View Full Version : job and living in indo
hello from Croatia :) i am 22 years old and student at the moment, after i graduate i wish to move to Jakarta or Bali ( bcz my girl lives in Indonesia ).
now i have 2 situation:
1) first i wanna come during my spring break, stay there about a month ( maybe more or less, depends how much money i will have) - and the question is- how much money i need for 1 month ? ( that month will be also my first time in indo, so i wanna see the city, maybe I will spend a few weeks in Bali and try new food, ... ... tourist stuffs ). I calculated that i need about 2 000 euros excluding plane tickets?
and which is the best for accommodation ? hotel ? renting an apartment for a month ? or renting some room (kost) with bathroom ( my gf told me i could get a clean room with AC for 130 euros a month and that is comfortable enough), for daily meals, i plan to eat out.
???
2) The second situation, If I come for a longer period of time,
, after i graduate, how hard is it to find a job ? ( i am majoring in Safety engineering, but i am also constructional technician in high school ) can i use that skill in indonesia ? but i can not speak Indonesian :/ but i am really interested in working there. what is the approximate salary in indo ? how much do i need for daily living cost?
now i am working on some internet project, and after 6 months i will get my see my first earning, and i think i can earn about 500 euros a month ( practically i could get 2 000 euros a month, but i need for really fast internet connection there, is that a problem in Indo ? ) but i can not count on that, i still thinkthat is kinda risky, but i need 8 months to become master, if i can earn min 500 euros a month, + some savings, is that enough for living until i find a real job ? the advantage of this, is that i could use to live in Indo for a while during my time searching for a job, without that i need to find job first in my own country to have huge savings for my coming.
what do you people reckon ? :) thanks in advance

Unless ur gf is a very good spender.. :p, 1000 euro should give the two of u a wonderful month here in Indonesia. With around 180 euro You could rent a room with AC+cable+large bed+fridge+wash/laundry a month. What sort of internet project do u usually deal with? 500 euros a month could keep you well fed here, (almost) everything is cheap
You need to work on your English as well.
It's off. He says he needs fast internet and there is zero chance of that one in this country.

That could be regional though Fred, on Batam we have the extremes ....... lightning fast sometimes ... then whole system dead for days at a time......... I think the key words are "consistency" and "reliability" in which case forget it ........... I guess that goes for just about everything else doesn't it ?
But on the upside there are always opportunities in the HSE field, the negative side being most of the major employers are looking for previous experience, still, maybe the right company will be willing to draft in new blood to join an already "in place" team to add new and fresh knowledge.
Good Luck and start to use correct English and grammar in correspondence, you never know if a potential employer is reading.

HSE won't be easy without experience and having something to offer that can't be found locally.Generally, HSE expats are in managerial roles with MNC companies working for the Exxon, Chevron type clients.
thanks all for the help :)
but could u guys please help me tellling how people usually apply for a job in indo for an expat like me?
Construction industy possible, but depends on specialisation.
H&S say "what" this is Indonesia, the death of an employee is dealt with 1500 euro and an abituary...... NAH, lots of money if you get teh right contacts but forget the H&S part, and think B**LS**t
Your chances of getting a job with your present skill set are almost nil inmost of Indonesia and zero in Bali. Sorry to give you the bad news but it is a fact.
Yes, Indonesia could give a comfort place with that amount, i suggest u take apartment furnished. Cheap, clean and simple.
Well, i hav a bf too in overseas and he would like to do the same with u ...
But i suggest him to find a job in expat website for placed in Indonesia. Coz usually, what u get in ur place is not same as u get here in Indonesia, Unless u hav an excellent skill and proper. Or u better find from foreign company too in Indonesia. Dunno, but , thats what i know from my other expat friends LOL ...
I still look for another option from this forum too LOL ...
Well Good luck ;)

well.. i have two foreigner friends from Uzbekistan.. now, they live and work in Bali.. it's been two years i guess.. but, yeah.. you need to learn Indonesian language first.
Well, what's being said about Internet is partly true : yes, if you use a 3G connection with a USB modem, you'll get serious headaches when the connection turns crap.
But you can still subscribe to Speedy, which is ADSL and reliable enough for me as for now.
I'm using the 1 Mbps package for my Internet related work and so far I cannot complain!
As for the monthly budget, I'd say 500 euros would be a strict minimum according to western standards, you will probably not find a very good studio with this in Jakarta, but if you don't go out so often, it can be enough.
Let's say 1000 euros per month if you want a good studio or 2 bedrooms apartment, going out one of 2 times a week with your girlfriend, food, etc.
(well, it really depends on what you like to do)
I have Speedy, in Tasikmalaya, and I use the internet for **ahem** until I get an idea of the laws, I will not say. Speedy is wonderful, when it works. I have the 2Mbps package, that costs me around Rp. 900,000. If speed is all you need, then speedy is best. When working, I see a consistent 2 Mbps speed download and 512 Kbps upload, the USB modems cannot compete with that. They will say that is is up to 3.1 Mbps, but you are lucky to see 200 Kbps 99% of the time.
Now, all of that being said. There was one key phrase... "When working" Speedy is terrible for random and untimely disconnects. Sometimes you will have no problems for an entire week (last week for me was great), then you have a week like this one, where it disconnects every couple of minutes. Speedy's customer service also really REALLY R-E-A-L-L-Y S-U-C-K-S!!! Can I say it any louder lol? They just want to get you off of the phone or out of their office and will tell you anything to do so. For example, they were supposed to be here Thursday morning to look at our lines. It is noe Friday and nothing. The only way to get a response is to email their corporate office.
As for the USB-style internet (AHA, Telkomsel, Indosat ect.) They are very very cheap for, what they say is, 3.1 Mbps, roughly Rp200,000 - Rp500,000. The problem with them is, as I said before, you will NEVER see 3.1 Mbps, Never-ever-ever-ever-EVER. You will normally see 200 - 400 Kbps downstream and 50 - 100 Kbps upstream, which is ok for regular surfers, but I watch football games online and it is impossible lol.
So that should break down the internet for you. As for money... Forget about a job for a loooooooooooooong time. first you have to be legal, which takes time, then learn Bahasa Indonesia and Sundanese, Javanese or whatever the local language is in the area. Finally after all of that, you must fight the economy and I hope you are good looking and tall, because that is the #1 job requirement for most positions here, lol, kinda kidding, kinda not kidding.
500 Euros, seems to convert to about 6,300,000 Rupiah. Depending on where you plan to live, that can get you by in a month, but it would be a tight budget. 2000 Euros is nearly 25,000,000 Rupiah, that will allow you to live pretty easily for the month-long visit. I make about that, maybe a little more, per month and my wife and I live quite well. We even have about half of that going towards bills in the US.

hmmm ... I dont think it's quite easy to find a job for an expat .. i think you need a network to help you find one. Because the company usually avoid the extra cost for the documentation and license fee for hiring an expat, the process, taking care IMTA, work visa, etc etc .. kind of complicated. NGO usually have openings for expat. and some advertise it in the newspaper or in the internet.
good luck.
