View Full Version : Fuel Subsidy
Looks like the government is going for the fudge version of restricting subsidised Premium and Solar to private cars (definition?) produced before 2005 beginning October 1. Later cars will have to fill up with unsusidised fuel.
My crystal ball is a bit foggy this morning but this is what I saw in it:
1. A monumental stampede to fill up anything that doesn't leak before midnight on 30 September.
2. Many, many new business opportunities for the informal sector.
3. If the rakyat gets restless, another little spat with Malaysia.
4. My present habit of filling my scooter with Pertamax as there is no queue at that pump may have to be revised.

You should take your crystal ball in for service. It missed a new market, for a special fee of course, for pejabat to start issuing STNK with under-reported date of manufacture.
The simplest thing would be to pay a small fee to the pump attendant so your car magically looks older.

I the value of my 2004 Kijang Kapsul is looking good.
The dirty Pertamena Fuel problem gave quite a boost to struggling Petras and Shell stations. Shit canning the subsidy, even partially, will further level the playing field.
I just read an article about : http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/business/energy-subsidies-may-limit-growth/396743
And now my crystal ball is really clouding up - last night Hatta Radjasa, who usually knows what is going on, was on TV insisting that in Jabodetabek the limitation would begin on October 1. He said that Pertamina was already prepared. This morning, another senior minister (whose name I forget) was on saying that October 1 would see a 'soft launch' in that people driving newer cars would be 'encouraged' to buy non-subsidised in Jabodetabek but not actually compelled.
Sounds like a proper SBY hotch-potch. Based on previous form with minyak tanah/LPG fiasco I wouldn't be surprised to see 'shortages' of subsidised fuel rather forcing the issue.
Well... seems my mystic predictions were well off the mark. Fearing the discontent of the rakyat, our Representatives have increased the volume of subsidised road fuel for this year, taking advantage of a lower than expected oil price, in the hope that if they ignore the problem long enough it will go away at least for the duration of their term of office.

Already prepared or well prepared? Usually they don't take account the impact of a policy accurately, how to implement it with clear work instruction at the fuel pump station, how to avoid bribery to get the Premium, how to prevent "shortage" of the fuel after policy applied, etc..etc.

I asked the Pertamina attendant just yesterday. He confirmed that they are ready to implement the policy starting October 1. There's even a new pump with a blue dispenser for the benzin to be sold at Rp$6,600 per liter.
