View Full Version : How fast can you run a mile on the streets of Jakarta?

I can run a mile (1.6 kilometers) in 9:43 on reasonably quiet backstreets in Jakarta (I am female, 51 years old). I have no idea if that is terrible and I should be ashamed, or reasonably good (somehow I doubt it's great, since I have never been athletic).

It's surprisingly hard to find online information that gives helpful benchmarks for running speed at my age (I guess I'm supposed to be too old to try to stay fit!) - and even if I found something, it wouldn't take into account Jakarta's heat and humidity (I bet I'd run faster on a nice track in a cool, dry area!).

So, what are some times of other local runners (age and gender info appreciated)?

A lot better, actually ... if I run 5k it takes me about 40 to 45 minutes (I can't keep up the same pace that I do if I'm just running 1 mile).

9 km in a hour ( my pace goes down too ) too many cigarettes and alcohol, and too much overweight

When I was running marathons back in the US, my pace was about 11.5-12 minute mile, so I think you're doing way better than me.

No way could I run a marathon, or even a half marathon - you are way ahead of me!

I am not sure how far I could run nonstop, if I could pace myself and not worry about speed too much. But since hiking for 10 miles a day is pretty much my maximum (and that is walking, with rests as needed), I'm sure it isn't very far. Frankly, I'm always extremely happy when I finish running 1 mile outside...the treadmill is easier, but "real" running is a b***h.

Sounds like you are doing great puspawarna, I'm mid 30's (more or less). And run 10kms in 50-60 mins, which is slightly slow but I smoke, eat and drink too much. (And I'm lazy).

To be honest finding times online for a person of your age, or whateva, is not really that important, what it is doing the exercise, logging your times and improving your times. Mapmyrun.com or other websites like that can make it much easier to motivate and improve.

Well done and good luck.

If you want another benchmark, the australian army requires its 21 year old soldiers to be able to run 2.3 kms in 11 mins, I think they then add a minute or two per decade, a 48 year old gets about 15 mins, so you are well within that range.

Yippie a running thread! Sorry I'm late and bumping this...

Puspawarna, that is pretty damn good. I actually looked it up online (a while ago) a fit test for Chicago police recruitment is 1.5 mile for 13 minutes or something like that.
My fastest mile is under 8 minute mile (but I was panting like a sick dog when I was done..).

My fastest 5K is 33 minutes, 10K in 1 hour 15 mins..but these are all in the streets of Portland, nice cool 60 degree weather and clean air...low humidity. I've never tried running in 85 degree weather.

Not sure where you're from but in the US I've done three 5Ks, one 10K, and a tough 8K (in the hills of Portland for Zoo benefit)...but due to stupid training (and started with plantar fasciitis), it affected my knees, and my left hip (cartilage loss and hip instability).

Lately due to injury, I'm just happy I can do 1.5 miles with a 12 minute pace. Physical therapist said...gotta let go of the running and move to Eliptical machine.

I should try running at the beach (saw quite a few runners when I went to Jimbaran last year).

Depends on how fast the bus is going and if it hits you from behind or the front.

Recurring foot injury and hyperthyroidism forced me to quit running a few years ago. Now that thyroid hormones are better I am starting to get back in shape. I run 4 times a week for 30 mins (around 4 km). Hopefully in six months I can run for 1 hour 4 times a week with easy runs (about 40 mins) in between. I more conscious with time spent running than distance.

My dad told me I should run 5km in the morning and 5km in the evening, it worked, by the end of the week I was 50km away
