we're "boring" - we don't drink, smoke or use other drugs (unless you count dark chocolate as a drug!), gamble, go to nightclubs or anything like that. :)

Im from Semarang, im not there right now.. but i can give you some recomended place in Semarang :
1. Lawang Sewu, old Dutch building.. it location in center of Semarang.. close to my old high school in Jalan Pemuda :)
2. Gombel.. the best spot to enjoy Semarang view.
3. Kampung Daun, you can find many famous local food there, and the price is very cheap. It location in Marina.
4. If you like bit extreme sport, you can go to "Umbul Sido Mukti" in Bandungan... nice place to ease the pain after broken heart..
5. Or if you wanna try some cheap food you can go to Tembalang.. there are plenty of Cheap and nice food..
I've been to the city a few times but don't know it well.
What I do know is, for ex pats, it's handy as you can get your KITAS and SKLD card from there.
Hence my reasons for trips up there.
I may be there on the 6th of this month but I'm not sure yet.

If anyone wants to meet me, you'll find me weekdays at the Studyworld/ProVisi/StiBisnis campus, Jl. Kyai Saleh, (ex-balai prajurit) not far from Simpang Lima. I'm there from around 12-9. You might want to contact me first to avoid conflicts with my work schedule, though.

Hi Glenn,
Just happened to read that you work at the Studyworld etc. campus. Is your director mr Stefanus Liem Hoo Shen? He is a former student of mine. So I would like to meet. Living in Salatiga, by the way. Can we make an appointment?
Theo
Hi Theo,
As far as I know, Mr. Stefanus still works here, but he hasn't been the director for a while now. Long story. Why don't you contact me via PM and we can figure out when's good.

There are a fair number of Philippinas and Philippinos here. If you want, contact schools like Karang Turi, Semarang School, Bina Bangsa, Maria Regina, and a few others - they each employ a few from your country. There's also a church here that seems to cater to you folks, but I don't know the name.

Yes i agree, sometimes Semarang is boring..
Semarang newcomers friends said that Semarang is perfect place for retired.
thats why i migrated from Semarang to "pelosok" Karawang for jobs..
but after some times, i found that i love Semarang more than before..
everytime i come back there, i always trying to explore new places where i never been there before
around Semarang.. Im not "mall" girls, so i always explore "natural things"
So maybe whose feel boring, this place may help
Enjoy the view

Glenn
Hmmm...Theo, it seems you can't do PMing yet. I'm at Studyworld daily from 12-9, M-F. Feel free to contact the school 841-8608 to see when I'm free (my schedule often changes).

Hello everyone :)
I am planning on coming over to Semarang for 6 months starting from March. I am wondering if flat share is popular in Semarang, as my budget is quite limited (around 250 euro/month) I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford to rent anything on my own??
I’d appreciate any piece of advise ☺

Hi Eva,
I've been living in Semarang for a couple of months and I am interested in sharing a flat, although there aren't many apartments, mainly houses! My company currently pays the accommodation for me, so I'm staying at the hotel....
Let me know if we can meet up soon!
Cheers, Eleonore
Hi Guys, anyone knows any formality agent in Semarang who can do KITAS arrangement at Semarang Immigration? thanks.

Hi Riyad, sorry I didn't see your post back in February. I was extremely busy then and sometimes the forum doesn't show me new messages. I'd be happy to be your friend but I'll be moving from Semarang in two months...
Glenn
Hi Guys, anyone knows any formality agent in Semarang who can do KITAS arrangement at Semarang Immigration? thanks.
Here are two I know of, although I can't vouch for them personally as I don't know them well.
Slamet Riyanto 08122817621 or 08122560655
Edi Slamet 081335971775
Neither of them know of ALL of the required documents for foreigners, especially the SKTT, but they can at least deal with the Visa, ITAS and police report.
NEVER trust an agent to know all the laws, even though they're often ex-immigration officials.
Glenn

where are you moving to?
Purwokerto. I just signed a contract to start work there in June. The remuneration isn't great, but the job is in line with the direction I want to take in my life, and I'll be able to reach one of my life goals of helping Indonesia, so it's worth it. Also, my partners seem like good people.
Glenn
thick accent! I went there couple of times. Nothing much to do in Purwokerto. So you will work as an english teacher over there?
Partially, yes, but also partner and general manager.
semarang its a nice place ,

Right....Semarang is nice place. Been living here since 1996 :)
From the perspective of the quality of life, pollution, traffic, availability of foreign items, livability, etc., it's mostly good although non-standard food items are difficult to find or too expensive. Traffic is mostly good. The worst thing about living here is the salaries - business people here, on average, are stingy.

Well, I live in Puri Intan, a tiny housing complex not too far from Baturraden, in Pabuaran, and my office is on Jl. Kebocoran (heheheh) in Karang Salam. Actually, I'm hoping to be able get enough money to buy up some of the land in order to preserve the forest here, or even grow forests where none exist now....

Welcome to Semarang (soon), I dont know for sure but maybe you can try to go to Holly Stadium in the north area of Semarang (Tanah Mas). Next to Holly Stadium there is a Sport center (lets say this kekekeke) called Yadora they have basketball activities. Or another option is join with basketball team from the university (Undip or Udinus. both are famous universities in Semarang)

Getting addicted with "Warung Lesehan" lately.......found one nice place around Puspanjolo area (close to Sam Poo Kong temple) if we can find a time we can meet up there and have chit chat session.
other option can be teena's idea at Pissa cafe (but not peacock cos its just to crowded hehe) or Blue lotus if you want to bring any kids we can go Taman KB. any way Im having plenty of free time lately so meet up any time will be fine for me

Hi all,
I'm not really an expat, but I've been living in the US for awhile and now moving back to Semarang. Lots of things have changed since the last time I came back home!! Btw, I'm wondering if anybody has some information about clay pigeon shooting club/range in semarang? I know they have a range at akpol but It's only for air soft gun.. I tried to ask some people around here but they don't seem to have any slightest idea about what clay pigeon shooting is, hahaha.. (or maybe i should just find a new hobby :S)
Regardless, I hope everybody is enjoying their stay in semarang. :)

Be in Semarang this week, anybody with good knowledge of the place, where to rent house, nice areas to live, and has a car and. Would like to show me and gf around ? Happy to pay a few bob for the service. Please contact me.Aveagoodday.
I was wondering if anyone can give me info about Semarang. I haven't lived there for almost 2 years now, so my info is out of date. I'm trying to help develop the Wikivoyage.org article about it.
I need info on tourist destinations in and nearby (Old Smg, Sam Poo Kong, the museums, Lawang Sewu, and other historically/culturally/religiously interesting places; Bandungan, Ambarawa's Train museum, etc.); shopping (Simpang Lima, etc.); restaurants and eateries (Pak Edi's Tahu Gimbal, Es Putar Conglik, Martabak Manis Jagalan, On-On Pub, Mutiiara, Holiday,IBC, etc.); nightlife; hotels (Ciputra, Grand Candi, Gumaya, etc.); and anything else a traveller might want to see, like Danar Hadi Batik or the bencong district (haha). And, of course, prices and opinions!
If you want to contribute directly, just go to Semarang (http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Semarang Semarang). We'll be happy to have more editors help us tell about Indonesia (http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Indonesia), since there aren't many from Indonesia with recent experience here! Remember that this is a travel guide, not an encyclopedia, so casual writing is fine as long as you write about what travelers need to know!
If you don't feel comfortable editing yourself - maybe your English isn't great - no problem! Post it to the talk page of the place (but not all places, like Pariaman, have an article yet), or you can send the info to me and I'll post it for you. Saya bisa bhs Indonesia!
Namaste, peace & love,
Glenn
Hi Glenn,
I see you have left Semarang, we met once at your school.
Feel free to use any material from my Semarang page on the Virtual Tourist website:
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c8969/126cea/4/
As that is where I post my travel experience, I don't think I will write on Wikivoyage anytime soon.
Yours,
Theo
Thanks! Which school did we meet at?
Namaste, peace & love,

They don't seem to demand copyrights but they sure get plenty, in contrast to WV which releases anything not copyrighted into the public domain via GNU/CC/SA etc. If I quote materials from your articles, would that be considered a violation and get you or me or WV in trouble? Otherwise, I can just look for information and completely rewrite it. What do you think?
Namaste, peace & love,

One lives and learns. I joined VT in 2006 and don't remember reading that User Agreement. At the time I saw VT as a non-commercial activity. I did notice that in 2008 VT was bought by the Trip Advisor group, and likely they introduced or amended the User Agreement.
I think we better err on the safe side, meaning that you write your own stuff on the basis of my information. And if you should like to use any picture, let me know. I may have others of the same object or view.

Thanks! Which school did we meet at?

I do not remember the name of the school, but the address was Jalan Kyai Saleh 14 in Semarang. I mentioned the name of my former student, Stefanus Liem Hoo Shen, who served as director or manager of the school for some time.

Okay, will do. I have some photos of some of the places but certainly not as many places as you have been to. I'll let you know. Thanks!

Ah, StudyWorld and STMIK ProVisi...Stefanus, yes, I met him a couple of times but I never had the chance to get to know him. I'd better not say what I was told by Hoo Liem about him as it's not nice to pass on unverified gossip about someone I don't know.
StudyWorld went under after I left them, good riddance. ProVisi was sold by Hoo Liem to a Christian coalition and was slated to move to another location, but don't know what happened. I could say a few choice things about Hoo Liem and his wife but I'll just say get it all in writing and never take their word. "The Devil Wears Prada."

Hi Glenn,
I was right surmising that the User Agreement has been added to the Virtual Tourist website when it was bought by the Tripadvisor group. Proof: except for a few non-essential paragraphs the agreement is litterally the same as the one of the Tripadvisor site.
However, as a user I have given them the 'non-exclusive right' to use my material, which I understand to mean that I can give others that right as well. From the site http://www.writing-world.com/rights/rights.shtml :
<< Exclusive vs. Nonexclusive Rights
What does it mean when a publication wants "exclusive" or "nonexclusive" rights to something? When a publication asks for exclusive rights, they are asking that the piece not appear anywhere else while they are exercising their right to it. There is often a limit on the length of time a publisher will request exclusive rights -- one month, three months, one year -- and then that piece may appear elsewhere.
Nonexclusive is just the opposite; Publisher A may feature your piece on their website for a year, but because their right to do so is nonexclusive, you can sell the piece to Publisher B and have it appear elsewhere at the same time. Just make sure Publisher B doesn't want exclusivity!
The "nonexclusive right to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit and sell digital reproductions" means you are allowing your material to be sold elsewhere, by someone else. This does not mean that you will see any profits from these arrangements. It does mean that you can sell your own work to other places at the same time -- but be aware that the original purchaser may make your material available to fee-based databases or other content sources without ever reimbursing you another penny. >>
So that may make your job paraphrasing my stuff easier,
Theo
You're a real peach, Theo! Thanks!
Namaste, peace & love,
Glenn
