The dreaded moment is here. I've to tender my resignation. Problem is the owners of the present company (a tutorial centre) I'm working in have been really nice to me. They've caught wind of my intention to leave and have called me up for a meeting tomorrow. I know they're going to present me with a counter offer. But my mind's made up and I've already signed a contract with my new school. In fact, I'm supposed to collect my visa from the Indonesian embassy tomorrow.

How would you guys tell your present employer (especially if they've been great) of your intention to leave without burning any bridges? Main reason I'm leaving is because of pay issues as well as professional development. I'm interested to get myself IB-certified and I'll have a shot at this in my new school.

Merci coucou.cherie :) I suppose you're right. Let's keep things simple and tell the truth.

Yep, I'd agree with that. Simple but factual.

*do not necessarily close your mind to their counter offer, it might be better than you think.

I think most schools will understand your desire to continue to develop professionally. They will understand that theirs is more of a stepping-stone than a destination.

Without knowing all the facts, if your new school will give you IB experience, there's probably not a huge need for you to keep any ties with your current school (aside from being polite, that is)l once you're in the IB system, you're marketable all over the place.

Thanks kw and tony.

Met the two young bosses/owners. As expected, they presented with me with the counter offer. It's more than what I'll be getting at my new school. I must admit they've really made an effort to get me to stay. The new offer would be close to a 30% increase of the pay I got when I first joined them. And I've been with them for less than a year - 7 months to be exact.

Anyway I didn't want to burn any bridges and offered to drop by their new branch in Jakarta once in a while and update them on how their franchisee is doing. I heard the franchisee is interested in opening more branches in Jakarta.

Holy cow. After handing in my resignation, the father (original founder of the company) of the two young bosses called me in for a chat. He actually offered to increase what his sons offered me. So now the new offer would be a 70% increase of my pay when I first joined them :eek2: Tempting indeed. 11 jt more than what my new school is offering :decision:

But I've already signed a contract with my new school and as tempting as it is, I'm going to stand by my decision.

They must really love you!! Good luck in the new place :)

Q: IB is International Baccalaureate? And what kind of qualification do you need?

Thanks Flicka :)

Yup you're right IB is International Baccalaureate. There are three programmes: (1) Primary Years Programme (2) Middle Years Programme and the (3) Diplomma Programme. For you to be certified, you have to attend a number of courses/workshops. Another thing, you need to firstly be certified in the subject(s) you'll be teaching.
