CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulbs contain mercury.
In the US, you can bring your old CFLs to Home Depot or WallMart and they recycle them.
Mercury is a persistent, bioaccumulative toxin. The primary human exposure is from ingestion of fish contaminated with methyl mercury.
Mercury sulfide: Hg + S → HgS
Methyl mercury: HgCH3+
