Hi Cecile, depending on your budget really. We recently stayed at Tanjung Lesung Bay Villa Resort (about an hour from Anyer and Carita). Its nice place with good bungalows to accommodate from 2 or 4 or 6 people, and all mod cons (only no internet). Restaurant serves reasonable food, service excellent. Its less than a million IDR per night. The beach activities are superb, good snorkelling, boat trips, diving in wrecks, jet ski..etc etc and you can also go with daily trip to Anak Krakatau, @ 5 Million Rp per person (minimum of 6 persons) for the trip, with pack lunch inclusive. The anak krakatau is about 35kms away and about an hour to get there by boat, subject to rumblings and alerts.

We've also looked at accommodation in Anyer and Carita, and beaches (not very nice sandy beaches)..its abit 'worn' actually, although the choice of restaurants (local) are excellent for seafood. There is a Melia Hotel in Carita, its Spanish style and we believe is belongs to the spanish chain (Sol) hotels.

Tanjung Lesung Bay Villa Resort or Kalicaa Villa Resort (next to each other) beats Carita or Anyer in my opinion.

You could look to rent a place from a private person in sambolo, their bugalows are 2 and 3 bedroom...........

Izamarina, are you certain you quoted the right price for a 6 person day trip around Anak Krakatau? We have never taken the trip, so no first hand experience, but approximately $500/ person seems a bit off the scale. If the price is correct we will not be taking that boat ride any time soon.

Yep, its 5 million Rp per person x 6 persons (minimum number people in the group per trip!) thats 30 million RP total.

Not kidding, we too were shocked at the cost!! We didnt think its worth it..we only paid just over 3 million for a 3 days 2 night at the resort itself. Oww the funny part is that 5 million per person, you get a packed lunch, sandwiches!! and water only with some fruits, the boat trip and a hike (with an experience guide) of 3 hours up and down the anak krakatau for a close view! But we were also told my resort staff, we can find our own boatman and boat from the village (much less cost, negotiable of course as it is in Indonesia), but its not guaranteed on safety issues.

We decided not to go in the end, but rather spend the money on other sea sport activities which is much much less but most enjoyable. I dont think its worth the money to spend that much, many other volcanoes to see in Java, and also Northern Sumatra..costing less, but anak krakatau is anak krakatau..10 million RP for 2 of us..naaaa...I'll take a rain check.

Just to compare, where I live, with 30 millions you can easily buy (built on order) a 15m wooden boat, covered, freshly paint with your design and accomodated (benchs+racks for tanks and equipment...etc) to cater to 6 divers + crew. Another 30 millions would (almost) pay you 2 Yamaha 40 PK engine to go boat tripping.
Still where I live, you would rent a boat (same as described above, without the diving features) for a day trip for less than a million (this 15m boats could board up to 20 persons without problems), depending on your bargaining skill and abilities to speak the linguo, including boatman, one crew and gas for a day trip (about 4 hours of transport and the rest of the time spent at various islands for snorkelling)! For that price, you won't get the pack sandwich though:(...

The guy in Krakatau is renting the boat just one day per year and live with the money for the rest of the year, or this is the case of a owner who thinks that foreigners are stupid!?
Must be a very very luxurious boat... but then I don't get the sandwich lunch!? The "exotic touch" I guess?

My conclusion: Forget about Krakatau and come to Manado, North Sulawesi. We do have a volcanoe (Manado tua) that some friends of mine could boat you to, which offer astonishing snorkelling at its base, fantastic views at its top and nice hike in between.
With the money saved, you can pay the return ticket, the accomodation in Manado and you will still have some money left.

Hi Atlantis, your suggestion made me really want to visit Manado! Do you stay in Manado? A friend of mine has just been there last month. They said Manado have lots of beautiful place, especially Bunaken?? More beautiful than Bali/Tanjung Benoa?? Love to dive...I'm jealous when seeing photos and video...hiks...

Manado and North Sulawesi are indeed beautiful if you know how to look at it. What I like here is the atmosphere, the people, the language, the sounds, the culture, the nature, the food, the climate, the mountains, the sea... I for sure forgot half a dozen of other things.
Then... diving... I dove in many places in the world, but very few places rewarded me with so many colors, so many fishes, so many critters, so many surprised than north sulawesi (under)water did. If you make it to Manado, you mut dive (or at the very least snorkel).

We stay at a private villa, called Villa Holmestead. It's a great deal, and a beautiful place right on the beach. The restaurant at the sailing club is 200m down the beach.
We've stayed at the resort and at the sailing club, but now that we've tried this private villa with our own pool, we won't stay anywere else.

Yes, I agree with Atlantis, I have seen those very nice wood boats made by Bugis near Makassar. I was tempted to buy one but I guess they are not so easy to sail and it is the problem !

Regarding Krakatau charges, obviously it is totally overpriced and like in many other places/occasions in Indonesia, foreigners are considered almost as rich as they are stupid so they do not really mind to be overcharged. I am not sure it is the most clever way to develop the tourism industry but Welcome to "Indonesian tourism year 2008" !

Krakatau tour is quite nice but go there only if the weather is good, sea is calm and boat in good condition (but there are far to be luxuous). I have been to Tanjung Lesung, it is a quite nice resort (except food and make sure there are no outing that day) but very far if you just plan to go to Krakatau. It is better just to stay at SolMelia (not charming but convenient) or Sambolo and go to Krakatau from there.
Good luck

a tip for a trip to krakatau... whatever you do... dont pay the 5million, if you try to book with the local fishermen be very careful.

If you decide on a price with them and it seems too cheap... be extra careful I have heard they'll take you over to the volcano and force you to pay more than you agreed on before they take you back to Java. ..

just a word of warning...
